MANCHESTER SHIPCANAL . —Correspondence has taken place respecting tbe allegation that the Manchester Ship Canal Company and the Corporation of Manchester , which supports that company , had been subjected to unfair treatment by the London and North Western

Railway Company . The latter , through their Secretary ( Mr . T . Houghton ) , have written to Messrs Peter Spence and Co . to the effect that " there is no foundation whatever for saying that the London and North Western Railway Company have in any way

obstructed the progress of the Ship Canal works . On the contrary , they have met the views of the Canal Company , and have foregone their legal rights in order that the old railways might be abandoned and the canal works commenced on their site earlier than

the period fixed by the Act of Parliament . " A lengthy repoit has been forwarded of speeches made on the occasion of a deputation from the Manchester Ship Canal Company waiting on the railway directors , whose . chairman , Lord Stalbridge , stated that " they

had long ago given up any idea of opposing the construction of the canal , and had looked npon it as practically an accomplished fact , so that they had no wish or desire whatever to cause any delay which could possibly be avoided in the opening of tho canal for traffic . |
