NOTICES OF MEETINGS .

HUMBER LODGE , No . 57 . rpHE 63 rd anniversary of tho laying of tho foundation stono of this X Lod"e was held on Wednesday evening , the 7 th inst ., in tho Freemasons' Hall , Osborne-stroet , Hull , when a largo number of tho Past Masters and Brethren of this wealthy and influential Lodgo were present . The nsnal routine business having been transacted , Bro E . Corris P . P . G . R ., in an appropriate speech , presented Bro . S .

. Hotter I . P . M ., but in tho name of his wife , with a handsome tea and coffee service , bearing a suitable inscription , as an additional testimony of their appreciation of hia faithful and diligent services as Worship ful Master of the Lodge in 18 S 9 . He alluded to the distinguished Masonio career of Bro . Rutter . Initiated in 1882 , he had filled several offices , until he attained the great honour of being

installed in the chair of K . S . in 1889 . By his genial ruling and firm demeanour he had won the confidence and respect of the attenders of the Lodge . Bro . Rutter having briefly responded , the brethren sat down to a banquet , at whioh Bro . James Matthews Worshipful Master presided . The usnal Loyal and Masonio toasts having been hononred in happy terms , Brother M . 0 . Peck proposed

the toast of the evening , the Founders of tha Humber Lodge , and referred to the great and indomitable spirit that had filled the founders of that noble institution , which he had the authority of the Grand Secretary to say was the largest and wealthiest Lodge in England . He was glad to see that the Humber Lodge still

kept to the fore , and he was sure the prudence of the members of that Lodge would always enable them to assist brethren who sought their assistance . The toast was drunk in solemn silence . Othor Masonic toasts were duly honoured , and during the evening Bros . Green , Kenninghara , Isle , and Riby contributed songs , Bro . Stringer P . G . O . presiding at the pianoforte .

SHAKSPEARE LODGE , No . 284 .

fllHE brethren of this Lodge , of which Bro . Jas . Spilsbury is the JL W . M ., have shown their appreciation of the worth of their House Steward—Bro . Wm . Mann—by subscribing a purse and presenting it to him , with a written testimonial , on the occasion of his departure

from Warwick , to take up his residence in Brighton . Bro . Mann , by his uniform conrtesy and straightforward conduct , has won for him . self the respect and esteem of the whole of the members of his Lodge , and his departure has been deeply regretted by the brethren . The testimonial is worded as follows : —

"It was resolved that the thanks of the brethren be given to Bro . William Mann for the efficient manner in whioh he had carried out his dnties as Tyler of thc Lodgo for the period of eleven years , and that tho brethren be invited to subscribe to present Bro . Mann with a small token of their appreciation of tho honesty , civility and trustworthiness always shown by him as Steward of the Masonic Rooms at Warwick . "

SYMPATHY LODGE , No . 855 .

THE annual installation festival took placo at tho Town Hall , Wotton-under-Edgo , on the 6 th inst ., when Bro . Llewellyn White was installed as W . M . for the ensuing year . The ceremony was performed by Bro . F . Milltnan , assisted by Bros R . V . Vassar-Smith D . P . G . M ., G . II . Perrin , H . Perrott , and W . T . Gould . Tho following wero appointed and invested as Officers : —Bros . E . 11 .

FRIENDSHIP AND UNITY LODGE , No . 1271 .

rpHE ordinary monthly meeting , held on Monday , the 5 th inst ., x partook of rather a special character , the brethren attending in force to take a farewell of their much respected Treasurer Bro . Col . Magrath , J . P ., P . M . 926 and 1271 P . P . G . J . W . ( Madras ) P . P . G . J . D . ( Wilts ) . The I . P . M . Bro . C . W . Bryant presided , and in referring to the gallant Colonel said it was with unfeigned regret tbat the brethren hoard of his approaching departure , as thoy could not fail to

recognise and duly appreciate his zeal and ability as a Mason , and the valuable services he had rendered as a Master , Past Master , and Ireasnrer . The Colonel , in responding , said that although ho had been connected with several Lodges , having been a Mason for " years , yet big membership had never exceeded two or three years _ . . - — v v--.... f * . . — . .. ww .-v ~ . w .. w vi VU .. After the ceremony of installation and other Masinic business was concluded the Lodgt *** waa closed iu firm and order , and the brethren sat down to a banquet served up in excellent style by Mrs . S . Alder , son , of tho King ' s Arms Hotel .

THE annual meeting took place on the Gth inst ., at tho King ' s Head Hotel , Diss . Bro . David Simpson waa duly installed as W . M ., the ceremony being most ably performed by Bro . the Rev . G . J . Martyn D . P . G . M . Suffolk and P . G . C . England . The W . M . appointed his Officers , as follow : —Bros . G . W . Webb I . P . M ., II . C . Green S . W ., G . S . Panks J . W ., T . Slack Treasurer , J . Flatman P . M . Secretary , A .

Tyrrell S . D ., J . J . Rash J . D ., Arnold Bobby I . G ., P . M . ' a Evens and Rice Stewards ; W . Craoknell Organist , R . Staff Tyler . Before the closing of the Lodge a handsome P . M . ' s jewel was presented to Bro . Flatman for the services he had rendered to the Lodge since its formation , twelve years since . The brethren afterwards celebrated

their St . John's festival by a banquet , presided over by the newly elected W . M . About thirty were present . The . WiM . proposed the usual Loyal and Masonio toasts , and a very interesting account of the Masonic Charities was given by Bro . the Rov . C . J . Martyn . . Several capital songs were snng , and a very interesting meeting was brought to a close with the Tyler ' s toast .

PRIORY OF ACTON LODGE , No . 1996 .

THE installation meeting was held at the Berrymead Priory , High Street , Acton , on Monday , the 5 th inst . There were present Bros . C . E . Botley P . M . acting W . M ., E . Monson jnn . I . P . M ., G . Wright P . M ., F . Botley P . M . D . C , C . W . Francis S . W ., A . J . Phillips J . W ., J . A . Cammell P . M . acting Secretary , S . Gissing Skelton S . D ., W . Hirst P . M . J . D ., C . E . Sutton I . G ., A . G . H . Dicker , C . Pearce . Visitors : —Bros . W . G . H . Monson , P . Monson , J . A . Craven , W .

Eydmann , and R . Williams . The Lodge was op ned and the minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed . A letter was read from the W . M ., Bro . J . R . Ward , stating that owing to continued ill health he was unable to be present , which he very much regretted . ' Bro . G . W . Francis was then presented by the Director of Ceremonies to the acting W . M . as W . M . elect . A Board of Installed Masters having been

formed , the W . M . elect was duly installed into the chair of K . S . The W . M . invested Bro . G . Monson jnn . as I . P . M . for Bro . J . R . Ward , and tho Board of Installed Masters was closed . The Brethren having saluted the W . M ., the Installing Master presented aud explained the working tools of the various degrees . The W . M . thon appointed and invested his Officers , as follow : —Bros . A . J .-Phillips S . W ., S . Gissing

Skelton J . W ., Rev . A . G . H . Dicker Chaplain , E .. Monson jnn . P . M . Treasurer , J . A Cammell P . M . Secretary , W . Hirst V ' M . SJD . G . F . Sutton P . M . J . D ., Harrison Tyler . The investiture of I . G . was deferred until next meeting . The Installing Master then' gave the usual addresses . The Report of the Audit Committee was adopted . Tho Worshipful Master having received the hearty

congratulations of the brethren , Lodge was closed . Tbe brethren then adjourned to the banqueting hall , where justice was done to a capital banquet , provided by Bro . Brooks , of the George and Dragon , High-street , Acton , which gave general satisfaction , the tables and room being very prettily decorated with flowers , and plants . On the removal of the cloth the nsnal Loyal and Masonio toasts were duly

honoured . The noting I . P . M . having taken the gavel said ,. all the brethren knew for what purpose he rose ; after warmly eulogising the working of the W . M ., he asked the brethren to drink to the very good health of their W . M ., wishing him many years of happiness . Tho W . M . thanked the brethren for tho very kind manner in which the toast had been received . After referring to the perfect harmony

which had always characterised the Priory Lodge , he said , —Of Masonry itself it was difficult to speak in few words . Masonry embraced the whole scope of hnman experience , both subjective and objective . Its degrees comprised Religion , Morality , every phase of Virtue , Science , Art , Literature , and that most interesting of hnman studies—the knowledge of one ' s self . The Freemason was , in the

first place , impressed with his duty towards God and his duty towards his neighbour . Reverence for the Doity had rightly beeu made a special object in Masonry ; indeed , it seemed pretty clear that the great secret of the mysteries of anciont days was the unity of God in times when polytheism prevailed . Tbe good Mason never failed in his dnty to his neighbour ; he was a good man iu every relation of life—a good

son—a good husband—a good father—a good friend ; the princi ples of Masonry imbued all his daily transactions . As a next step , the Freemason was urged to cnltivate and improve his mind by the pursuit of Science , Art , or Literature . Finally , he was invited to meditate upon thoso virtues which adorn the inward man . And he who could clearly see their beauty and sterling value , as presented to

him in Masonry , the perfectly jusl and upright man , would even prefer to die rather than betray tho principles of truth and honour . The W . M . thon gave the toast of tbe I . P . M . Bro . J . R . Ward , and was indeed sorry that he was not able to be with them that evening ; he knew that Bro . Ward sincerely regretted his inability to be present ; from the very serious natnre " of his ailments he was not

permitted to . bo out in tho night air . He ( the W . M . ) trusted , however , tbat at their next meeting Bro . Ward would be sufficiently recovered to join them . Bro . E . Monson jun . suitably responded for Bro . Ward . The toast of the Installing Master being given , and replied to by Bro . C . E . Botley , who had come specially from Hastings for tho purpose of Installing tho W . M ., who was his father in Masonry , the toast of the Visitors followed , coupled with it tha

names of Bros . Williams , Monson , Pjydmann , Guy and Craven , each of whom suitably replied . The toast of tho Past Masters was given , and duly responded to by Bros . Wright and Botley . The toast of the Treasurer and Secretary was then coupled with that of the Officers of the Lodge , and responded to by Bros . E . Monson jnn ., J . A . Cuniniell and A . il . Phillips . Tho Tyler's toust brought a very pleasant and enjoyable evening to a close . The musical programme was under the direction of Bro . E . H . Sugg P . M . 453 P . P . G . O . Surrey ,

The investiture of I . G . was deferred until next meeting . The Installing Master then' gave the usual addresses . The Report of the Audit Committee was adopted . Tho Worshipful Master having received the hearty

congratulations of the brethren , Lodge was closed . Tbe brethren then adjourned to the banqueting hall , where justice was done to a capital banquet , provided by Bro . Brooks , of the George and Dragon , High-street , Acton , which gave general satisfaction , the tables and room being very prettily decorated with flowers , and plants . On the removal of the cloth the nsnal Loyal and Masonio toasts were duly

honoured . The noting I . P . M . having taken the gavel said ,. all the brethren knew for what purpose he rose ; after warmly eulogising the working of the W . M ., he asked the brethren to drink to the very good health of their W . M ., wishing him many years of happiness . Tho W . M . thanked the brethren for tho very kind manner in which the toast had been received . After referring to the perfect harmony

which had always characterised the Priory Lodge , he said , —Of Masonry itself it was difficult to speak in few words . Masonry embraced the whole scope of hnman experience , both subjective and objective . Its degrees comprised Religion , Morality , every phase of Virtue , Science , Art , Literature , and that most interesting of hnman studies—the knowledge of one ' s self . The Freemason was , in the

first place , impressed with his duty towards God and his duty towards his neighbour . Reverence for the Doity had rightly beeu made a special object in Masonry ; indeed , it seemed pretty clear that the great secret of the mysteries of anciont days was the unity of God in times when polytheism prevailed . Tbe good Mason never failed in his dnty to his neighbour ; he was a good man iu every relation of life—a good

son—a good husband—a good father—a good friend ; the princi ples of Masonry imbued all his daily transactions . As a next step , the Freemason was urged to cnltivate and improve his mind by the pursuit of Science , Art , or Literature . Finally , he was invited to meditate upon thoso virtues which adorn the inward man . And he who could clearly see their beauty and sterling value , as presented to

him in Masonry , the perfectly jusl and upright man , would even prefer to die rather than betray tho principles of truth and honour . The W . M . thon gave the toast of tbe I . P . M . Bro . J . R . Ward , and was indeed sorry that he was not able to be with them that evening ; he knew that Bro . Ward sincerely regretted his inability to be present ; from the very serious natnre " of his ailments he was not

permitted to . bo out in tho night air . He ( the W . M . ) trusted , however , tbat at their next meeting Bro . Ward would be sufficiently recovered to join them . Bro . E . Monson jun . suitably responded for Bro . Ward . The toast of the Installing Master being given , and replied to by Bro . C . E . Botley , who had come specially from Hastings for tho purpose of Installing tho W . M ., who was his father in Masonry , the toast of the Visitors followed , coupled with it tha

names of Bros . Williams , Monson , Pjydmann , Guy and Craven , each of whom suitably replied . The toast of tho Past Masters was given , and duly responded to by Bros . Wright and Botley . The toast of the Treasurer and Secretary was then coupled with that of the Officers of the Lodge , and responded to by Bros . E . Monson jnn ., J . A . Cuniniell and A . il . Phillips . Tho Tyler's toust brought a very pleasant and enjoyable evening to a close . The musical programme was under the direction of Bro . E . H . Sugg P . M . 453 P . P . G . O . Surrey ,
