To thc Editor of the FREEMASON ' CHRONICLE . DEAR SIR AND BROTIIKK , —Among tho alterations propoflod in the rules of the Royal Masonio Benevolent Institution is ono minting lo the period ( luring which tho widow of a deceased annuifaut may receive ono-half of her late husband ' s annuity . This it ia proposed to increase from three years to five , an

alteration I approve of , bnt one which hardly goes far enough , I think . Would it not be better to continue the half annuity for an indefinite period , subject to the approval of the House Committee ? If this were done I venture to think many of the widows wonld prefer to have the £ 20 a year ( half pay ) than commence a contest for a full widows' allowance of £ 32 . The

Institution wonld thus save £ 12 a year on each annuity , and tha friends of the candidate would not havo the trouble and expense of again securing the election of , virtually , the same case . I think this proposal is worthy of consideration at tho present time , when such strong efforts aro being made to relieve the Institntion of its painfully long list of candidates . DEAR SIR AND BROTIIKR . —The caso oftho widow of a deceased American Mason , who is now resident in this country , suffering from rheumatism and with seven children to provide for , who , among them , earn ten shillings pur week , wns recently referred to in tlio Humht'i

dimes . It is therein stated "tbe . English Freemasons do not recognise an American certificate , "—tho husband was a member of Amity Lodge , No . 323 , New York , —a statement that must cause strange feeling to many Craftsmen who have heard ofor experienced the benevolent actions of American Masons towards English

Craftsmen who have unhappily found themselves destitute in a foreign land . I can hardly advise any alteration in the laws of English Freemasonry to meet this particular appeal , yot think some provision should be made for similar cases . It is not in the nature of our American brethren to retaliate iu such matters , but one can imagine

a cry of indignation being raised in this country if a few months hence we should hear of an English lady and her seven children being refused Masonio assistance because a similar American case in our own country was neglected by those in authority . In addition to the departure from the spirit of Freemasonry shown in refusing assistance simply because the husband was au American Slasou , there

is tbe danger of bringing tho Order into disrepute in consequence of the reference iu the public prints of the country to a palpable flaw in the organisation of the Craft . The correspondent who wrote to the Sunday Times says ho has reported the case to the Grand Lodgo hero , and I shall bo pleased to learu that some method has been discovered to break the rulo which seems to limit the charity of our Grand Lodge to English Masons .
