PORTSMOUTH FREEMASONS' HALL AND CLUB COMPANY .

THE directors of this company have issued the following report : " Gentlemen , the directors submit the balance-sheet for the past year , from which it will be seen that the balance will allow the payment of a dividend of two and a half per cent ., free of income tax . The alterations and improvements whioh were approved by

the shareholders on the 19 th January 1885 , and confirmed at the annual meeting on the 31 st March 1885 have been completed , necessitating an additional mortgage of £ 120 to meet the extra capital expenditure . The dispute with the builder , which was referred to arbitration by the shareholders , has been decided in

favour of the company , and the matter settled . The system of club management submitted to the shareholders on the 19 th January 1885 not having been successful in inducing an accession of club members to compensate for the increased outlay , the directors resolved to alter the system , so as to reduce the expenditure , in the

interests of the shareholders . The new system came into operation on the 1 st October last , and is working successfully ; it now only remains for those having a financial interest in the concern to give the undertaking their patronage and support j as it should be borne in mind that the property , from its position , is yearly increasing in

value . During the year , the vacancy on the directorate caused by the resignation of Mr . A . W . White has been provisionally filled by the board in inducing Mi-. John Henry Corke , T . O ., to join the directorate . This "intlo nan , with Messrs . William Miles , Henry

COMMERCIAL MUSEUMS . —One of the questions of the hour is that of establishing commercial museums , and it is very patent that English manufacturers will have to strain every nerve to retain the foreign , and in some trades , the home markets . One great difficulty in the way of the British manufacturer is , that he is often at a loss

to ascertain what particular patterns of goods are suitable for one market , and what for another . The same class of textiles , hardware , and other goods , which are adapted for the South American markets are not snited for our Colonies , and so manufacturers are often in perplexity respecting this vital matter . Various methods for the

establishment of commercial museums have been suggested . One ia that there be in London one large building devoted to samples of merchandise , and , in other plans put farward , that they be established in a few large centres as well as in London . In his book on Free Public Libraries , Mr . Thomas Greenwood points out how

well adapted these admirable institutions are for this scheme of establishing commercial museums . It is evident that manufacturers in Nottingham , Leeds , or Sheffield , could not visit London every time they wished to examine a particular pattern . Why should not these , and all other towns , have a Commercial Musenm attached to

their Free Library ? These museums ^ to be of any practical value , must be local . Free libraries are the property of the ratepayers , supported by a rate which never exceeds a penny in the pound per year on the rateable value . These buildings are , in a considerable number of towns , exceedingly well adapted to form the nucleus of commercial museums .
