Upon this evening there were admitted into the Lodge three new members , in the persons of Bro . John Farley , and Messrs . Eobert Race and Thos . Boardman Bolton . The first was a joining member , hailing from the Fidelity Lodge , No . 209 , Blackburn ,

whilst the latter were initiates . The ceremonies were performed respectively by the W . M . and Bro . Scholfield , both being assisted by Bros . John Studd P . M . and Sam . Gaskill J . W . The latter is making remarkably steady progress , and s-hows signs of developing into a more than ordinarih efficient officer .

The usual festive board followed , wbtn Loj'al and Masonic toasts were pioposcd and responded to . That . of the Initiates was proposed by the W . M ., in his usual finished manner . In responding , Bro . Race saiel that " anj' diffidence which he might have felt in sasing a few words in response to the toast so kindly proposed , would have been entirely dispelled by the cordiality with which the Brethren had received his fellow Initiate and himself . He owed a

debt of gratitude to his good friend the Junior Warden for having introduced him to the Lodge . He had been deeply impressed with the ceremony of initiation , unfolding , as it proceeded , beauties he had not dreamt of ; and he had been more than delighted with the brotherly kindness shown to him by the members . He thanked them all heartily for their very warm reception , and hored the future would see him develop into a Mason as good and true as the most exacting of his Brethren could desire . "

Other toasts followed , which were very agreeably relieved by songs , recitations , & c , from Bros . Spurr , Owles , Gailick , Gaskill , J . \ Y . Maltby , and Pajne Clarke , the two latter being well known in musical circles . o o o

LODGE OF SYMPATHY , No . 483 . AFRESH and remarkable epoch in the historj of this Lodge took place on Wednesday , when , by permission of tin- Piovincial Grand Master of Kent , itsmeeting place was removed to commedicus quarters at the Royal Clarendon Hotel , Gravesend . Although established so far back as 1842 , the Lodge for st me time jast had been in a languishing condition , but recently greater energy has been displayed by the successive Masters , and during the time that

Bro . R . J . Beamish occupied the chair considerable advancement was made . The present W . M ., Bro . Thomas T . Hogg , determined to mark his year of office by an entirely new departure . Subscriptions were invited , and a handsome set of Lodge furniture was purchased at a cost altogether of some £ 120 , while Bro . Hogg , in addition to liberal contributions , presented a beautiful banner on which has been designed the new seal or crest of the Lodge .

As might have been expected on such an occasion a large number of Brethren assembled to assist at the opening ceremony at the new quarters . There being a considerable amount of business to transact , the Lodge was opened at five o ' clock by Bro .

After the minutes of the last meeting had been confirmed , the Treasurer's report was presented . This , considering the great expense that had been incurred , was highly satisfactory , and as will be seen later on did not prevent the Loelgefrom exercising their usual benevolence . Bro . It . Brown , of the Capper Lodge . No . 1076 , was accepted as a Joining Member and took his seat in the Lodge .

Messrs . Wm . Matthews , Ernest Ingman , Edward Matthews , John Withford Cork , and Wm . Spencer Bowen , were balloted for and approved ; and , being in attendance , were duly initiated into the mysteries and privileges of Freemasonry by Bro . Hogg . In order to avoid confusion the first three candidates were taken alone , and the ceremony proceeded as far as the investituro , when the other

two were admitted and the initiation thus far repeated ; the address being subsequently delivered to all the new made Brethren . The chair was then taken by Bro . J . P . Moore P . M ., and the Lodge having been opened in tho second degree Bro . William Denton was passed . Both ceremonies wero admirably rendered , and made

an evident impression on the respective candidates . This most desirable result is evidently duo to the capital training obtained in the Lodge of Instruction which , under the Preceptorship of Bro . Henry Forss P . M . and P . Z ., has frequently been alluded to in our columns . '

On the proposition of Bro . Hogg , seconded by Bro . Beamish , the sum of five guineas was voted to be placed on Bro . lionaldson's list as Steward for the Roj al Masonic Benevolent Institution . In returning thanks the Treasurer stated that he was able to take up no less a sum than ± ' 62 15 s at the recent Festival , which he thought , considering their limited numbers , was something to be proud of .

Bro . Beamish then proposed , and Bro . Doughty seconded , that a vote of thanks be accorded to the W . M ., and entered on the minutes , for the very handsome present he lad made to the Brethren in the shape of the Lodge banner . This was carried amid

great applaus-e . A petition fnma distressed Brother was signed and recommended to the Provincial Grand Lodge ; and another candidate having been proposed , the Lodge was closed in perfect harmony , and the Brethren adjourned to the banquet hall where a capital dinner was served by Bro . Baldock .

The usual Loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured , and many eulogistic and complimentary speeches were made , the general opinion being that the Lodge had effected a judicious move towards success . The evening ' s entertainment was enlivened by several songs by the Brethren , Bro . Ayling Organist officiating at the piano . o o o
