The Egyptian Lodge of Instruction , No . 27 , has removed from the Duval Restaurant , Newgate Street , to the Clarence Hotel , 88 Aldersgate Street , E . C , where future meetings will be held every Tuesday , at 7 o'clock .

Bro . F . B . Westlake has been appointed official visitor to the Masonic Lodges and Chapters in the Three Towns and neighbourhood , says the " Western Mercury , " but the office is a new one to us , and some explanation seems necessary .

Writing from Gosport , Bro . the Rev . F . B . N . Norman-Lee Grand Chaplain of England , Chaplain to the Sixth Division ordered to South Africa , observes : "May I ask for gifts of novels , picture papers , magazines , games , draughts ,

backgammon , cribbage-boards , halma , packs of cards , for use of the troops of the Sixth Division , which will shortly be leaving ? Any parcels , carriage paid , may be addressed to me at Embarkation Office , Empress Dock , Southampton , and will be most gratefully accepted . "

The 9 th January is to be a festive occasion among the Freemasons of Chesterfield . The Consecration of the Scarsdale Lodge , No . 529 , of Mark Master Masons , a Warrant for which has just been granted by the M . W . Grand Master the Prince of Wales , and of which Bro .

W . W . Jeudwine will be the first Master , will take place in the afternoon , the Prov . G . Master of Derbyshire Bro . A . Woodiwiss performing the impressive ceremony . Later on there will be a banquet , and in the evening the whole of the Masons of Chesterfield are combining in holding a Masonic

Ball , the proceeds of which it has been decided to give to the Chesterfield and District War Fund . Full regalia will be worn , and as there will be a number of- Grand Lodge and

Prov . Grand Lodge Officers present , both Mark and Craft , says the " Derbyshire Times , " the function may reasonably be expected to be brilliant as a spectacle and successful for the object for which it is being arranged .

A pleasing exception to the well-worn axiom that gratitude is a lively sense of favours to come , was forthcoming at the annual meeting of the Royal Female Orphan Asylum , presided over by Bro . Sir John B . Monckton P . G . W ., at the Cannon Street Hotel . Mr . Brough Maltby , the

Secretary , reported that recently he received a letter from an old inmate enclosing a cheque for £ 200 as a gift to the charity . The communication set forth in touching terms how she had as a child been placed under the shelter of the asylum in the year 1829 . She left nine years later , and entered

domestic service , retiring from it in 1882 , after more than forty-five years of diligent work and careful economy . She had intended to bequeath this sum to the charity as a token of her gratitude , but , after careful consideration , felt it would

be wiser not to wait for others to send the money in her name , but to do it herself . —We wonder how many of the ex-pupils of the Masonic Schools are in a position to do something similar ? and how many who even give a passing thought to the benefits they received—freely and voluntarily ?

The fifteenth annual North London Masonic Benevolent ball is to be held at Freemasons' Tavern , on Thursday , 25 th January . This year ' s president is Bro . Alfred Holder—the Holder of two prominent hostelries in the " Merrie Village , " who gets younger and not Holder as time goes on , and is ,

therefore , the proper man to act as " Judicious bottle Holder " at a ball supper , and to see that every man who gets a partner manages to Hold her properly . Bro . Willie Wright ' s Middlesex Quadrille Band will be in attendance , so that with the male sex , the fair sex , and the Middlesex , things ought to

be harmonious . Last year the ball yielded £ 90 for the Masonic Charities , after every Brother and his sister had had their due . Considering that the pleasures of the mazy dance , the supper , and light refreshments are given for the small sum of 12 s 6 d , it is a sort of Charity that one cannot feel a

burden . My dancing days are over , although according to some people I do dance hornpipes when the cause is good . I shall not be seen whirling in the waltz or polking in the

polka at the Benevolent ball , but I shall play the part of the intelligent onlooker , and give them the office when they get mixed up in the Caledonians . — "Ye Merrie Villager , " in "Islington Gazette . "

OTHE WORLD'S BEST BICYCLE . ffiyitflamb - ^ Q ^ T £ 10 10 s . £ 12 12 s . £ 18 18 s , CLEVELAND BALL AND ROLLER BEARINGS Are a combination of balls and rollers so constructed to answer both purposes of ball retainer and separator . Its greatest advantage is less friction , and will run 10 per cent , easier than the ordinary ball bearing . The rollers permit of balls rolling in same direction , whereas in regular bearing the balls roll towards each other , and cause extra friction . By actual coasting test , also running it at hig h" rate of speed in factory , it has been found superior in every way to the ordinary bearings . It is noiseless and does away with dropping of balls . The Lozier Manufacturing Co ., 25-27 Orchard Street , Oxford Street , London , W .
