expressly to purge dramatic literature of the Jewish element that pervaded it . A violent polemic followed , in which the clerical papers seriously put the question : " Is it right for a Christian theatre to produce before a Christian audience the dramatic work of a professed Freemason ? Shall a

Christian theatre pay a Freemason a percentage of profits , and help him earn money and fame ? The Freemasons are hammering at the throne of our beloved Emperor , and , if they can , will overturn it . All who feel as patriots and Christians must protest against these shameful proceedings . "

Dr . Lueger , the Mayor , was asked in yesterday ' s sitting of the Municipal Council whether he knew of this scandalous affair , and whether he would set things right . He replied , however , that he had no influence upon the management of the theatre , and had responsibilities enough without being

held accountable for such matters . So the Anti-Semites have had their way , and now triumphantly announce" that Ressel has withdrawn from the Lodge . There is little doubt that otherwise they would have deprived him of his little office and the modest salary with which he keeps his family .

The Vienna Clerical organ , the " Vaterland , " in a leading article , says the " Times , " holds international Freemasonry responsible for the present situation in Spain , pointing out that the disturbances began immediately after the commencement of the debate on the Association Bill in

the French Chamber of Deputies . The " Vaterland " puts before its readers certain extracts from speeches delivered at the Freemasons' Congress held in Paris in September 1 900 , advocating Franco-Spanish Republican fraternity . One of them was by the Grand Master of the Spanish Grand Orient ,

and the . other by a French Brother Mason . Even if , by extending their proceedings to international politics , the Continental Freemasons lay themselves open to the attacks of the Vatican Press , it is the subversive and reactionary activity of international Ultramontanism , and certainly not Freemasonry , that is doing the mischief .
