Grand Lodge , England , to deal with the question , and we doubt not the Committee to whom has been entrusted the delicate task of inquiring into tho matter will deal with it judicially , and with the most anxious desire to clo what is just and proper under the circumstances .

ROYAL MASONIC BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION .

THE Annual Festival of this Institution was held on Wednesday , 13 th inst ., at Freemasons' Tavern , London , and was presided over by his Grace the Duke of Manchester K . P . & o . & c , E . W . Prov . Grand Master of Northamptonshire and Huntingdonshire The

meeting was well attended by brethren from all parts of the country , and the result shows that tho Stewards have well fulfilled their duties . At the termination of tho banquet , the usual toasts were given by the chairman ; after that of Her most gracious Majesty the Queen , tho National Anthem was sung ; this was followed by that of

H . R . H . tho Prince of Wales , the Princess of Wales , and the other members of tho Eoyal family . The interest which our Grand Master takes , both in Masonry and in tho general business of tho country , was yearly increasing . He would not linger over the preliminary toasts , as he felt sure that all of those present were anxious to hear

the announcement of the contributions of the Craft on behalf of the Benevolent Institution . Tho toast of the Pro Grand Master was given and duly honoured , and was followed by that of the Deputy Grand Master , and the Present and Past G . Officers ; with this latter tho noble ohairman coupled the name of Bro . John Hervey the Grand

Secretary . In his reply , Bro . Hervey stated that the Grand Officers felt grateful to their noble chairman for tho very cordial way in which he had spoken of them j they were pleased to see so inflential a

meeting to support the chairman , and to assist in carrying out the principles of Masonic Charity . He conoluded by thanking the brethren on behalf of the Grand Officers . The next toast was that of Success to the Institution . The chairman was gratified at seeing so

Last Monday he had had the pleasure of pay . ing a visit to the Asylum at Croydon , and was gratified at the way the Institution is managed , and the attention paid to the comfort of , ' tho inmates . All must feel happy at being able to relieve their distressed brethren . He called upon Bro . Tomkins to

reply . Bro . Tomkins briefly acknowledged the toast , and was followed by Bro . Terry , who , amid great enthusiasm , announced that the total subscriptions he was in a position to acknowledge amounted to £ 11 , 090 9 s 6 d , with nine lists yet to come in ; this sum had been collected by 221 Stewards ,

of whom 116 represented London Lodges , collecting among them £ 6 , 062 7 s ; 104 Country , contributing £ 4 , 969 4 s 6 d ; and one Colonial , with £ 58 18 s . Of the Provinces , Hertfordshire , represented by six Stewards , contributed the largest amount , the exertions of its repro . sentatives resulting in a total of £ 633 19 s 6 d . West Yorkshire came

next , with £ 603 5 s , and then Cornwall , which , in compliment to the Stewardship of their Grand Master , had sent up contributions amounting to £ 570 . The next toast given was that of the Chairman , this was proposed by Bro . the Eight Hon . the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , P . G . M . Cornwall , and heartily received . In acknowledg .

ing tho toast , His Grace tho Duke of Manchester referred to tho amount it had been his pleasure to hear announced as coming from Cornwall , ho was extremely gratified at the kind way in which his Bro . the G . M . of that Province had proposed his health , and also for the support ho had given to the Institution . Ho hoped ho had

carried out the duties of the chair to the satisfaction of the brethren . Tho other Institutions was next given , and Bro . Binckos replied . Bro . Eaynham Stewart proposed the Stewards . He , aa well as other members of the Craft , must bo extremely pleased to know that thoy had been able to raise so large an amount . Bro . J . Smith replied :

the Stewards were pleased to hear that their efforts had given satis , faction . Bro . C . H . Gregory gave tho Ladies , after which the brethren adjourned to the Temple , where a concert was provided ,

under the direction of Bro . S . Lehmeyer , he being assisted by Mesdames Thaddeus Wells , Liebhart , Miss Webster , Navarre , and Arnim ; Bro . Penna , and Mossrs . D , Thomas , Stanislaus and Horscroft .
