Brother Sadler's Answer To Bro. Jacob Norton's
BROTHER SADLER'S ANSWER TO BRO . JACOB NORTON'S
"COMMENTS ON FACTS AND FICTIONS . " The following is a copy of the Warrant referred to in the concluding paragraph of my paper in last week ' s issue of the FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE : —
BLESINTON GD . MASTER , Wm . Holford D . G . M . Jas . Nisbet S . G . W . John Aberoromby J . G . W . TO ALL WHOSC IT MAY CONCERNWe the Grand Lodge in ample form assembled do hereby
authorise and Impower our Trusty and well beloved Brethren , Thomas Killinghj , MASTER , James Wood , SENK . WARDEN * , and William B . rily , JUNE . WARDEN ( with their lawful assistants ) , To form and hold a Lodge of FREE AND ACCEPTED ANCIENT MASONS at the
sign of the Punch Bowl in Peck . Lane in the Town of Nottingham ( or elsewhere ) and in said Lodge Admit , Enter , and make Masons according to tbe Ancient and Honourable Custom of the Royal Craft in all Ages and Nations throughout the Known World .
No . LXII . And we do hereby farther Impower our said Trusty and well-beloved Brethren Thomas Killingly , James Wood and William Baily ( with their lawful Assistants ) To Nominate Chuse and Instal their Successors , whom they are to invest with their power and
Dignity , & c , and such Successors shall in like manner Nominate Chuse and Instal their Successors , & c , & c , & c , such Installations to be on every St . John ' s Day during the Continuance of this Lodge for
Ever , providing the above Named Brethren and their Successors always pay due Respect to this Right Worshipful GRAND LODGE of Free and Accepted Ancient Masons , otherwise this Warrant to be of no force nor virtue .
Given under our hands and Seal of the Grand Lodge , London , this thirteenth day April Anno Dom . 1757 . Anno Lap . 5757 . LAU . DERMOTT G . S .
The other "Warrant , dated 6 fch day of Jane 1759 , is very similar to the older one , but it bears the additional words " Grand Lodge of York Masons , London , " ( showing , as I have stated , thafc the adoption of the York tradition was an after thought , and had nothing whatever to do with the
origin of the " Ancients ) . Both of them bear what I believe to be the actual signature of Lord Blesinton , or " Blessington , " bufc what Bro . Norton would have us to believe are merely forgeries of Dermott ; they also bear the
signature of the D . G . M . and the Grand Wardens , and in my opinion one is as little likely to be a . forgery as the others are . Having carefully examined and compared
these two signatures , I have no hesitation in saying thafc they were both written by the same person , and that person was not Laurence Dermott .
Although perfectly convinced myself of the genuineness of these documents , as well as of the authenticity of the correspondence relating to Lord Blessington , alluded to by Brother Norton in the CHRONICLE , NO . 722 , I felt that
I ought to make an effort to satisfy the scruples of those friends who have nofc the opportunity of personally inspecting the original records . Accordingly , a few days ago I paid a visit to Sir Albert Woods ( Garter King at Arms ) ,
our Grand Director of Ceremonies , to whom I am already under many obligations , and who is afc all times most willing to assist me in my researches , both Masonic aud otherwise . Sir Albert at once pointed out to me , in fche
official records , three different ways of spelling the title of the nobleman in question , viz ., " Blesington , " " Blessington , " and "Blesinton . " He also informed me that the Will of the Countess of Blesinton was proved in the year 1774 ( her
husband died in 1769 ) , and suggested that I should go to Somerset House , and ascertain how she spelt the name . He was also good enough to say that he would write to Ireland , and endeavour to obtain further information on the subject .
It really ought not to be necessary to remind a person of Bro . Norton ' s erudition that considerable license formerly existed in regard to the spelling of the family names of . some of our nobility , aud that what was generally deemed the most correct mode was the way the owner spelt it himself .
