Finch , of Great Baddow , was installed into the chair of Worshipfnl Master , whioh has been filled for the past year by Bro . Hutley , for the second time . About 30 brethren were nrnaont . including Bros . Eustace . Barrett , and Meggy Visitors . The

oeremony was ably performed by Bro . Gowers , Bro . Green , the indefatigable Seoretary , acting as Direotor of Ceremonies . The W . M . afterwards invested the Officers : —Bros . Gowers S . W ., Bright J . W ., Rev . E . R . Horwood Chaplain , Sansom Treasurer , Green Seoretary ,

FRIENDSHIP AND UNITY LODGE , No . 1271

THE installation festival took placo at Bradford-on-Avon , on Mouday , the 3 rd inst . The W . M . eleot was Bro . Wassell S . W ., who waa duly installed by the Right Hon . the Earl of Radnor Provincial Grand Master , assisted by Bro . Bryant D . C . The W . M . afterwards invested his Offioers for the year , and presided over a dinner held at the Old Bear Hotel , at which the oustomary toast list was gone through .

LANGTHORNE LODGE , No . 1421

THE usual meeting was held on Thursday , the 29 th nit ., at the Angel Hotel , Ilford . The Lodge having been opened in due form , the . minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed . Bros . J . Poston and H . W . Harrison were raised to the sublime degree of M . M . in an impressive manner by the W . M . Bro . H . Allard , and

then , other business having been transacted , the brethren adjourned to supper , after which the usual toasts wero given and responded to . Daring the evening some excellent muBic was rendered by Brothers Shimeld , Evans , M . Taylor , Doyle , Matthews , Turnpenny , and others .

After preliminaries , the Worshipfnl Master elect was presented nnd ho gave assent to the anoient charges . A Board of Ini-tnlled Masters wa <« formed , and Brother Pullen waa duly installed into the chair of

King Solomon , after whioh Bro . Martin I . P . M . gave the addresses n a very able and impressive manner . The W . M . invested hia Officers and the Lodge was closed in due form . The brethren adjourned to tbe banqueting table , where a splendid men a was admirably arransred

under the personal superintendence of Mrs . Venables . The evening was greatly enlivened by the singing of Bro . Swinford , Bro . Smith , Miss Julia Jones , and Misa Edith Gibbs , the musical arrangrmenta being admirably carried under Bro . Chovenx .

THE installation meeting was held at theJRoyal Pavilion , Brighton , on the 6 th inst . The Lodge was opened by the W . M . Bro . H . Packham . The chief business of the meeting was the installation of Bro . Carpenter as W . M . for the ensning year , the ceremony being admirably performed by Bro . Gill , assisted by Bro . T . Packham . The W . M . appointed his Offioers , as follow : —Bros . Flinn S . W .,

Molyneux-Ffennell J . W ., Bedford Treasurer ( re-elected ) , Shrivell Secretary , Dyer S . D ., Barber J . D ., Colbran Dir . of Cers ., Garrett I . G ., Norman Roe Organist , Taxford , Olliver , Insell , and RofFey Stewards , Stanton Tyler ( re-elected ) . Bro . Carpenter W . M . was re-eleoted Charity Steward , and Bro . Gill to serve on the Pavilion

Rooms Committee . The Lodge having been closed , the brethren adjourned to tho banqueting room , where they sat down to an elegant banquet , under the presidency of the newly elected W . M . Bro . Carpenter . The customary loyal toasts having been duly honoured , the W . M . proposed the Officers of Grand Lodge Present

and Past , to whioh the Provincial Grand Secretary responded . The W . M . next proposed the Most Worshipfnl Provincial Grand Master , H . R . H . the Duke of Connanght Provincial Grand Master , the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , Bro . the Right Hon . Sir W . T . Marriott , Q . C ., M . P ., P . G . S ., and Officers of Provincial Grand Lodge Present

and Past . He spoke in eulogistic terms of the great interest the Duke of Connanght took in all matters pertaining to Freemasonry , and more especially in those relating to hiB own Province of Sussex , The Duke , he said , had many calls upon his time , bnt upon every possible occasion he bad visited Snssex , either to preside at Provincial

Lodge meetings or to consecrate new Lodges , and the brethren were hoping to see him shortly at the approaching Provincial Grand Lodge meeting . Sir W . T . Marriott , he continued , had ably carried out the duties of his office as Depoty Provincial Grand Master , and , in the absence of the Dnke of Connaaght , had worthily tilled his place .

He had the Province thoroughly at heart , and he ( the W . M . ) and the Burrell Lodge felt houonred in having hira present that evening . Of the remaining Provincial Grand Officeis he also spake in praiseworthy terms , paying a special compliment to the Provincial Grand Secretary , who , he said , carried out . his duties admirably .

The Deputy Provincial Grand Master ( Bro . Sir W . T . Marriott ) met with a hearty reception on rising to respond . Thanking tbe brethreti for the cordial manner in which they had received the toast , he faid the brethren of Snssex regarded the Duke of Connanght , their Provinoial Grand Master , with Masonic affection , and he was sure tbey

folt it a great honour to have one so closely connected with Royalty at their head . Though the Dnke had mnltifuriom engagements , be was never forgetful of his dutio 3 to Freemasonry in Sussex . On his return from India he had visited the Province , and last year presided at the Provincial Grand Lodge . He had also promised to attend tbe

Provincial Grand Lodge at Brighton during the present month With regard to the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , he did not know him so well . A Greek philosopher bad said " know thyself , " and a Scotch poet had written " 0 wad some power the giftie gie ns , to see ooraels as ithers BOB ns . " He had been told that the Deputy

Provincial Grand Master had multifarious duties to perform , and that he was a "jack of all trades , " but that , amidst all his professional and political engagements , he took a hearty interest in Sussex Freemasonry , and that what he did for the Province of Sussex waa a labour of love . Speaking for himself , he said it had given him great

pleasure to visit the Burrell Lodge , and , referring to the other Provincial Grand Officers , bore testimouy to the excellent manner in which theyoarried out their duties , under the able direotion of thcit indefatigable Provincial Grand Secretary . Bro . H . Packham I . P . M . next proposed the AVorshipfnl MaBter . He said it had give-i him

great pleasure to see Bro . A . J . Carpenter rise step by step till ha hud reached the Master ' s chair . A more energetic Maacn , he snid , could not be found . Bro . Carpenter had worked well in the Lodge , and also splendidly as Charity Steward . Bro . A . J . Curpeii'er , on rising to respond , was greeted with enthusiasm . He said he could

not find words to adequately thank the brethren for the high honour they had conferred upon him . He had been a member of tbe Lo < % e for twelve yeara , and his ambition had been to reach the W . M . 's chair . He had worked up the ladder step by step ; he had studied the work , and had been especially into rested in the Charities—the

foundation of Masonry . He was gratified to find that the Lodge had unanimously given him their confidence , and he hoped that confidence wonld not be misplaced . He woald do all he could to maintain the dignity and prestige of the Lodge , his one desire being that , the Burrell Lodge shonid continue to flourish . Bro . W . Gill P . M . proposed the Worshipful Makers of the Lodges in the Provinoe , to
