Barber ( Lovo and Honour ) , J . W . Bailey , & o . Rev . Bro . Henry Evans , M . A ., Vicar of St . Peter ' s , Dew 3 bury Road , was ballottod for as a joining member and

accepted . Mr . Chas . Cry or and Mr . Edward Bentley wore bal . lotted for , aud being approved were initiated into tho mysteries of Freemasonry , the ceremonies being worked in that efficieut

and impressive manner for which this Lodge is celebrated . The Provincial Grand Chaplain next gave his admirable exposition of tho Tracing Board in this degree . Worshipful Brother Tudor Trevor P . M . S . W . then delivered his instructive and admir . ible

lecture npon the two great pillars of the Temple . Ho said that somo agreed with Jo ? cphus that they were placed outside , or at tho entrance , whilst others placed them inside tho porch , on each side of the gate . Whatever their exatt situation , these pillars stood on the right and left , and were admired as well for their

marvellous beauty and workmanship as for their symbolical meaning . They were cast in brass , B . C . 1003 , in the clayey ground between Succoth and Ztircdatha , by Hiram oi ' Tyiv , who was filled with w " adorn aud understanding , and cunning to work all works in brars . The height of each pillar was IS cubits or 27 feet , and their

citcamfcreuce 12 cubits or IS feet . Including the chapiter , whuh was 7 j feet , tho total height was 33 feet 9 inches , but as tho pjrch w . 'ts 210 feet iu height their loftiness need not surprise us . On each pillar was set a chapiter , the precise form of which has caused much discussion , some describing it as a crown , and sima as

two crowns joined together , others as a globe or spherical body . The probable shape of the chapiter wa 3 an oval . Besides tbe pi'lus being very beautiful ornaments ( o the 'Temple , they wera most probably erected by King Salomon as memorials to the Israelites of God's protecting providence . Such memorial

I pillai' 3 have existed not only from tho earliest times , as seen in the Egyptian obelisks , but we read of Jacob I commemorating by a pillar at Bethel his vi .-ion of the angelic I host ascending and descending from earth to Heaven on a ladder , ' than another u . G ; ilead in memory of hia alliance to Labau .

Joshua , Samuel , Absolom rind others erected memor ' al pillars ; so no doubt iu the 3 e two pillar . 3 King Solomon do-ired to perpetuate in tho minds of tin ; chi ' ikou of I-r . iol God ' s providence over thetn iu tho wilderness , and to remind them as they daily passed into the Temple of Ifis abundant and repeated promises of support .

The support of tho femp ' s virtually depended , it would appear , on these two magnificent columns , ami as their erection was typical of tho wealth and splendour' of King Solomon , so their

destruction , was typical of the ruin and annihilation of tho Jewish nation . Typically , f . o us , those [> illirs had great and important lessons , of '' '"' 'n'altv , and of charity . No Freemason could

ho an in ; ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ' -hemcr , or a slanderer , if he lirod up to hisgre . fc | u !¦ ' !; r - .- ¦¦ : ¦¦ : ¦ : ol . 'ig itions . As tho Temple was divided into three parts —the Porch , the Sanctuary , and the Holy of Holiesso Freemasonry i : i divided into three degrees , aud a 3 in the Tomplo

each step brought the worshipper nearer the Holy of Holies , so in tho Temple of Freemasonry we wcv-. > led step by step nearer the object of our researches , and we were reminded of the impartial justice of tho Most High , who had dtliued for our instruction the liusita of good and evil , anj that He would here-after

No Freemason could

each step brought the worshipper nearer the Holy of Holies , so in tho Temple of Freemasonry we wcv-. > led step by step nearer the object of our researches , and we were reminded of the impartial justice of tho Most High , who had dtliued for our instruction the liusita of good and evil , anj that He would here-after
