Brvant J ., Henry Smith P . Z . Treasurer , Jamps Stevens P . Z . S . E ., J . S . Terry P . J . S . N ., J .

W . Watts and H . Baldwin Assistants , G . Harrison Janitor . The minutes of last convocation having been read and confirmed , the ballot was taken for Bro . Henry Charles Jefferys , Burgoyne Lodge , No . 902 , who was proposed as a candidate for exaltation by the M . E . Z ., and seconded by E . Comp . Henry Smith P . Z . The result was in favonr of Bro . Jpiferys , who was introduced and exalted into

Royal Arch Masonry . The ceremony throughout was most carefully performed ; Comp . James Stevens undertook the duties of Principal Sojourner . The lectures were given by the three Principals most impressively , each vieing with tbe other to create an impression on the candidate . Comp . F . H . Clemow , of Anderton's Hotel , Fleet , street , was elected a joining member of this Chapter . The Auditors '

report was submitted ; it showed the financial condition of the Chapter was satisfactory , and that a small balance remained in the hands of the Treasurer . Comp . Samuel Poynter , the M . E . Z . elect , wbrse state of health rendered it imperative that he shonld not undergo the fatigue consequent upon the fulfilment of the heavy duties of the day , and whose post hitherto had been ably carried

ont by Comp . P . Z . Harvey , now entered the Chapter . Companion Poynter stated , in order that tha business might proceed with regularity he—much against the advice of his medical attendant—had ventured among them . He detailed the circumstances of his illness , and hoped the Companions wou'd excuse him from making a long stay with them on this occasion . He shonld have much enjoyed stopping

to the banqnet , but he felt it would be unwise for him to think of doing so . He assured the Companions that during the period he should have to preside over the Chapter he would do all he could to sustain its prestige , and hoped he might meet tbe members at their next Convocation , thoroughly restored to health . He much appreciated the honour they had done him in electing him to the highest

office in tbe Chapter , and once again assured them he wonld strive to do his duty . Comp . James Stevens then took the post of Installing Principal , and with a due observance of customary formalities , the Principals were placed into their respective chairs . Z ., who presided , in brief , bufc fitting terms introduced fche toasts customary on such occasions . Comp . Stevens , on behalf of the members , presented the I . P . Z . with the jewel of the Chapter , which compliment was gracefully acknowledged by the recipient . The jewel , which was much admired , bore the following inscription : —

The proceedings throughout were interspersed with songs and recitations ; altogether the evening passed over agreeably , Comp . Henry Smith exerting himself most successfully to make fche Visitors comfortable , and his efforts were thoroughly appreciated aud acknowledged by that body .

A Grand Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons of the Province of Surrey will be held this day ( Saturday ) , at 12 * 30 , at the Greyhound Hotel , High Street , Croydon . The M . E . Comp . General Studholme Brownrigg , C . B ., Grand Superintendent , will preside .

THE installation of Bro . Thomas Sherlock Graham as Right Worshipful District Grand Master of Otago and Southland took place on Thursday , 2 nd March , in the Temperance Hall Moray-place , Diinediu , in the presence of one of the largest assemblages of the Craffc yet witnessed here . Several years have elapsed since the last installation of so important an Officer as the District Grand Mastera functionary possessing in bis jurisdiction powers only secondary to

those of the M . W . Grand Master H . R . H . the Prince of Wales ; and therefore the ceremony of Thursday may justly bo considered worthy of being marked with a red letter in the annals of the district of Otago and Southland . The preparations made by tbe Board of General Purposes for the event were most complete , every part of the ceremonial being carried out with the utmost precision by the Officers entrusted with the details . The last event of the kind in connection with English Craft Masonry took place iu the old Maso-iic Hall , in Manse-street , on llth August 1864 , when the late and lamented R . W . Bro . John Lazar installed Bro . John Hyde Harris , aud

invested the Officers of the then Provincial Grand Lodge , with great eclat . Bufc the ceremony of Thursday was of a still more brilliant character , and was witnessed by representatives of every Craft Lodge in the District , who attended to pay homage to their new ruler . The proceedings commenced afc 5 . 30 p . m ., when the brethren who had assembled in the Masonio Hall raarcbed in procession to the adjoining

building , the npper hall of which had been specially fitted up for the occasion , and the W . M . of the Lodge of Otago proceeded to open the Lodge . This being done , the District Grand Lodge of Otago and Southland , E . G ., was announced , and received with appropriate honours . Bro . H . S . Fisk D . D . G . M . then opened the Lodge in due form , and the D . G . Secretary Bro . S . James proceeded to call the roll

of Lodges , those represented being—Otago , Dunedin , Port Chalmers Marine , Lake Lodge of Ophir , Southern Cross , Waitaki , St . George , Palmerston and Hercules . The Lodges of sister Constitutions present were—Kilwinning , Otago ,-St . Andrew , Clutha ; Celtic , Oamam Kilwinning ; St . John ' s , Invercargill ; Cargill , Kilwinning ; St . John ' s , N . E . Valley , Scotch Constitution ; and St . Patrick , Irish Constitution .

The visiting District and Provincial Grand Lodges were afterwards announced aud received , the Grand Officers being conducted to seat * on the da'is . At this time the hall presented a most brilliant appear , ance , the pale blue and silver clothing of the English Masons con . trusting with the varied colours worn by their Scottish brethren , having a good effect ; added to these , the rich clothing worn by the Grand Officers of the different Constitutions rendered it a scene diffi .

Mills , together with a large number of past and present Grand Officers of both Scotch aud English Constitutions -, while in the body of the hall , on either side , were ranged in their order of precedence the various Craft Lodges , special seats being reserved for tbe Board of Grand

Stewards and the Masters and Past Masters of Lodges . The musical arrangements were under the direction of Bro . J . Riedel W . M . of the Lodge of Dunedin and District Grand Organist , who was ably assisted by Bros . Marsden , Ferguson , Braid , G . Israel , A . R . Kelsey , F . Lewis , G . Pallett , M . Menderhaussen , W . Kneen , R . Greig , F . R . Smith , W . Harold , J . Horsburgh , W . Hoffland , R . Rae and Signor

New Zealand , Irish Constitntion , was then announced and received , taking the chair as Installing Officer ; and the approach

of the new District Grand Master was announced by sound of trumpet , in answer to which Bro . C . D . Longueville Graham G . D . C , proceeded to bring into Grand Lodge the patent granted by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales appointing Bro . T . Sherlock Graham District G . M . of Otago and Southland , which he handed to the Installing Officer , who directed Bro . S . James D . G . Seo . to read it . The patent having been

read , a deputation , composed of six Past Masters , with the Board of Grand Stewards , the Grand Sword Bearer , Bro . H . F . Dench and the G . Director of Ceremonies , with his Assistant , waited on the District Grand Master , preceding and attending him into the Grand Lodge , the organ playing an appropriate march , and the choir chanting the anthem , " Incline thine ear . " Bro . Pierce then addressed the D . G .

Master , and Rev . Bro . Lichtenstein District Grand Chaplain ottered a prayer appropriate fco the occasion , the choir chanting the responses . After being obligated and invested , the District Grand Master was placed on the throne , and , preceded by his Heralds , the District Grand Director of Ceremonies thrice proclaimed that Bro . Thomas Sherlock Graham had been duly installed as District Grand Master

Mason of Otago and Southland . Prior to each proclamation the Heralds made a flourish of trumpets . The brethren then paid the customary homage to the District Grand Master , and the choir chanted the ode " Lead , kindly light , amid the encircling gloom . " Bro . E . Nathan was then presented , and duly invested as Deputy District Grand Master , the Grand Director of Ceremonies , again attended by fche

Heralds , proclaiming thafc Brother as Deputy Grand Master with similar honours ; and the choir chanted " I will lift up mine eyes . " The Grand Treasurer for the ensuing year was then elected , the choice of the Grand Lodge falling on Bro . Julius Hyman P . G . S . W . P . G . T .
