EAST LANCASHIRE INSTITUTION .

A VEKx successful dramatic performance , in aid of the East Lancashire Systematic Masonic Educational and Benevolent Institution , was given at the Gentlemen ' s Concert Hall , Manchester , on Friday , 29 th ult ., by the Manchester Amateur Players . As some slight misunderstanding seems to have arisen with regard to the object of the undertaking , we may explain that Bro . A . E . Burgess S . D . Ashbury Lodge , 1459 , who is a member of the Society of Amateur Players ,

had the choice of a free performance , and at first was undecided as to whether he should offer it in aid of the Masonic Charities , or allow the proceeds to be devoted towards the endowment of a cot in connection with the Ancoats Hospital . Upon mentioning the circumstance to his Brethren of the Ashbury Lodge , they prevailed upon him to divert the proceeds to

Masonry , and were not long in taking up the matter , several of them working with most commendable zeal in the sale of tickets , so as to make the contemplated performance what it eventually became—a brilliant success . Special mention ought to be made of the supreme efforts of Bros . F . W . Burgess and Isaac Hurlow , Hon . Sees .

We have no means at present of ascertaining the amount realised , as all the tickets have not yet been accounted for , but may state that over 500 were taken at the door , and as the major portion of these were at a cost of 5 s or 2 s 6 d each , it is anticipated that a fairl y large surplus will be handed over to the East Lancashire Institution .

The play selected for representation , and which was well staged , was Bro . C H . Hawtrey ' s farcial comedy " The Private Secretary . " In matters like this , where the object is a charitable one , the theatrical critic rarely likes to indulge in fault finding , but had we been present with the avowed

intention of seeking for defects , we must have admitted that upon the present occasion there was not much to cavil at . The company worked with an ease and abandon which has only been attained by practice , and we look forward to see them before long in another selection from their repertoire of twenty pieces .

The orchestra , which is described as a talented one , had for its director Mr . A . Gray , and rendered some very fine operatic selections . Permission had been obtained for Craft clothing to be worn , and the performance was under the distinguished patronage of Bros . Col . LeGendre N . Starkie Prov . Grand Master , George Mellor Deputy , and other Piovincial Grand Officers . Amongst the latter we noticed Bros . Clifle Prov . G . Dir . of Cers ., Jas . W . Abbott P . P . G . D . C , Fred Hilton P . P . G . D . C , Walter Newton P . M . 268 1322 and W . M . 830 P . P . G . D ., and William Bee P . P . G . S .

The following Lodges were well represented : —Integrity , 163 , Fortitude , 461 , Faith , 581 , Yarborough , 633 , Alexandra , 993 , Shakespeare , 1009 , Eichmond , 1011 , Ashbury , 1459 , and Ardwick , 2185 . Bro . Grimes , of the Integrity Lodge , had offered to post all bills free of charge , but as thc Committee did not go to the expense of posters , they accordingly did not avail themselves of his kindness .
