G . S . The Lodge was opened at ti o ' clock , aud the minutes of the previous meeting read and confirmed . Tbe ballot was taken for Mr . Jacob Winter and Mr . J . C .

Hyde , and was announced favourable . Mr . Winter was subsequently initiated into Freemasonry by the W . M ., and Mr . Hyde by Bro . Bell P . M . and Seoretary . Bro . Bell also presented and explained the working tools to both candidates , and delivered the E . A . charge in a most impressive manner . Before the Lodgo was closed Bro . Gaskell P . M ., and Charity representative , read the petition to the

R . M . B . Institution on behalf of Bro . James Stafford , who had been a subscribing member of the Craft for 22 years , and who , throngh circumstances of unforeseen calamity and misfortune , has been reduced to the lowest spoke of fortune ' s wheel . Bro . Herbert Finch Prov . Grand Registrar advocated the olaim of Bro . Jas . Stafford , who was referred to in the highest terms of respect . Bro . Finch strongly

nrged the necessity of every brother present signing the petition , and of recommending every brother they knew in other Lodges to support this deserving case . Later on Bro . Herbert Finch descanted on the desirability of the brethren giving the utmost they oonld afford to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , tbe Jubilee Festival of which takes place on the 24 th inst ., at Covent

Garden Theatre . Bro . Finch very lucidly explained , at the request of the W . M ., the objeots of this Institution , its income and expenditure , and trusted most earnestly the brethren wonld supplement their already promised subscriptions , amounting to eighty odd pounds , with additional sums . He also pointed out the immense advantage every brother and Lodge would have on this special

occasion ( an occasion whioh wonld not occur again in their time ) of obtaining an increased number of votes for the money subscribed . The result of Bro . Finch's appeal was additional promises of £ 24 , making a total of £ 108 from the St . John's Lodge and its members . Bro . Finch also impressed upon the brethren the absolute necessity of attending Grand Lodge in person on the 2 nd of March , to

vote at tbe election for the Grand Treasnrership . There wonld be special trains ran to London , at convenient times , for brethren during the afternoon of Tuesday , 1 st March , particulars of whioh will shortly be advertised by the Railway Companies . The return journey would be made , at ll 30 p . m ., the following Wednesday night , and the fare 10 s for the double journey . Bro . Finch

further informed the brethren that all W . M . ' B , P . M . S and present Wardens were qualified to vote in Grand Lodge provided they had paid their subscriptions to their respective Lodges for the current year . Bro . Darbyshire P . M . 1082 , after obtaining permission from the W . M , rose to eulogise Bro . James Cookson P . P . G . Treasurer , for the admirable manner he had compiled an account of the memorial

service held in the Parish Church , Stockport , on the day of the funeral of Bro . the Dnke of Clarence . The service was attended by a large number of brethren belonging to the fire Lodges in Stockport , as well as by the public . The account which appeared in the FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE , 30 th January , had been carefully compiled by Bro . Cookson , and thinking the brethren of St . John ' s Lodge

wonld like to possess a copy of the paper he ( Bro . Darbyshire ) wonld ( with the W . M . ' s permission ) be pleased to present the hodge with 50 copies of the FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE , for distribution amongst the brethren . The W . M . graciously accepted Bro . Darbyshire ' s thoughtful gift , and proposed a vote of thanks , which was carried and acknowledged , after which the Lodge was closed in peace and harmony .

Treasurer , the sam of fifty guineas was voted out of the Lodge funds to the Royal Masonic Bonevoleut Institution . The Worshipful Master thanked the brethren moBt sincerely for so generously responding to bis appeal to subscribe amongst themselves , as much as possible , towards this deserving Institntion . He stated that the resnlt of hia appeal was promises of various amounts , the total of whioh wonld be

over a hundred guineas , and this , with the fifty guineas voted by the Lodge , would make a very respectable sum to send to London , though he felt pretty certain that before the clay of the Festival , the 24 th , he shonid be able to send altogether 200 guineas , which would certainly reflect great credit on the Lodge of Affability , and produce a double number of vote ? . There beiug no further business , the Lodge was closed in peace and harmony .

Goodior , and being announced favourable , he was initiated into Freemasonry by the W . M . Brus . Till and Lane were passed to the second degree , and

Bros . Corby and Lewis raised to the sublime degree . On the proposition of Bro . Brookes P . M ., the sum of ten guineas was voted from the funds of the Lodge towards the Royal Masonio Benevolent Institution . There being no further business , the Lodge was closed in peace and harmony .

closed in peace and harmony at 5 " 4 o . The brethren afterwards celebrated tho Festival of St . John ac a banquet , the preparing and serving of which reflected much credit ou Mr . Goodior , and being announced favourable , he was initiated into Freemasonry by the W . M . Brus . Till and Lane were passed to the second degree , and

Bros . Corby and Lewis raised to the sublime degree . On the proposition of Bro . Brookes P . M ., the sum of ten guineas was voted from the funds of the Lodge towards the Royal Masonio Benevolent Institution . There being no further business , the Lodge was closed in peace and harmony .
