BOROUGH OF GREENWICH LODGE , No . 2332 . ABOUT 120 Brethren attended this Lodge on Wednesday , 25 th ult ., at the King William IV ., East Greenwich , to assist in the installation of Bro . E . W . Higgs as W . M . After the initiation of a candidate , the installation ceremony was impressively and perfectly performed by the retiring Master Bro . J . H . Harper , the occupants of the chairs in the west and south being respectively Bros . H . Boberts and A . H . Oakley Past Masters of the Lodge . Having been installed in ancient form , the W . M ., in a manner calculated to inspire tho greatest confidence in his powers , invested his Officers .
On behalf of Bro . Sir T . W . Boord , the first W . M . of the Lodge , the W . M ., as representing the Lodge , was presented with a life size portrait of Bro . Boord , which will be hung on the walls of the Lodge room . An excellent banquet followed , and in due course the loyal toasts were honoured . Responding to that of the Grand Officers of the Order , Dr . Gooding said he would not dilate upon the virtues and qualities of those who had been honoured by the imperial purple , but it would ill become him
to sit down without saying who they were and what they did . They were the busy bees of the mother Masonic hive of the world . Like others , they had had to work np irom the lowest rungs of the Masonic ladder , and they had not been backward in opening their purse strings in the cause of Masonic charity . At the head of the Board of General Purposes was he who had just been honoured in being appointed Deputy-Chairman of a principal Criminal Court , and at the head of the Board of Benevolence there had been Bro . Robert Grey , whose successor would be Bro . James Henry Matthews .
The Grand Officers were only too glad to continue in the future the work they had done in the past . He himself was about to serve his eighth stewardship of the Masonic charities , and he was getting near the seniority of Past Grand Deacons of England , and as long as he had the energy he would continue to do his best for Brethren who might need help . Personally it had given him great pleasure to be present and see the ceremonies so efficiently performed and the Master so ably supported by his Officers . He wished prosperity to the Lodge , and hoped that he might soon be afforded the opportunity of being with them again .
The toast of the evening , that of the W . M ., was proposed by the I . P . M ., who remarked upon the fact that Bro . W . Higgs was the first initiate of the Lodge who had risen to its chair , thus marking an epoch in the Lodge ' s history . Judging from the way he had performed the investment ceremony he was sure the future of the Lodge was safe in his hands . Responding , the W . M . expressed the hope that on the expiration of his term of office he would have given satisfaction to the Brethren and shown a good year's record .
HUGH OWEN LODGE , No . 2593 . THE members of this very young Lodge—only consecrated on the 14 th February last , but already very prosperous—held their meeting on Friday , llth inst ., at the Frascati Restaurant , Oxford Street , W . In the unavoidable absence of the W . M . Bro . Rutherglen , Bro . H . G . Holland P . M . S . W . assumed command , with Bro . F . Cadman as S . W ., R . H . Nicholls J . W ., H . Roberts Secretary , J . W . HuntS . D ., H . Ramsbottom J . D ., E . A . Tull D . C , P . C . Ridgway I . G ., H . T . Willis and A . E . Lee Stewards ,
A . Campion Tyler . Bro . Holland opened the Lodge in due form , and the minutes of the last meeting were road and confirmed . Bros . T . A . March , J . A . Merchant and H . Spencer , having answered the usual questions leading from the second to tho third degree , were subsequently raised to the sublime degree of M . M . The working was perfectly rendered by the acting W . M ., while praise is also dne to the Wardens for their most able assistance .
After this the ballot was taken for Bro . Joseph Lamb , of Lodge No . 2246 , as a Joining Member , and this was unanimous in his favour . The Worshipful Master Bro . Rutherglen having arrived , apologised to the Brethren ior his absence , which was accepted . The Lodge was resumed in the second degree , and Bro . A . A . Burden was passed as a Fellow Craft . The Lodge was resumed to the first degree , and Messrs . Francis Birch , Andrew Henry Olsen , Ernest Burgess , and Rev . Francis Jones Greenwood were balloted for , approved , and duly initiated into the mysteries of ancient Freemasonry .
Bro . Rutherglen W . M . proved himself equal to the occasion , as the ceremony of initiation was most impressively given , as also was the second degree . There being no other business the Lodge was closed in perfect harmony , and the Brethren adjourned to the banqueting room , where a most sumptuous dinner was provided , of the character for which the Frascati " is so highly noted . It was served under the personal supervision of that attentive manager , Bro . Kalla .
The W . M . proposed the health of H . M . the Queen , alluding to her glorious reign during the last sixty years , and spoke of how Freemasonry had flourished in that period . After tho toajt of the Grand Master the W . M . submitted that of the Officers of Grand Lodge . He had expected to see Bro . Letchworth Grand Secretary , and His Honour Judge Philbrick Grand Registrar among them that evening , but unfortunately they could not attend . They , however , had good representative Grand Officers in Bros . Read and Aslett , and he hoped the Brethren would give a hearty response to the toast .
Bro . Read congratulated tbe W . M . as first Worshipful Master of the Hugh Owen Lodge . He sincerely thanked the W . M . and Brethren for their kind reception , both on behalf of the Grand Officers and for himself . He wished prosperity to the Lodge . Bro . W . B . Neville P . M ., in the absence of the acting I . P . M ., had much pleasure in proposing the health ol the W . M ., in eloquent terms . Thc W . M . rose and was most cordially received . He thanked the proposer of the toast and the Brethren for their kindness . He was pleased

to be W . M . of the Lodge , which he had helped to found . He did not think there was a more perfect Lodge than the Hugh Owen . Whatever he could do for its welfare he would be happy to undertake . When he was asked to be one of the Founders he was afraid to agree , on account of parliamentary and local duties , but he should be happy to attend as often as business would allow him .
The next toast was that of the Initiates , Bros . Rev . F . Jones Greenwood , Birch , Olsen and Burgess . Lodges were at all times glad to welcome such candidates as they had admitted that night . Especially might he refer to the admission of their Beverend Brother Greenwood , whose advent into the Lodge showed they were progressing , as now they might be said to possess a Chaplain , and he hoped a collar of that Office would soon be provided for him . The other initiates were equally welcome .
The Rev . Bro . Greenwood , in reply , thanked the W . M . and Brethren for their kindness . He was more used to speak in another place than at such a meeting as tho present . He thanked Bros . Spencer and Merchant for having proposed and seconded him in the Lodge , and the Brethren generally for having accepted him . Bros . Birch , Olsen , and Burgess also responded , in brief but suitable terms .
Bro . Holland S . W . proposed the health of the Joining Member Bro . Lamb , who was also well received , and acknowledged the compliment in suitable terms .
The toast of the Visitors was next given , these including Bros . George Read 65 P . G . S . B ., B . Shelswell W . M . 2384 , S . W . Larkin P . M . 742 , H . J . Barker W . M .-elect 2384 , H . T . Dudman 1929 , 0 . T . W . Drake 65 , J . Lamb 2246 , W . E . Thompson Sharpe 1642 , H . 0 . Wanton 742 , W . Tudor Howell 108 , Ernest Loder S . D . 179 , F . Freke Palmer I . G . 46 , Chas . Ortner . Bro . W . Tudor Howell , M . P ., replied , complimenting the Lodge on the excellent working he had witnessed that day . He hoped to be in their company again at no distant date . The remaining visitors also responded .
The next toast was that of the Treasurer and Secretary , to which Bro . H . Roberts responded in most suitable terms , thanking the Master and Brethren for their kindness and good wishes . He had been in hopes that Bro . Treasurer would have been present , as he could have responded to the Master ' s eloquent speech so much better than he was capable of . He might inform the Brethren that the funds were not so low as some might have expected .
The Deaeons responded to the toast of the Officers , while the Tyler concluded the proceedings in the customary manner . The harmony of the evening was well sustained , Miss Nellie Jones delighting the company with her fine voice . Others who contributed were Bros . Loder , Holland S . W ., J . G . Curtis , Frith D . C , Ortner , & c , who gave songs , while Bro . Barker favoured with a recitation .
