CHARITY IN IRELAND .

17 * 1 VEEYONE interested in benevolent enterprises , whether a \ i member of the Masouic Order or not , will , we feel

confident , read with great pleasure the report of the visit of the Belfast Masons , on Saturday , to the Dublin Masonic Schools . The occasion was most striking , and the visitors , with their lady friends numbering between four and five hundred , were a proof of the national character of these noble Institutions , representing the spirit of Charity and Brotherhood as well of North as South .

The new and popular Deputy Grand Master Dr . Meredith received the strangers warmly , and when they had examined the buildings Lord Justice Fitzgibbon delivered an address . The origin and growth of the Schools were therein described , and it is a piece of history of which Irish Masons may be proud . Its

figures we do not here repeat , but lefer all members of the Order and sympathisers with their philanthropies to a statement singularly honourable , and not excelled as evidence of earnestness and constructive wisdom in the universal record of Masonry . It has been all done , too , within a few difficult Irish years .

In 1881 the site of the schools at Ball ' s Bridge was a green field , and many remember when the late Duke of Abercorn laid the first stone . Now the premises represent an outlay of £ 24 , 700 , Of this sum £ 13 , 700 came directly out of the pockets of members of the Order . The further tale of finance told by the Lord Justice is extremely creditable . What was mentioned of results

accomplished must have astonished fche visitors , and will not fail to make new friends for the Dublin Schools in the Ulster Province . The passage in the Lord Justice ' s appeal , for such substantially it was , which will attract every Mason ' s attention , is that in which the expenditure was shown to be most moderate for the good work done . The Girls School has been followed by

the Boys School , where the capital expenditure has been £ 10 , 000 , and success is equally stamped upon everything undertaken . This , said the Lord Justice , " was no charity institution . These were not charity children ; these were the children of men that they had known and met and loved , and who had left them their children , not as objects of charity , but as objects of duty . These

schools were the noblest jewel in the Masonic regalia , but their usefulness to the members of the Order ought not be forgotten . " The proceedings , both at Ball ' s Bridge and Eichview , were very satisfactory . The Ulster brethren and friends . were delighted with their stay iu Dublin , and , no doubt , returned to their own city with a warmer feeling towards the Dublin Masons by whom these noble achievements have been perfected . —" Irish Times . " The Grand Chaplain of Freemasons " is the subject of an interview in " Church Bells" of the 28 th ult ., a pleasing photo of Dean Hole and others of Eochester Cathedral being introduced . Eeferring to his Grand Chaplaincy the Dean remarked " The

Prince of Wales honoured me by the appointment , and , busy as I am , I could not refuse . " Eeference is also made in the article to the processional cross presented by the Freemasons of Eochester ( U . S . A . ) to the Cathedral Church of Eochester , England .

Of the thousands of Brethren who will attend the special Jubilee meeting at the Albert Hall , on Monday , a very large proportion will turn their attention , as soon as the business is there completed , to the refreshment of the inner man . The

Proprietors of the Holborn Eestaurant , recognising this , have made special arrangements , just as they did on the similar occasion ten years since , to meet the demand , and no doubt

many will avail themselves of the 3 s 6 d Table d'Hote dinner there provided . The Menu for the day is given in another column , the high reputation of the establishment being such as to assure good viands and excellent service for those who may patronise it .

The annual festival of the Montague Guest Chapter , No . 1900 , was held at the Inns of Court Hotel , on Wednesday , when Comp . W . J . Dyer was installed as Z . A report of the meeting will appear next week .

The Friars Lodge of Instruction , held each week during the winter at the Plough Hotel , Mile End Eoad , has adjourned over the summer months , until the first week in October .

The Bromley St . Leonard Lodge of Instruction , No . 1805 , has also closed for the summer , the next meeting in this case being arranged for the lst September .

THE Jubilee Commemoration Jewels which may be worn by every member of a Lodge under the Grand Lodge of England on 20 th June , are being manufactured by Bros . G . Kenning and Son at various prices , so as to be within the reach of all who may thus wish to specially commemorate the sixtieth year of the reign of the Queen .
