HALF AN HOUR IN OPERATIVE MASONRY .

THK Speculative Masonry taught to Freemasons in their Lodges is of so entertaining and instructive a character tbat we imagine there are very few among those associated with the Craft but feel an interest in the practical work of the operative Mason , who—in a manner of speaking—they may regard as their companion in toil , with methods of labour so far known , to them as to awaken a fellow feeling of sympathy and concern , and the

desire for more intimate association as time or circumstance permits . It may further be urged that a careful study of the methods of the operative Mason enables one to grasp to a fuller extent the importance of the different items in the symbolic lessons presented in our Lodges , and to better appreciate the hidden meanings they are intended to convey ; but it is nofc all of -as who have the opportunity of putting this point to the test .

A few days back business led us to call on Brother Henry Harris W . M . of tho Friars Lodge , No . 1349 , and Secretary of the Israel Lodge of Instruction , and what we then learnt has induced the thoughts we have expressed above . Entering his works in Beaumont Street , Mile End , through an ordinary , if not really a meagre doorway , we were astonished to find premises at the rear that not only , cover a considerable space , but present

evidence of a largely extended and most prosperous business . On the one side we see a huge block of unworked stone—a rough ashlar of most pronounced shape ; on the other a highly finished work o £ art that is to mark the last resting place of some departed worthy—a perfect ashlar in every respect ; while around us on all sides are other monumental works in various stages of completion .

While we watched the careful and steady progress of the workmen engaged under Bro . Harris ' s direction we could tut compare the whole to the working of a Masonic Lodge , with the additional feature that the various implements around us , which were known to us symbolically as a Freemason , seemed to have additional interest imparted into them as they were actually

used by the operative Mason in his work . We could but notice the great care and persistent effort that was needed to knock off some knob or excrescence , or smooth the work for the hand of the more expert Craftsman , and wondered how many members of our Lodges acted with equal perseverance in the symbolic work of Freemasonry as is actually necessary in that of the operative Mason .

We took more interest in what was to be seen under Bro . Harris's guidance because we were so unprepared for what he had to show . We had no idea his works were so extensive , nor that the commissions entrusted to him were executed with such skill and ability , aud we can only say that if any of our readers should unfortunately require the services of a monumental

Mason , or would like to extend their knowledge of Freemasonry by half an . hour's exemplification of operative Masonry at the hands of one of its most competent exponents —and at the samo time a most enthusiastic Freemason —they cannot do better than visit Bro . Harris , at Beaumont Street , and judge for themselves if it is not possible to there gain a most useful and interesting experience .

The meetings of the Eoyal Jubilee Lodge of Instruction , No . 72 , have been adjourned until the first Wednesday in September .
