York Lodge, No. 236.

YORK LODGE , No . 236 .

THE annual meeting for the Audit of the Accounts took place on Wednesday , 2 nd inst . Lodgo was opened at 7 o'clock by the W . M ., Bro . M . Rooke , who was supported by a number of his officers and brethren . Tho Balance Sheet was presented by Bro . J . Todd P . M . P . P . G . R ., and having been examined , was pronounced to be

eminently satisfactory . After tho close of the Lodge , tho brethren met at supper , ample provision having been mado under the supervision of the Tyler , Bro . Calvert . The cloth having been removed , the W . M . proposed the usual Loyal and Masonic toasts . Bro . Alderman G . Brown then gave the toast of the R . W . Prov . G . Master , and the P . G . Lodge . Ho said that it had been his privilege on tho

last occasion of the meeting of Prov . G . Lodge in York to afford some entertainment in tho Mansion Honse , which he then had the honour to occupy , and he was sure that his opinion of their chief was that of all -who had seen him presiding in Lodge , that he used his best efforts in the cause of Masonry , and nobly succeeded . Bro . A . Buckle P . M . Past Grand Deacon , responded , and said that he was certainly

proud of the purple which had been conferred upon him , more especially as it brought him into closer association with those brethren who were standing up with him , and because he felt that in him the York Lodge had been honoured . The S . W ., Bro . J . S . Eymer , gavo the health of tbe W . M ., who had already set them , during his short term of office , so good an example , and whose health

he was so glad to see restored to him . The W . M . briefly responded , assuring tho brethren that ho should spare no pains to do his duty by the Lodge in all respects . Bro . Buckle then gave the toast of the evening , the health of the Treasurer of the Lodge . He dwelt upon Bro . Todd ' s many excellent Masonic qualities , and said that in him the successive rulers of the Lodgo had always and would always

find a friend and counsellor . Bro . Todd , in replying , made some reference to the finances , which he was glad to be able to show were in so healthy a condition . He then spoke of the Masonic Charities , and said that their Bro . the Dean of York was going up as Steward to the Benevolent Festival , and he hoped the Lodge would be able to vote a sum to his list . Ho ( Bro . Todd ) hoped to represent the Lodge at

the Girls' Festival , and trusted he would receive the support of the Lodge and brethren . He then gave a sketch of the work of the Lodge daring the past year , and showed that it had contributed a total sum to the Charities of over £ 100 . Bro . T . B . Wytehead P . M . P . P . G . D . C . gave the toast of the Past Masters of the Lodge . He said that since the time he had become a joining member of the Lodge ,

about seven years ago , there had been a succession of Masters who lad done their duty with the utmost credit to themselves and the Lodge ; and if snch conscientious workers could always be secured or the chairs of other Lodges , Masonry would be in a much better position than at present . He was entirely at one with his brother ( Bro . Todd ) on the Charities question , and was delighted at the

substantial work of the Lodge . He trusted that great care , however , would be exercised in the admission of- candidates into Masonry , for from several matters which had lately transpired , as well as from the number of applicants for the benefits of the Institutions , it was too patent that men were joining their ranks for the sake of what they and theirs could get out of Masonry . Such a condition of

affairs , if not discouraged , would prove most damaging to the W . M . Bro . W . H . Gainforth I . P . M . responded , and was followed by Bro . G . Balmford P . M . P . P . G . O ., who proposed the Officers of the Lodge . The S . W . replied , and shortly afterwards the proceedings were brought to a close . During the evening songs , duets and glees were

sung by Bros . J . Todd , G . Kirby , W . Smith , G . R . Hitchcock , J , Stead , M . Smith , and others , Bro . Tuke Org . presiding at the piano . Among those present , in addition to the brethren already named were Bros . Sir Jamea Meek P . M ., G . Garbett S . D ., W . Powell I . G . W . Nicholson , J . Young , W . T . Gowland , G . C . Lee , C . Kearsley , J Welburn and J . G . Turner .

of the first degree . Application for relief was made by a distressed brother , and the Bye-laws of the Lodge Benevolent Fund , which forbids a higher amount than half-a-guinea being given , was in this instance suspended , and the sum of two guineas was voted unanimously . Certain propositions relating to tho Bye-laws of the Benevolent Fund , which , of course , are interesting only to the

Lodge members , came under consideration . We may state , however , that a proposal for dispensing with one of the formularies peculiar to this Lodge was most ably argued at some length , and in the result , an amendment for modifying the particular formulary was accepted . Lodge having been closed , and it being an off-night , the brethren sat

down to a very quiet repast , after which the customary toasts were honoured . It was announced in connection with that of the Ini . tiates , that each of them—including those initiated at a previous meeting , there were eight in all—had presented a guinea to the Benevolent Fund , and further that the Fund amounted to between

He also heartily

congratulated tho Lodgo ou tho efficient manner in which the duties of the evening had been carried out , and the enthusiasm exhibited by all present . It is needless to say that the toast of the W . M . experienced a very hearty reception . Tho Tyler ' s toast brought the evening to a close .
