complimented Bro . Selby npon the manner ia whioh he had done his work dnring the past year , and npon his tact and judgment in managing the general affairs of the Lodge , declaring that it would be no easy task to follow suoh a Master . Bro . Parker concluded by presenting to Bro . Selby a handsome jewel , as a mark of esteem from the brethren of the Lodge . In responding to the toast , Bro . Selby

expressed hiB gratitude for the uniform courtesy and loyal support whioh had been rendered by the Offioers and Brethren , and in thanking them for the splendid jewel , reminded them that " Peaoe hath her honours no less renowned than war , " and as a medal of peace he would have eqnal pleasure in wearing it to that of the warrior whose breast was adorned by a medal for having slain , or having caused to

be slain , thousands of his follow creatures . In conclusion , he asked what better reward oonld a man have in this world than the esteem and regard of his fellow men , and having won that , what better aim in life was there than that of doing all in his power to retain it ? Supb , brethren , will be my ambition , and I assnre you that my best servioes will at all times be at the disposal of the Townley Parker

Lodge . Other toasts followed , whioh reoeived suitable responses . That of the Absent Brethren , proposd by Bro . Selby , had oonpled with it the names of Bros . Godfrey Higham and Robert Dottie . Bro . Selby made special reference to Bro . Higham , the doyen of the Lodge , who was absent through sickness , and explained that Bro . Dottie , who had

been invited , and who had promised the W . M . that he wonld attend , was unfortunately prevented from doing so by an accident whioh had happened to him dnring the recent frosty weather . While on business , at Nottingham , he had slipped and broken his leg , but he ( Bro . Selby ) sincerely hoped that both brethren would soon be restored to their nsnal health .

BARNARD LODGE , No . 1230 . ON Friday , the 3 rd inst ., Brother Thompson was installed as Worshipful Master for the ensuing year , the ceremony of installation being most impressively performed by Bro . Drnry , M . D ., Provinoial Grand Senior Warden . The newly installed Worshipfnl Master afterwards appointed and invested the following brethren as

his Officers : —Bros . Dowdeswell I . P . M ., Sevier , M . B ., S . W ., Rev . H . Jennings J . W ., Cooke Treasurer , Heslop Secretary , Walrond , M . A ., S . D ., Kyle J . D ., Douglas I . G ., Hall Director of Ceremonies , Moore Organist , Jackson and Rutherford Stewards , Welford Tyler . After the ceremony the annual banqnet was held in tbe King ' s Head Hotel , and a pleaBaut evening waa spent .

AVON LODGE , No . 1633 . THE installation of Brother W . Battersby Senior Warden Worshipful Master eleot , and Festival of St . John in connection with the above Lodge , was held at the Wheat Sheaf , High Street , Manchester , on Wednesday , the 25 th ult . The Lodge was opened at 3 p . m . by Bro . J . T . Kenworthy W . M ., there being about 60 members and visitors present , which company inoluded several influential brethren , amoagst others being Bros . John Chadwick Provinoial

Grand Seoretary East Lancashire , J . W . Abbott P . P . G . D . C , Alderman J . Roberts P . P . G . D . C , J . Newton P . G . Assistant Seoretary East Lancashire Systematic Masonic Educational and Benevolent Institution . The Mnyor of Manchester ( Brother Alderman Anthony Marshall ) wrote expressing regret at his inability to be present , aud several letters and telegrams of a similar imi > rt were also read .

The minutes of the last regular meeting having been read and confirmed , Mr . Petty , a candidate for Freemasonry , was admitted after approval , and duly initiated , the ceremony being performed by the Worshipful Master . A noteworthy feature of the Lodge business was an unanimous vote of fifteen guineas to the East Lancashire Systematic and Benevolent Institution . We may here mention that

the Avon Ledge has disbursed a sum of nearly £ 100 in charity during the past year , which fact was shown by the balance sheets distributed amongst the members . The Lodge having been advanced , the nsual ancient and constitutional questions were addressed to the Worshipful Master elect , after which tbe Lodge was opened in the third degree . All below the rank of a Worshipfnl Master having retired ,

a Board of Installed Master was formed , and the ceremony of installation proceeded with . Brother Battersby having been duly installed in the chair of K . S ., the brethren were re-admitted , and Brother Kenworthy Installing Master made tbe nsnal declaration , accompanied by Masonio honours . Brother T . B . Cavanah P . M . delivered the oharge to the Master , and Bro . W . F . Farrington P . M .

presented the working tools . Bro . C . Swinn P . M . next invested the following Offioers , viz .: —Bros . J . T . Kenworthy I . P . M ,, J . J . Wills S . W ., A . Jaoobson J . W ., W . Craven P . After tbe Installing Master had invested Brother Swinn with the Secretary ' s collar , the brethren proceeded to elect a Charity Representative , the unanimous choice falling upon Brother G . Macfarlane P . M ., who was i . lso duly invested . The Lodge was then closed in the nsnal form , after which the brethren retired to partake of a very excellent banquet . The table was most tastefully decorated , and the dinner well and carefully served , Bro . Tom Wood

P . M . fnlly maintaining his reputation as a caterer hors ligne . The nsual Loyal and Masonic toaBts were proposed and honoured , the Provinoial Officers being called upon to respond on their own behalf . A select programme had been provided , Brother Phil Herman , one ot the rising actors of the day , furnishing additionally a spirited rendering of his most popular Dutch songs , which entertainment was a genuine treat to all present .

ALBERT VICTOR LODGE , No . 1773 . THE regular meeting of this Lodge was held at the Town HaU , Pendleton , on Friday , 20 th nit ., Brother Thomas Threlfall

Worshipfnl Master . There were also present Brothers J . L . Smith I . P . M ., Thomas T . Sefton S . W ., William Mosley J . W ., R . H . Berry Treasurer , J . Clarkson S . D ., William Lambert I . G ., Thomas Bleaie and William Allan Smith Stewards ; P . M . ' B Thomas Kay , E . Hoi . land , F . Townson , E . Roberts ( FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE ) , Richard Hilton , J . Handley , William Woodeson , and W . Bransby . At the

festive board which followed , and after the usual loyal toasts had been disposed of , Bro . Holland Past Master proposed that of the Wor . Master , and payed him a flattering compliment , by saying that no better officer was connected with any Institution ,, and that Brother Threlfall was quite equal in ability to any of his predecessors in the Albert Victor Lodge . Bro . Threlfnll , in reply , said that if they

might judge by their last three meetings , over whioh he had presided as Worshipfnl Master , they had a good angrury of success , and they anticipated another initiation . Brother Willitm Mosley J . W . pro . posed tbe tcast of the Past Masters of the Lodge , Buying that he conld not adequately do justice to such a toast . It was a proud boast to make that they were so well off in this respect , and bad suoh

an array of brethren who had reached and vacated the chair of K . S . He hoped the Past Masters would be continual visitors to tbe Lodge , so that they might help and guide by their advice . Brother Thomas Kay , in responding on behalf of the Past Masters , said that he felt proud indeed to be numbered as one of that be ly . Ia

reverting to the absentees he stated that they had very substantial reasons for being away , and nnder all cironmstanoes were ready and willing to do anything for the good of the Lodge . SOUTHDOWN LODGE , No . 1797 . THE annual installation and banqnet was held at the New Inn , HirBtpierpoint , on Wednesday , thn 1 st inst . Brother Abell W . M . opened the Lodge , assisted by his Officers . The ceremony of installation was performed by the retiring W . M . Bro . Abell , assisted by Bros . Rawlinson and Pearce , and was impressively carried out . At its close the newly installed W . M ., Brother Bcckwell , on behalf of the Lodge , presented the retiring W . M . with a Past Master's

jewel . The Offioers invested were—Bros . Abell I . P . M ., Wiokbam S . W ., Clarke J . W ., Hollands Treasurer , Broad Secretary , Beeney S . D ., Alwen J . D ., Fieldwiok Direotor of Ceremonies , Golding I . G ., Bailey Steward , and Howell Tyler . Before closing the Lodge , Bro . Abell presented a silver snuff-box , as a memento of his year of offioe , a gift for which the brethren most heartily and cordially thanked

him . The business in Lodge completed , the brethren sat down to a sumptuous banqnet , when the nsnal Masonio toasts were duly honoured . Responding for Grand Lodge , Brother Burridge paid a high compliment to the brethren who carried ont the installation ceremonies . With the Provincial Grand Officers tbe Worshipful Master coupled tbe names of Bios . Willnrd , Rawlinson , and Musson .

Bros . Willard and Rawlinson soitably responded . The Immediate Past Master proposed the health of Brother Buckwell W . M . of the Lodge . He congratulated him on his advancement , and described him as an ardent Mason . The brethren all knew how capable Bro . Buckwell was to carry out the ceremonies , and he wished him God . speed in his year of office . Iu responding , Bro . Buckwell expressed his pleasure at the attainment of that high offioe in tbe Lodge of his

initiation . It should , be submitted , be the ambition of every Mason to attain to the chair . The Southdown Lodge was oertainly one of tbe happiest Lodges in the Province , and he should do his utmost to oarry out the duties zealously , faithfully , and impartially . With the Visitors Bro . Buckwell coupled the names of Bro . Bennett , of Brunswick , Bro . Ward , of London , and Bro . Mahomot Khau , of the Punjanb , who severally responded . Many brethren , by reciting and singing , enhanced the pleasantness of the evening .

DUKE OP CONNAUGHT LODGE , No . 1834 . TUESDAY , tbe 24 th ult ., was a " red-letter day " in the annals of this Lodgp , tho Provincial Grand MasW of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight , Bro . W . W . B . Beach , M . P ., having aocoptod an invitation to attend the installation of Brother Alexander Howell aa Worshipful Master of tbe Lodge for the ensuing year . The Prov . Grand Master and the Provincial Officers Present and Past entered

the Lodge ( Freemasons' Hall , Commercial Road , Portsmouth ) in procession , and were received with the oustomary honours , after which tbe ceremony of installation was impressively performed by the Provinoial Grand Master , to whom a hearty vote of thanks was accorded . Tbe Worshipful Master appointed his Officers , as nnder : —

Divers appropriate poetical and other quotations were introdnced on the meuu , and their seleotiou must have entai ' ed no small nmonnt of labour upon tbe Worshipful Master . The usual introductory toasts were given from the chair , and the Depnty Provinoial Grand Ma-tier Brother J . E . Le Fenvre ,

in responding for the Pro Gr . md Master , the Dvpnty Grand Master , and the Present and Past Officers of Grand Lodge , adverted to the functions of Grand Lodge , and advised brethren who weie qualified to exercise tbe privilege of attending . He also alluded to the very large sums—closely approaching £ 100 , 000—whioh had been raised for Maaonio Charities during the past twelve months , remarking that

DUKE OP CONNAUGHT LODGE , No . 1834 . TUESDAY , tbe 24 th ult ., was a " red-letter day " in the annals of this Lodgp , tho Provincial Grand MasW of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight , Bro . W . W . B . Beach , M . P ., having aocoptod an invitation to attend the installation of Brother Alexander Howell aa Worshipful Master of tbe Lodge for the ensuing year . The Prov . Grand Master and the Provincial Officers Present and Past entered

the Lodge ( Freemasons' Hall , Commercial Road , Portsmouth ) in procession , and were received with the oustomary honours , after which tbe ceremony of installation was impressively performed by the Provinoial Grand Master , to whom a hearty vote of thanks was accorded . Tbe Worshipful Master appointed his Officers , as nnder : —

presided at the banquet which followed , which did great credit to the cuisine of the Freemasons' Club . Divers appropriate poetical and other quotations were introdnced on the meuu , and their seleotiou must have entai ' ed no small nmonnt of labour upon tbe Worshipful Master . The usual introductory toasts were given from the chair , and the Depnty Provinoial Grand Ma-tier Brother J . E . Le Fenvre ,

in responding for the Pro Gr . md Master , the Dvpnty Grand Master , and the Present and Past Officers of Grand Lodge , adverted to the functions of Grand Lodge , and advised brethren who weie qualified to exercise tbe privilege of attending . He also alluded to the very large sums—closely approaching £ 100 , 000—whioh had been raised for Maaonio Charities during the past twelve months , remarking that
