Allen worked the first and second lectures , assisted by the brethren . Bro . R . Olley was elected W . M . for the ensuing week . All Masonic business being ended , Lodge was closed in due form and adjourned .

Ivy Lodge No . 1441 . —Among tho items brought forward at the last meeting of this Lodge , a leport of which appeared in our last issue , was tho following communication which had been addressed to the Worshipful Master of tho Lodge : — " 152 Stamford Street , 15 th March 18 S 0 .

"Dear Sir and Brother—I havo much pleasure in forwarding herewith a cheque for the amount of subscription due on tho 23 rd inst . As the Lodge is now firmly established , and as my further support is no longer considered to bo necessary , I shall be glad if you will

The ceremony of oxaltatiou was rehearsed , Comp . Hubbard acting as candidate . The arrangements for tho anniversary dinner were then considered , and it was decided to hold it on tho 15 th April at the rooms as above . The S . E . announced that Comp . L . A . Leins M . E . Z . of the mother Chapter had kindly consented to preside on the occasion . Chapter was then duly closed .

The Report of the Committee of tho Second Tottenham , Enfield , and Edmonton Masonio Charitable Association is before us ; from it wo gather that a sum of £ 371 0 s 6 d had boon already subscribed , out of which thirty-one appropriations have boon made

to tho three Charities . Undoubtedly this Association may bo congratulated upon its general success . Any of our readers who may desire it can obtain further information of Bro . James Garrod l . G . 754 , Holly Cottage , Bruce Grove , Tottenham , N ., who is tho Honorary Secretary .

It is generally tho case where a Mason wears a profusion of Masonic emblems to attract public attention and advertise himself , his Masonio education has been sorely neglected , and in many instances ho cannot explain tho meaning of the jewel ho wears , and it is doubtful if he could work hia way into a Lodge of Entered Apprentices with credit to himself or tho Lodgo ho hails from .

TIIK ELECTRIC LIGHT . —Tho Telegraphic Journal of 1 st April contains a description of a new form of lamp for the eloctric light , whioh has recently been invented by Bro . Charles Stewart , M . A . It consists of a number of square carbon rods placed radially upon a diso of wood or metal in such a manner that tho inner ends of tho carbon rods form a completo circle . Thero is a circular opening in tho

wooden disc through which tho electric light is seen from underneath , Tho carbons which aro all forced towards tho centre by a uniform pressnro move forward as they are consumed , and together form tho positive electrodo of the lamp . Tho negative electrode consists of a covered hemispherical cup of copper which before tho current enters tho lamp rests upon the ring formed by the carbons . On

the current entering tho lamp an electro-magnet raises tho motal electrodo and the electric arc is then formed between tho cirole of carbons and the motal electrode . There is a flow of water through the latter to keep it cool . Tho advantages which this lamp possesses are : —1 It is automatic in its action ; 2 Id is capable of burnin "

for a very considerable period ; 3 It does not throw any shadows ; 4 It is of simple and comparatively inexpensive construction ; 5 The intensity of tho light may bo incroasod if so desired . This is tho second lamp for the electric light which Bro . Stewart has recently invented .

Accordiug to tho New York World , five Chinamen have lately applied to the Supreme Court of New York for tho incorporation of a society styled the " Long We Tong Eng Wi . " which , being interpreted , is stated to signify , " The Order and Brotherhood of Masons . " They say they aro good Masons , and that Masonry has existed among their Masonic ancestors in China for over a thousand years , and they can prove it .

ABOUT VISITING ENGLISH LODGES .

DEAK BKOTnER , —The caution which I felt it my duty to utter in regard to visiting Masonic Lodges in London , and which you did me tho honour to publish in the December number of tho Review , was based upon the following experience .

W hen about to go abroad in 1878 , I received a letter from Bro . Wheeler , of the Masonic Jewel , Memphis , earnestly requesting me to continue my contributions to the Jewel , in tho form of Foreign Correspondence , and especially charging me to visit a Lodgo or Lodges in London , and give him my views of English Freemasonry . I went abroad in time to join Alleghany Commandery at Lucerne , Switzerland ,

and continued with them through Italy and back to Paris . On Tuesday , the first day of October , I found myself in London , and having 6 een in the London Freemason that quite a number of Lodges would meet during the afternoon and evening , I presented myself at Freemasons' Hall , at abont 5 o ' clock p . m . Tho Tyler informed me frankly that it was uncertain as to my being

able to visit any of the Lodges . I notified him that my papers wero all complete , and that I was ready to stand any test or examination that was legitimate . I will not be positive , but I think that I applied to five out of seven Lodges , then in session , with tho same result , that unless I brought some ono from the city , to vouch for mo to tho Tyler , I could not bo admitted . I returned to my Hotel , tho Bedford , No .

95 Southampton Row , qnito near to the Hall , and after tea , referring to tho Freemason again , I found that Grosvcnor Lodgo was yet to meet . The Tyler brought back the samo response as in tho former application . Feeling doubly chagrined , less however at my personal position , than at tho surrender of my life-long views of the universality

of Masonry , I sent tho Tyler baok and reqnested an interview with tho Master , which was kindly granted . I " was conducted up stairs and presented , at tho door of what I took to be an ante-room , with a . half dozen or more gentlemen , clothed as Mawons in the room . Tho Muster inquired why I had desired an interview with him , and I
