AMHERST LODGE No . 1223 . THE Installation meeting of thia Lodge was held at tho King ' a Arms Hotel , Westerham , on Saturday last , 3 rd inst ., Present : — Bros . W . C . Banks W . M ., C . J . Dodd S . W ., John Webb J . W ., E . Dnrtnell Treasurer , S . Smith S . D ., T . J . Baker J . D ., A . S . Owen I . G ., H . L . Hall W . S ., A . W . Duret P . M ., E . J . Dodd P . M ., C . E . The Lodgo was opened at 4 p . m . in due form and with solemn prayer . Owing to indisposition Bro . J . H . Jewell P . M . P . P . G . O ., the Secretary , was unable to bo present , and Bro . P . M . Dodd acting in his absence , proceeded to read the minutes of the previous meeting , which

were unanimously confirmed . Several communications from brethren unable to he present were then read . After the adoption of the report of tho Audit Committee the W . M . rose and alluded with feelings of deep emotion to the sad loss the brethren had sustained since they last met by the death of the father of their Lodge Bro . P . M . Newsome and of their much respected Bro . P . M . Mortlock , and tho Secretary

was requested to write letters of condolence to tho widows of these departed brothers . Tho Lodge was then opened in the second degree and the W . M . elect , Bro . Charles John Dodd , presented for the benefit of installation ; he having assented to the usual requirements , and that portion of the ceremony concluded , the Lodge was opened in the third degree . All brethren below the rank of Installed Master then retired ,

a Board of Installed Masters was formed , and Bro . Dodd placed with the usual ceremony in the Chair of K . S . He was then proclaimed , saluted , and greeted , and having invested the Installing Master Bro . W . C . Banks as I . P . M ., the Board was closed , and tho brethren readmitted . The new W . M . was then proclaimed , sainted , and greeted in the three degrees . The following Officers were invested for the

ensuing year : Bros . J . Webb S . W ., S . Smith J . W ., E . Durtnell Treasurer , J . W . Jewell P . M . P . P . G . O . Secretary , T . J . Baker S . D ., A . S . Owen J . D ., H . L . Hall I . G ., E . H . Gauntlet W . S ., and E . C . Birch D . C . The Tyler was re-elected . The Ancient Charges were then delivered to the W . M ., Wardens , and Brethren , and the working tools in each degree fully explained . The Installing Master Bro . W . C . Banks

was justly praised by the brethren for the careful , able , and impressive manner in which he rendered the beautiful ceremony of Installation . Bro . P . M . Dodd was re-elected a member of the Charity Committee , somo other business was transacted , and the Lodge dnly closed . At the banqnet which sncceeded the usual loyal and other toasts were duly honoured . During the evening the W . M . presented to Bro .

W . C . Banks I . P . M . a handsome Past Master ' s jewel , voted to him by the brethren of the Lodge , on which was engraved an inscription etating that it was presented to Bro . Banks in recognition of the great services he had rendered to tho Amherst Lodge during tho past year . The W . M . said he quite agreed with the wording of that inscription ,

and speaking in high praise of Bro . Banks conduct of the affairs of the Lodge during his year of office as W . M ., sincerely hoped he wonld live long to wear that jewel ; he further alluded to the able manner in which the Installation ceremony had been given that evening . The Tyler ' s toast having been drnnk , the brethren dispersed , most of them driving to Sevenoaks and thence by train to London .

Metropolitan Lodge of the Order of St . Lawrence . —A meeting was held on Thnrsday , 1 st April , at 2 Ked Lion-square . Present—Bros . C . F . Matier as W . M ., S . C . Dibdin S . W ., Samuel Eawson J . W ., S . B . Wilson Treas ., D . M . Dewar Sec , Robert Roy l . G . ; Past Masters Bros . Fred . Binckes and S . Eosenthal ; and Bros . Cubitt , Cooper , Constable , EobiDS , Soppet , Davison , Anderson ,

Gimingham , Venn , Dicketts , & c . Visitor—M . W . Bro . Eev . G . E . Portal P . G . M . G . L . M . M . M . After the minutes were read and confirmed , Bros . John E . Shearer , William M . Bywater , Eev . Ambrose W . Hall , Joseph J . Pope , Wm . Stephens and Fred Badkin were unanimously elected and admitted as members of the Venerable Order . After the Lodge was closed the brethren partook of a " grill" at the Holborn Eestanrant .

Joppa Lodge , No . 188 . —The regular meeting of this Lodge was held on Monday , tho 5 th inst ., at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgate-street , E . C . Bros . M . Hymans W . M ., E . Baker S . W ., L . M . Myers J . W ., E . P . Albert P . G . P . Sec , J . S . Lyon Treasurer , J . Benjamin S . D ., N . Baum I . G ., Dodson P . M . D . C , A . Botibol Steward ; P . M . 's Bros . S . Hickman , L . Lazarus , H . M . Levy , A . G .

Dodson ; Bros . Bean , Botibol , Grove Ellis , Gardiner , Wall , Haines , & c . The Lodgo was opened , and minutes were confirmed . Bro . Wall was raised to the third degree , perfectly and impressively by tho W . M . A ballot was taken for tho admission of Mr . Justus Strokirk , which was unanimously in the candidate ' s favour ; he was duly initiated into tho Order ( by courtesy of the W . M . ) by Bro . H . M . Levy P . M . Three distressed brethren wero relieved from tho funds of the

Lodge . A letter was received from Bro . M . Spiegel I . P . M ., stating he had received the jewel voted by the Lodge , for which he returned sincere thanks ; he hoped on his return to this country personally to thank tho brethren . Bro . H . M . Levy P . M . proposed , and Bro . J . S . Lyon seconded , that in future tho fee be £ 5 5 s for brethren who havo been initiated in the Lodge . Votes of thanks wero

recorded on tho minutes to Bros . H . M . Levy P . M . and L . Alexander P . M . for their services on this and other occasions , and for the interest they had always shown in matters connected with the Lodge . This was carried nnanimonsly . The Lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to light refreshments . Tho W . M . proposed the toasts , Loyal and Masonic , in

a very eloquent manner . Bro . C . P . Albert P . G . P . responded for the Grand Officers . The toast of the Joppa Benevolent Fund was responded to by Bro . L . Alexander President ; he dwelt on the merits of this excellent Fund , the balance of which amounts to over £ 1100 , although large amounts had been given to many deserving cases , nearly £ 500 in the last two years . Tho W . M . then proposed

tho toast of the newly-initiated Bro . Strokirk ; he was sure by the attention he paid to the ceremony he wonld become a credit to the Order ; indeed , he had carried out his first lesson in charity by contributing 10 s 6 d to the Benevolent Fund . The members were all proud to see Bro . Strokirk among them . After this compliment had been acknowledged , Bro . L . Alexander P . M . proposed the health of

the W . M . ; they were all aware that Bro . Hymans possessed all the qualifications necessary for the Master ' s chair ; thoy had witnessed his working ; the ceremony of raising was performed in a masterly manner , and he well deserved every encomium passed on him—no ono in that chair had excelled him , and . he hoped they would drink the toast and wish Bro . Hymans health , long life , and

prosperity . The AV . M . could hardly find words to express his thanks to Bro . Alexander and the brethren for the way they had responded to the toast . When ho undertook the duties of the Lodge he hoped it would bo to their satisfaction ; he trusted to havo the same amount of approbation bestowed on him when he left tho chair . The W . M . then proposed the toaBt of the Visitors . Bros .

I . P . Cohen P . M . 205 , W . H . IStiles P . M . 1732 , and Fletcher 180 , severally responded ; each paid deserved compliments for tho ablo manner in which the W . M . had performed the duties of the chair . The toast of the Past Masters was then given , and Bro . L . Alexander responded . Tho W . M . next proposed the toast of the Wardens , and complimented them on their excellent working ; he was sure they were both qualified to occupy the chair . Bros . E . Baker S . W . and

L . M . Myers J . W . responded ; then the toast of the Treasurer and Secretary was given , to which Bros . E . P . Albert and J . S . Lyon replied . The toast of the Junior Officers followed , and the Tyler ' s closed the proceedings . Altogether a very agreeable evening was passed , Bros . W ., G . L . Walker Preceptor , Anderson S . D ., Fells J . D ., Styles l . G . The Lodge opened in duo form . The minutes of previous meeting wero read and confirmed . The ceremony of initiation was worked with

precision and care by Bro . P . M . T . J . Maidwell , Bro . Dalton candidate . The Lodge was opened in the second and third degrees , and closed , when tho following propositions were passed , viz . —That one guinea be voted to the Girls ' , on Bro . P . M . Maidwell ' s list . That Bro . Smith S . W . be the W . M . for Wednesday next . That the Fifteen

Sections be worked on 28 th instant in this Lodge of Instruction . That Bro . T . B . Biddle be the Treasurer of the Lodge of Instruction , and that Bros . Dalton and Styles , 1364 and 1426 , respectively , be elected members . Votes of thanks were recorded to the Treasurer and Secretary , for which latter post Bro . J . K . Pitt was re-elected for ensuing year . Tho Lodge was closed in due form .

Boyal Alfred Lodge of Instruction , No . 780 . —The weekly meetings were resumed at tho Star and Garter Hotel , Kew Bridge , on Friday , 2 nd April , after the Easter recees . This being the meeting immediately preceding the assembling of the mother Lodge ( which had to be postponed from Good Friday ) the W . M . Bro . Gomm and his Wardens and Officers took their places . There were

member . Letters of condolence wero ordered to be written to Bro . Eoe P . M . and Preceptor , on a domestic bereavement , and to Mrs . Snook , widow of our recently deceased Bro . Snook , late of Acton , who passed away deeply regretted , after many years spent in actively ameliorating the sufferings of those whom fortune had less favoured . Joppa Lodge , No . 188 . —The regular meeting of this Lodge was held on Monday , tho 5 th inst ., at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgate-street , E . C . Bros . M . Hymans W . M ., E . Baker S . W ., L . M . Myers J . W ., E . P . Albert P . G . P . Sec , J . S . Lyon Treasurer , J . Benjamin S . D ., N . Baum I . G ., Dodson P . M . D . C , A . Botibol Steward ; P . M . 's Bros . S . Hickman , L . Lazarus , H . M . Levy , A . G .

Dodson ; Bros . Bean , Botibol , Grove Ellis , Gardiner , Wall , Haines , & c . The Lodgo was opened , and minutes were confirmed . Bro . Wall was raised to the third degree , perfectly and impressively by tho W . M . A ballot was taken for tho admission of Mr . Justus Strokirk , which was unanimously in the candidate ' s favour ; he was duly initiated into tho Order ( by courtesy of the W . M . ) by Bro . H . M . Levy P . M . Three distressed brethren wero relieved from tho funds of the

Lodge . A letter was received from Bro . M . Spiegel I . P . M ., stating he had received the jewel voted by the Lodge , for which he returned sincere thanks ; he hoped on his return to this country personally to thank tho brethren . Bro . H . M . Levy P . M . proposed , and Bro . J . S . Lyon seconded , that in future tho fee be £ 5 5 s for brethren who havo been initiated in the Lodge . Votes of thanks wero

recorded on tho minutes to Bros . H . M . Levy P . M . and L . Alexander P . M . for their services on this and other occasions , and for the interest they had always shown in matters connected with the Lodge . This was carried nnanimonsly . The Lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to light refreshments . Tho W . M . proposed the toasts , Loyal and Masonic , in

a very eloquent manner . Bro . C . P . Albert P . G . P . responded for the Grand Officers . The toast of the Joppa Benevolent Fund was responded to by Bro . L . Alexander President ; he dwelt on the merits of this excellent Fund , the balance of which amounts to over £ 1100 , although large amounts had been given to many deserving cases , nearly £ 500 in the last two years . Tho W . M . then proposed

tho toast of the newly-initiated Bro . Strokirk ; he was sure by the attention he paid to the ceremony he wonld become a credit to the Order ; indeed , he had carried out his first lesson in charity by contributing 10 s 6 d to the Benevolent Fund . The members were all proud to see Bro . Strokirk among them . After this compliment had been acknowledged , Bro . L . Alexander P . M . proposed the health of

the W . M . ; they were all aware that Bro . Hymans possessed all the qualifications necessary for the Master ' s chair ; thoy had witnessed his working ; the ceremony of raising was performed in a masterly manner , and he well deserved every encomium passed on him—no ono in that chair had excelled him , and . he hoped they would drink the toast and wish Bro . Hymans health , long life , and

prosperity . The AV . M . could hardly find words to express his thanks to Bro . Alexander and the brethren for the way they had responded to the toast . When ho undertook the duties of the Lodge he hoped it would bo to their satisfaction ; he trusted to havo the same amount of approbation bestowed on him when he left tho chair . The W . M . then proposed the toaBt of the Visitors . Bros .

I . P . Cohen P . M . 205 , W . H . IStiles P . M . 1732 , and Fletcher 180 , severally responded ; each paid deserved compliments for tho ablo manner in which the W . M . had performed the duties of the chair . The toast of the Past Masters was then given , and Bro . L . Alexander responded . Tho W . M . next proposed the toast of the Wardens , and complimented them on their excellent working ; he was sure they were both qualified to occupy the chair . Bros . E . Baker S . W . and

L . M . Myers J . W . responded ; then the toast of the Treasurer and Secretary was given , to which Bros . E . P . Albert and J . S . Lyon replied . The toast of the Junior Officers followed , and the Tyler ' s closed the proceedings . Altogether a very agreeable evening was passed , Bros . Confidence Lodge of Instruction , Mo . 198 . —On Wednesday , 7 th April , at the Railway Tavern , Fenchurch-street , City . Bros . T . J . Maidwell W . M ., A . W . Smith S . W ., T . B . Biddlo J . W ., G . L . Walker Preceptor , Anderson S . D ., Fells J . D ., Styles l . G . The Lodge opened in duo form . The minutes of previous meeting wero read and confirmed . The ceremony of initiation was worked with

precision and care by Bro . P . M . T . J . Maidwell , Bro . Dalton candidate . The Lodge was opened in the second and third degrees , and closed , when tho following propositions were passed , viz . —That one guinea be voted to the Girls ' , on Bro . P . M . Maidwell ' s list . That Bro . Smith S . W . be the W . M . for Wednesday next . That the Fifteen

Sections be worked on 28 th instant in this Lodge of Instruction . That Bro . T . B . Biddle be the Treasurer of the Lodge of Instruction , and that Bros . Dalton and Styles , 1364 and 1426 , respectively , be elected members . Votes of thanks were recorded to the Treasurer and Secretary , for which latter post Bro . J . K . Pitt was re-elected for ensuing year . Tho Lodge was closed in due form .

Boyal Alfred Lodge of Instruction , No . 780 . —The weekly meetings were resumed at tho Star and Garter Hotel , Kew Bridge , on Friday , 2 nd April , after the Easter recees . This being the meeting immediately preceding the assembling of the mother Lodge ( which had to be postponed from Good Friday ) the W . M . Bro . Gomm and his Wardens and Officers took their places . There were

also presont Bros . Gardiner P . M ., Goss P . M ., Andrews P . M ., Maton , Bellerby , Brill , Smith 1395 , & o . Lodge was opened and the confirming of the minutes postponed till next meeting , the Hon . Sec . having excused himself ou the ground that his " civil duties" required his presence elsewhere . Bro . Maton answered questions leading to second degree . Bro . E . Smith 1395 was admitted a

member . Letters of condolence wero ordered to be written to Bro . Eoe P . M . and Preceptor , on a domestic bereavement , and to Mrs . Snook , widow of our recently deceased Bro . Snook , late of Acton , who passed away deeply regretted , after many years spent in actively ameliorating the sufferings of those whom fortune had less favoured . He was founder of , and leading spirit in , the " Acton
