The Earl of Carnarvon on Tuesday night delivered an address at Edinburgh , on Imperial Administration , in -which he contrasted the present amicable relations between the Colouies and the Home Government with the dislike formerly entertained by the former towards " Downingstruet . "

The present candidates for the office of Rector of Aberdeen University are Mr . Cross , the Home Secretary , and Lord Rosebeiy , the Earl of Aberdeen having -withdrawn . The deaths havo been announced of the Dowager

A match at football was p layed at Kennington Oval on Monday night by the electric lig ht . The experiment was , on the whole , successful , but improvements in some of the details were desirable . A fire broke out at Maynooth College on Friday last , and

house in Ireland . A man of independent means , living at Uttoxeter , murdered his wife and then committed suicide . A boatman , named Mumford , at Dover , on Tuesday , killed his wife and child by stabbing them with a dagger .

A man named Charles Peace , who is awaiting his trial in London for burglary at Blackheath , has been identified as the murderer of a Mr . Dixon , near Sheffield , two

years ago . One of the directors of the City of Glasgow Bank , Mr . Stewart , has been released upon sureties to the extent of ; 615 , 000 . The other directors in custody have applied to

be released , but have not yet offered sufficient sureties . A public meeting was held in Glasgow on Monday , when a subscription was opened for the relief of the shareholders in the City Bank , and upwards of £ 55 , 000 was at once subscribed . That amount has since been increased to

nearly £ 80 , 000 . Subscriptions have also been opened in Edinburgh , Dundee , and other Scottish towns . The Viceroy ' s second letter to the Ameer Shere Ali was
