ENTERTAINMENT NOTES .

Garnck . —Although "La Perichole" cannot be considered one of the best of Offenbach ' s hundred and odd comic operas , still that talented master never composed anything that was not bright and effervescing like the foam of his native champagne , and it was a happy thought of Bro . H . T . Brickwell to revive the opera , if only to show tho present generation the difference between a strictly opera comique and the more modern musical comedy .

The plot of " La Perichole " naturally loses some of its liveliness by translation to the English stage , hut enough is left to make a very agreeable entertainment , while the delightful strains of the purely Offenbachian music tickle the ear with delicious sensations . No one is better fitted for the role of the heroine than Miss Florence St . John , who enters into the spirit of the part with much verve and no little pathos . Mr . Richard Clarke admirably sings

the songs allotted to the jealous Piquillo , and Mr . John Le Hay is altogether excellent as the amorous Don Andres . There is not much of the Spanish dignity about Mr . Fred Kaye , whose performance of the wily Don Pedro causes roars of laughter ; and Messrs . W . Howard and A . G . Poulton , together with Miss Emmie Owen and several other charming ladies ,

materially contribute to the general effect . The opera is splendidly staged , both the sceuery and costumes being thoroughly appropriate , while the excellent orchestra conducted by Mr . Ernest Ford is as perfect as possible . The crowded state of the theatre sufficiently demonstrates that the piece has caught on , though Bro . Brickwell ' s prospective arrangements must soon curtail the run of the opera .

Parkhurst . —Mr . Edward Lockwood ' s clever company in that most charming musical production of modern time , " La Poupee , " by Ordonneau and Sturgess , music by Audran , appears afc this Theatre next week . " La Poupee" contains every element necessary to a complete success ^ in a

high degree of perfection—bright , tuneiul music , racy dialogue , magnificent dresses , lovely scenery , and , above all , a novel , ingenious and interesting plofc . Madame Adelina Patbi expresses her very favourable opinion in the following letter : — London , 10 th September 1897 .

Our Lodge ceremonial work so readily lends itself to division and sub-division , says " The Mallet , " ia " Glasgow Evening News , " that it is matter for surprise that so few take advantage of this means of creating au increased interest in the conferring of the various degrees . The monotony in which degree ceremonies are frequently performed makes it a tiring

ordeal to listen to the same voice droning in the ear through a sitting of three-quarters of aa hour . We cannot ail be elocutionary experts , but Worshipful Masters , by a little exercise , can create an interest among die Officers in the Lodge over which they preside , and get them to take their own part in the ceremony , and not only relieve themselves of vocal effort , but

give au additional attraction to the work of the Lodge . At the second degree ceremony in the St . Mungo Lodge , JNO . 27 , last Thursday , the W . M . iiro . Eoberc Speirs was complimented by Past Masters who were present in allowing the other Officers to take their respective parts , The offices in many of the Lodges in Glasgow will suffer change daring the next three months , and

to those who are new to the chair 1 would appeal , in the interest of their respective Lodges , to divide the ceremonial work among the other Officers as much ^ as possible . Give every Officer his part , and let every Officer perfect himself in ic . With everyone ' s interest ) aroused there will be no more work slovenly done , no more dull Lodges during ceremonies .

ENTERTAINMENT NOTES .

Garnck . —Although "La Perichole" cannot be considered one of the best of Offenbach ' s hundred and odd comic operas , still that talented master never composed anything that was not bright and effervescing like the foam of his native champagne , and it was a happy thought of Bro . H . T . Brickwell to revive the opera , if only to show tho present generation the difference between a strictly opera comique and the more modern musical comedy .

The plot of " La Perichole " naturally loses some of its liveliness by translation to the English stage , hut enough is left to make a very agreeable entertainment , while the delightful strains of the purely Offenbachian music tickle the ear with delicious sensations . No one is better fitted for the role of the heroine than Miss Florence St . John , who enters into the spirit of the part with much verve and no little pathos . Mr . Richard Clarke admirably sings

the songs allotted to the jealous Piquillo , and Mr . John Le Hay is altogether excellent as the amorous Don Andres . There is not much of the Spanish dignity about Mr . Fred Kaye , whose performance of the wily Don Pedro causes roars of laughter ; and Messrs . W . Howard and A . G . Poulton , together with Miss Emmie Owen and several other charming ladies ,

materially contribute to the general effect . The opera is splendidly staged , both the sceuery and costumes being thoroughly appropriate , while the excellent orchestra conducted by Mr . Ernest Ford is as perfect as possible . The crowded state of the theatre sufficiently demonstrates that the piece has caught on , though Bro . Brickwell ' s prospective arrangements must soon curtail the run of the opera .

Parkhurst . —Mr . Edward Lockwood ' s clever company in that most charming musical production of modern time , " La Poupee , " by Ordonneau and Sturgess , music by Audran , appears afc this Theatre next week . " La Poupee" contains every element necessary to a complete success ^ in a

high degree of perfection—bright , tuneiul music , racy dialogue , magnificent dresses , lovely scenery , and , above all , a novel , ingenious and interesting plofc . Madame Adelina Patbi expresses her very favourable opinion in the following letter : — London , 10 th September 1897 .

Our Lodge ceremonial work so readily lends itself to division and sub-division , says " The Mallet , " ia " Glasgow Evening News , " that it is matter for surprise that so few take advantage of this means of creating au increased interest in the conferring of the various degrees . The monotony in which degree ceremonies are frequently performed makes it a tiring

ordeal to listen to the same voice droning in the ear through a sitting of three-quarters of aa hour . We cannot ail be elocutionary experts , but Worshipful Masters , by a little exercise , can create an interest among die Officers in the Lodge over which they preside , and get them to take their own part in the ceremony , and not only relieve themselves of vocal effort , but

give au additional attraction to the work of the Lodge . At the second degree ceremony in the St . Mungo Lodge , JNO . 27 , last Thursday , the W . M . iiro . Eoberc Speirs was complimented by Past Masters who were present in allowing the other Officers to take their respective parts , The offices in many of the Lodges in Glasgow will suffer change daring the next three months , and

to those who are new to the chair 1 would appeal , in the interest of their respective Lodges , to divide the ceremonial work among the other Officers as much ^ as possible . Give every Officer his part , and let every Officer perfect himself in ic . With everyone ' s interest ) aroused there will be no more work slovenly done , no more dull Lodges during ceremonies .
