THE regular meeting of the Lodge was held on Saturday , Snd inst ., at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet Street , under the presidency of Bro . Charles Lock W . M . At the conclusion of the proceedings a banquet was held , after which a most enjoyable musical programme was given as a supplement to the cl & tom & ry toasts . 0 o o
ECCENTRIC LODGE , No . 2488
THE Brethren of this popular and flourishing Lodge have good reason to be proud of their present Worshipful Master Bro . F . Osmond Carr P . J . G . W . Cambridgeshire , who gave them a grand Masonio treat at the meeting of the Lodge held at the Criterion , Piccadilly Circus , last Friday . The three degrees , including the charge to the Initiate , were most impressively rendered by Bro . Carr , and elicited the hearty commendation of the Lodge , not only for the manner in which the ritual was delivered , but for the excellent way the details of the various ceremonies were conducted .
The W . M . was ably assisted by his Officers , Bros . Walter Clifford S . W ., W . S . Hooper J . W ., J . H . Hawkins Chaplain , J . A . Harrison and J . Foss Deacons , and among those who were present were Bros . George Burt P . J . G . W , Dorset , C . 0 . Burgess 2473 , Orlton Cooper P . M . 211 , F . M . Newton P . M . 90 , J . Brill 780 , 0 . Kiefert St . Asaph , Walter J . W . Beard Treasurer , Will E . Chapman P . P . S . G . W . Bucks . Secretary and many others .
Bros . Edmund Ferguson and Lewis C . James having proved their proficiency as Fellow Crafts were raised to the sublime degree , tbe beautiful ceremony being rendered still moro solemn by the adoption of the Cambridge working of the ritual , which enjoins the reading of portions of the Holy Writings , while the Brethren are representing our Master H . A ., and the members of the Lodge marching in procession round the temple to tho mournful strains of the organ .
Brothers Frank Harris , Ernest R . Pugh , Frank Boyd , E . R . Lang , and Arthur E . Baker were passed to the second degree ; and Mr . Harold S . Simmons , having been balloted for and approved , was duly initiated into the mysteries of the Brotherhood . The next business was the election of a Worshipful Master for the ensuing year , the ballot proving in favour of Bro . Walter Clifford . Brother Beard was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . Elliss was re-appointed Tyler .
The sum of ten guineas was voted from the Lodge funds to head the Senior Warden ' s list as Steward for the next Boys School Festival ; and it was decided to present Bro . Osmond Carr with a special P . M . jewel as a mark of recognition of his services to the Lodge . The W . M . having received the good wishes of the Visitors then closed the Lodge in due form , and the Brethren proceeded to the dining room .
The usual complimentary toasts were given and acknowledged , and as the Lodge boasts of many talented Bohemians a very enjoyable evening was spent . In spite of its name there is nothing eccentric in the working inside the Lodge , but to keep up its reputation one or two novel ideas are introduced at the festive board . Thus , after the Charity Box has been circulated it is
put up to auction by tho W . M . and generally a high sum is realised for the Benevolent Fund , much amusement being caused by tho speculation as regards the amount the box contains . The revival of the old Masonic joke " The Secretary ' s Toast" also tends to induce a great deal of fun and enhance the enjoyment of the Brethren . o o o
INSTRUCTION
— : o . *—FRIARS LODGE OF INSTRUCTION , No , 1349
THE annual supper was successfully held on Monday , 25 th ult ., when Bro . Musto , the host of the White Horse , White Horse Lane , the home of the Lodge of Instruction , put forth every effort to make the occasion worthy the event , says the " East London Observer . " The W . M . of the Mother Lodge , Bro . Charles Eschwege , presided , having on his right the genial Secretary Bro . N . Goldman , and being faced by Bro . L . A . DaCosta P . M . Preceptor .
After the Brethren had partaken of an excellent supper , which was most creditably served , under the personal superintendence of Bro . Musto , the W . M . proposed the usual toasts . Bro . L . A . DaCosta gave that of the Chairman in felicitous terms , and Bro . Eschwege replied in a terse but most effective speech .
The toast of the Preceptor was then proposed , and Bro . L . A . DaCosta , in his reply , pointed out that although he was always in attendance , and that the members of the Friars Lodge , more than any other , had done much to disseminate instruction to those who required it , yet it was an undoubted fact that the Lodge of Instruction suffered from a paucity of attendance on
ordinary night meetings . He made a spirited appeal to those who were present to not only come themselves , but bring with them others of the Craft . That they would be welcome went without saying .
Bro . Goldman ' s reply as Secretary was brief , but to the point , and he reiterated the remarks of the Preceptor ; also appealing to the Brethren to give him their support at the ordinary meetings of the Lodge , which take place every Monday , at 8 o ' clock .
HENDON LODGE OF INSTRUCTION , No . 2206 . THE annual meeting and supper was held at the Eailway Hotel , West Hampstead , on Tuesday , 19 th ult . The chair was occupied by the Preceptor Bro . W . A . Scurrah P . P . G . S . of Works Middlesex , & c , who was
supported by Bros . W . M . Stiles P . M ., G . H . Lewis P . M ., J . Thwaites P . M ., W . J . Songhurst W . M ., W . B . Parsons W . M ., A . A . Nottingham P . M ., A . H . Scurrah P . M ., and several others . The installation ceremony was worked by Bro . J . H , Gunn W . M .
Reports Of Meetings.
Eavenscroft Lodge , No . 2331 , and the executive Officers for the year were elected . The report of the Secretary Bro . John Hudson P . M . showed that the Lodge of Instruction now numbered sixty members , and that twenty-two from different Lodges in the metropolis had joined during the past year . During the evening a selection of music was contributed by Bros . Adams , Brown , Dobbs , Fearis , and Parsons , the accompaniments being ably rendered by Bro . Arter .
