MARK MASONRY .

— : o * . — GRAND LODGE .

THE Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge of Mark Masons was held on Tuesday , at Mark Masons' Hall , the Earl of Euston M . W . Pro Grand Master , presiding . His Lordship was supported by Viscount Dungarvan , Lord Skelmersdale , the Hon . A . de Tatton Egerton , Bro . Justice Bruce , Baron de

Ferrieres , Henry Vincent , E . St . Clair , E . M . Lott , Henry Lovegrove , Sir Beginald Hanson , Col . A . B . Cook , Charles Belto ^ , Captain Philips , Major Probyn , Major Carrell , General F Gadsden , C . H . Driver , R . Loveland Loveland , Frederick Mead , Richard Eve , Capt . T . C . Walls , C . F . Matier , Frank Richardson , and many others .

The Grand Secretary announced that he had received a letter from Bro . W . F . Lamonby withdrawing his candidature for the Grand Treasurership . Bro . W . E . Chapman proposed , and Major Carrell seconded the election of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales as M . W . Grand

Master for the ensuing year , and that motion was put by the Earl of Euston and carried unanimously . Dr . Balfour Cockburn G . D . C . proclaimed His Boyal Highness in customary form as duly elected . Bro . Eobert Main proposed and Major Carrell seconded

Bro . Percy Wallis for election as Grand Treasurer , Bro . Main stating that he thought the Provinces should have a share of representation in the Grand Treasurership , and Major Carrell suggesting if it was not too late and he was not out of order , that the election should be unanimous .

Bro . H . J . Lardner proposed and Bro . Nelson Prower seconded Capt . Thomas Charles Walls , the former giving a long fist of the immense services of Bro . Walls to the Mark Degree , and Bro . Prower stating he did not understand the appeal of the Provinces , he thinking that whether from London or the country the best man should be elected .

Bro , Percy Wallis was elected , having 111 votes against Capt . Walls ' s 68 . The report of the General Board , which we published in full last week , was taken as read , and ordered to be received and entered on the minutes .

On the motion of Bro . Loveland Loveland , seconded by Bro . Frank Richardson , the two Lodges recommended for erasure , not having complied with No . 150 of the Constitutions , were ordered to be erased . The President stated he had received a letter from the District Grand Master that there was no possibility of these two Lodges meeting again .

Bro . Loveland Loveland moved that the Report be adopted with the exception of the last paragraph but one . As to this paragraph he asked that it be postponed till next meeting , the Earl of Lathom desiring to enquire further into the alleged irregularities of this Lodge .

Bro . Frank Richardson seconded . Postponing the subject would do no harm , and it would be a graceful act to Lord Lathom . The Earl of Euston said a full report would be sent to Lord

Lathom of what had taken' place before the General Board . He thought Lord Lathom had heard one side only . It would be respectful to Lord Lathom , who always had the interests of Masonry so . much at heart , that this paragraph should be postponed , to come on at the June meeting .

With the exception of the paragraph relating to the Moore Lodge the report was then adopted and Grand Lodge was closed .

SINCERITY LODGE , No . 35 . THE annual meeting was held at the Town Hall , Stonehouse , Plymouth , on Monday evening , when Bro . H . W . Mayne was installed W . M . by Bros . G . Dunsterville and Parker , assisted by Bros . Major Shanks , A . Trout , H . Langmead , A . Maddock , and T . Gidley .

— : o;—MANCHESTER CHAPTER , No . 179

IT is not often that so large a number as seven Brethren are exalted to the rank of Companions at one time , as was tho case at tho last convocation of this Chapter , held at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet Street , E . G ., on the 28 th ult . This desirable result was duo to the energetic M . E . Z . Comp . E . C . Mulvey P . P . G . D . of Surrey , who , since he has occupied the chair of First Principal , has worked most zealously in the interests of the Chapter .

No less than nine Brethren were approved for exaltation , viz .: —Bros . Tom Broad , Charles Roesseli , S . W . Bohm , E . Thierrin , J . Miiller , and W . A . Tanner of the Manchester Lodge , W- H . Pocklington of the Finsbury Park Lodge , F . L . Schuppisser of the Highgate Lodge , and G . T . Allen of the Sphinx Lodge ; but two of the number were prevented by indisposition from

being present . Comp . Mulvey was assised by Comps . W . Hopekirk P . Z . as H ., Charles Salter as J ., R . P . Angel Scribe E . and J . Carey P . S . The ceremony was ably rendered by the M . E . Z ., his delivery of tho Mystical Lecture being highly appreciated , and it doubtless made a lasting impression upon tho Exaltees . The Historical Lecture was also admirably given by Companion J . Ell-wood I . P . Z .

Comps . H . A . Badman , Alex . Schweigh , and Alfred Cook were accepted as Joining Members , so that the Chapter appears to be in a most flourishing condition . Comp . J . W . Cain was installed in the second chair and was subsequently elected as M . E . Z . for the ensuing year , while the following other

Companions were also elected to the various offices : —Charles Salter as H ., T . Simkins W . M . of the Mother Lodge as J ., E . C . Mulvey Treasurer , R . P . Angel Scribe E ., J . Carey Scribe N ., Puzey P . S ., Watt 1 st Assistant , Joslin 2 nd Assistant , Giddens Steward , and R . Whiting Janitor . Comps . Dr . Forbes , T . Broad and W . A . Tanner were appointed Auditors .

Upon the proposition of Comps . W . Hopekirk and W . Dickeson a P . Z . ' s jewel was voted to Comp . Mulvey , for his valuable services to the Chapter during his year of office ; and a vote of sympathy was passed to Comp . J . Kew P . Z . in his illness . This concluding the business of the evening the convocation was closed in solemn form , and the Companions adjourned to supper .

EXCELSIOR CHAPTER , No . 1042 . AT a meeting held at the Masonic Hall , Great George Street , Leeds , on Thursday , 28 th ult ., the Principals for the ensuing year were installed —namely Comps . William Smith Z ., J . W . Blackburn H ., and J . B . Mays J ., the ceremony being performed by Companions 0 . L . Mason and William Flockton .

The Visitors were numerous , including Companions from the other Leeds Chapters , and from York , Halifax and Wakefield . After the business proceedings a very pleasant social and musical evening was spent , Comp . G , F . Carr ably accompanying the songs .

Freemasons throughout the country will no doubt join xa congratulating the popular Provincial Grand Master of West Yorkshire Bro . W . L . Jackson , M . P ., on his elevation to the important position of Chairman of the Great Northern Railway Company , a post rendered vacant by the resignation of Lord

Colville of Culross , who , having been chairman for twenty-three years , has retired owing to ill-health . Mr . Jackson , says the " Star , " is " a leather tanner in Leeds . He is understood to be very wealthy . His works at Buslingthorpe are of great dimensions , and are famous for the tanning of "East India ' kips '

and for the currying of waxed kip butts . The great business has been created by Mr . Jackson himself , who inherited it as a small concern from his father . The new Great Northern Eailway chairman is probably the only British subject whose head has

figured on a stamp . It was a threepenny telephone stamp , and Mr . Jackson looked right royal upon it . The stamp was suppressed , but copies of it aro retained in the collections of a few philatelists . "

o o o We are glad to find from the " British Weekly" that Nonconformist ministers are beginning to take an interest in Freemasonry , and that the special Masonic service held by the Rev . W . J . Dawson , of the Highbury-quadrant Church , was in

every way very successful . The edifice was crowded ; even the pulpit stairs and passages were thronged , and large numbers failed to obtain admission . It is stated that this was the first time there has ever been a parade of the Craft in a Nonconformist place of worship . It may be mentioned that the same church is

fitted with a telephone , which not only transmits to distant adherents the sermon , prayers , and music , but also makes a collection , just as if the hearers were in the building . The Rev .

Mr . Dawson announced that his " invisible audience" had contributed thirty shillings towards the mission-work of his church . Buttons are not transmissible by telephone . — " Daily Telegraph . "

Referring to this same service , the " Islington Recorder " says the collection only realised £ 43 , subsequently made up to £ 50 by a number of the Brethren present . Considering that the congregation numbered about 2 , 500 , the result , says our contemporary , cannot be looked upon as by any means satisfactory .
