Duke of Connaught Lodge , No . 15 24 . INSTALLATION OF BROTHER ALBERT SMITH . IN a Lodge so intimately associated with the Royal Family as No . 1524 , which bears the njame of one of its most respected members ^ H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught—it is not to be wondered . that sentiments of loyalty and respect for the departed Queen , and :
sympathy with her family , should have a . marked influence on the members of the Lodge , and induce them to give up all ideas of festivities in connection with the meeting which fell for the 31 st ult , even though it was the regular day for the installation Festival , of the Lodge—the anniversary , of many most successful gatherings in its past history , as well as of its actual foundation . will
We . not-say that- for the-time being ; Masonry was forgotten by the members of the Duke of Connaught Lodge , for it was to . prove their loyalty—which is essentially one of the first attributes of the Brotherhood—that the members gave up all' idea of entertainment , and that refreshment after labour which has been so marked a characteristic in connection with : previous annual celebrations in this Lodge ; and no Brother who attended on . the occasion could . have
accused the members who were present to take part in the actual work with shirking their duties , albeit they were , stricken . ; with the . grief which has smitten the hearts of all classes duri ng the past few weeks ; but at the same time everything seemed ; different to what we have been accustomed to at Installation meetings of- this- Lodge ,, and we almost failed to recognise in the assembly : anything-of . " the .
Masonic surroundings we had come to regard as almost inseparable from such meetings . True , the Master and his Officers were present ; the worthy Treasurer Bro . W . H . Brand P . M . —the first initiate of the Lodge and its oldest member—was in his place , side , by side with Bro . C . Lorkin P . M . Secretary , who comes third on the roll of
membership , and everything was , so to speak , in order ; and yet nearly everything seemed lacking ; the explanation truly being- that the members mourned the death of their Queen , and could hardly give their mind to anything but regret at the great loss to the whole of her empire . However , it was recognised that , there was necessary work to be done in connection with the Lodge—th <* installation of the new Master , the appointment of Officers and

other items , and these were accordingly arranged'for in , due order . The Lodge was ? regularly opened at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet , Street , by the- W . M . Bro . James Bedford , who had the . minutes of the , la ^ t , regVilarj meeting andi of the Audit , put for confirmation and duly signed , after which Bros . Adlington andt Desprez , candidates for passing , wer e examined ; and entrusted ; the Lodge was opened in , the second degree , and- those two Brethren were passed 1 as Fellow-Crafts .
Next followed the installation of Bro . Albert Smith W . M-.-elect , who was placed in the chair . with all ceremony and impressiveness , the solemnity of the occasion being increased by the gloom which overhung everyone in consequence of the National bereavement .
The new ruler was . , proclaimed and saluted , and then proceeded to appoint and invest his Assistant Officers , as follow : Bros . F . Henderson S . W ., W . D . H .. Willis . J . W ., William H . Brand P . M . Treas ., Charles Lorkin P . M . Secretary , E . Frisby P . M . Organist , H . G . C . Hollinghurst S . D ., J . B . Welch J . D ., H . R . Harding . I . G ., L . G . Hammond D . C ., E . T . Stevens and A . S . Black Stewards , E . Williams Tyler .
This work being completed , the three addresses were given , and then the W . M , presented to his predecessor the handsome Past Master's jewel which had been voted by the Lodge , and which bore the following inscription : Presented by the Duke of Connaught Lodge , 1524 ,
to BRO . J AMES BEDFORD P . M . In recognition of his valuable services as W . M . 1900 . 1900-01 . The presentation , was . suitably acknowledged , by the recipient
, who was heartily congratulated on the successful termination of his year of Office .. The ballot was . now taken for Mr . Marcus . Weinstein , a enndidate for initiation , and being unanimous in his favour he was regularly admitted to a participation in the mysteries of Freemasonry by the new- Master , who thus early proved his capabilities
as an efficient ruler in the Craft , and gave promise of . successful working during . the coming year , when , as was proved later on at this gathering , there appears to be a likelihood " of a regular and strong flow of work in the different degrees . The names of three gentlemen , were handed in as candidates for initiation : there is another candidate besides the initiate of this
evening on the rota for passing , and four will be eligible for raising as soon as the prescribed time limit has elapsed , so that there is work—and plenty of it—coming on in all three degrees . Before closing the Lodge the question of holding an emergency , meeting to deal with this larpe amount of work , and celebrate the installation of new Master was fully considered , but as . there were only two dates open on which the Hotel could accommodate the
