THE Com-t left Balmoral for Windsor on Wednesday afternoon , after a longer stay than usnal . This delay in the return southward was due to the illness of Prince Leopold , and ifc is owing- to his fortunate convalescence that her Majesty has now found ifc possible to quit her highland residence . Everywhere en route tho royal travellers were
greeted with the heartiest demonstrations of loyalty and affection , and the Queen manifested her appreciation of this reception by bowing her acknowledgments . The party included the Princess Beatrice and Prince Leopold ,
who appeared somewhat lame , and the ladies and gentlemen of the Court in attendance were the Dowager Marchioness of Ely , the hon . Lady Churchill , the hon . Amy Lambert , Lord Charles Eitzroy , Major-General Ponsonby , and Dr . Marshall .
Saturday last "was the thirty-third anniversary of tho Princess of Wales ' s birthday , and the occasion was observed with the usual festivities . On Monday evening , His Royal Highness reached Elvedon , near Thctford , the residence of the Maharajah Dhuleep Singh , where he remained some
clays as a guest , a large number of distinguished personages , including the Earl and Countess of Leicester , the Duke of Athole , the Marquis de Grey and Ripon , Viscount Holmesdale , Lords Dacre , Henniker , Rendlesham , Balfour ,
Westbury , Frederick Eitzroy , & c , & o . The party enjoyed some excellent shooting- in the Maharajah ' s preserves . The Prince has sent from Sandringham several presents of game for the use of the in-patients of our London hospitals .
The meeting of Grand Lodge on Wednesday was more numerously attended than usual , in consequence of the notice on the agenda paper that the Grand Master would draw attention to the recent act of the G . Orient , and , no doubt , likewise in part owing to Rev . Bro . Simpson ' s
motions on the so-called " German Question . " The " outcome of the former notice , as proposed by the Earl of Carnarvon Pro G . M . who presided , was the appointment of a committee of inquiry into all the circumstances , and in due time to report to Grand Lodge what course , in their
opinion , should be pursued . Rev . Bro . Simpson ' s series of resolutions led to some discussion , and nothing more , as , in the end , the last two resolutions were withdrawn . On Tuesday , the half-yearly communication of the Mark Grand
Lodge was held at Freemasons' Tavern , and Lord Skelmersdale , Deputy G . M . M . M ., was nominated Grand Mark Master Mason of England and Wales , & c , in succession to the Earl of Limerick . Particulars of both gatherings will be found elsewhere in our columns .
During the latter part of the week there has been great excitement in the neighbourhood of the Agricultural Hall , Islington , the cattle , sheep , p igs , agricultural implements , ( fee , being in course of reception for the Smithfield Club Cattle Show , which opens on Monday afternoon . As wo
announced last week , both the Queen aud the Prince of Wales will be among the exhibitors , and no doubt , if we may judge from the results of the Birmingham Cattle Show , one or other , and perhaps both of them , will be included among the prize winners .
The chief event in the literary world is the appearance of the third volume of Mr . Theodore Martin ' s " Life of the late Prince Consort . " We have not yet perused the work , but we have read many of the reviews , and we should judge from these that this volume of the Prince ' s biography will
be road with the deepest interest . The period ovor which ifc extends includes the Crimean War of 1 - '•"> i- ( j , and the Prince ' s views on Russian ao-gression are H . HO to arouse a
strong feeling among Englishmen of to- i . iy , when another Russo-Turkish war is in progress , and flu interests of this mighty empire in the East are , if not exactly imperilled , at least , in a very critical and uncertain state .
