The Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.
THE DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS .
TT ^ HE Empire Lodge , No . 2108 , under the auspices of I distinguished Officers of Grand Lodge , purpose entertaining such of the Indian and Colonial guests as may belong to the Craft who are visiting this country for the Diamond Jubilee Festivities . The banquet -will be held at the Hotel Cecil on
Monday , 14 th June , after the great meeting at the Albert Hall . The authorities at the Indian and Colonial Offices , and the various Agents-General , are affording cordial assistance . Communications from Indian and Colonial visitors are invited by the Treasurer , Bro . Lennox Browne , 15 Mansfield Street , Portland Place .
THE St . David ' s Lodge , No . 2226 , Ehymney , will celebrate the record reign on Thursday , 17 th June , with a church parade , followed by a special Masonic Service , at St . David ' s Church at 3 . 30 p . m ., to which ihe general public will be admitted .
Afterwards , a banquet will take place , concluding with a Ladies ' evening . The arrangements are in the hands of an energetic Committee , and everything will be carried out in the best way possible .
THE Brethren of the Hounslow district will not be behind in showing their loyalty in a practical and sympathetic manner during the Jubilee festivities . A movement is on foot amongst them to hold a special service at one of the local Churches on
the Sunday either preceding or that following the 22 nd June , on behalf of the funds of the Hounslow Hospital . ; This is the most definite of any of the proposals that have yet been made m the Hounslow and Heston districts for celebrating the great time .
The Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.
The acquisition of a Recreation Ground for Hounslow is too remote as yet to be considered as a probable event of the Diamond year , although there is every hope that it will ultimately be brought about . Among other suggestions have been the renovation of Heston" Church , the building of a tower for St .
Stephen ' s Church , and the erection of a clock tower at the Hounslow Fountain , but nothing of a tangible nature has yet been decided upon with regard to these matters . It is generally supposed that some sorb of a demonstration or fete will be organised for Jubilee Day itself .
New Temple At Ebbw Vale.
NEW TEMPLE AT EBBW VALE .
nnHE interesting ceremony of laying the foundation stone of I the new Masonic Temple at Ebbw Vale—to be erected in commemoration of the Queen ' s Diamond Jubilee—was performed on Thursday , 29 th ult . The Provincial Grand Master Colonel
Chas . Lyne conducted a special Provincial Grand Lodge at the Glyn Ebbw Lodge room , Central Hall Buildings , where a procession was formed , and proceeded through the main thoroughfare to the site of the new building . There was a large attendance of Brethren from all parts .
The Provincial Grand Master , at the request of Bro . M . J . S . Lyons W . M . of the Glyn Ebbw Lodge , proceeded to lay the stone . Underneath it was placed a brass plate , bearing the inscription :
This stone was laid by COLONEL CHABEES LYME B . W . P . G . M ., 29 th April 1897 . M . J . S . LYONS W . M . Glyn Ebbw Lodge , No . 2556
Col . Lyne was presented with a silver trowel , suitably inscribed . The procession was afterwards re-formed , and proceeded to the Central Hall , where the special Provincial Grand Lodge was closed . The luncheon was provided in the Literary and Scientific Institute . The architect of the building is Mr . J . P . Davies , and the builder Mr . S . T . Davies , Ebbw Vale .
The attention of subscribers to the Eoyal Masonic Benevolent Institution is particularly directed to the case of Bro . T . Knowles , No . 55 on the list of candidates . He was for twentyfive years a watchmaker in King Street , Hammersmith , and
through chronic asthma and rheumatic gout has been compelled , to cease work . He and his wife are sixty-six years of age , and through provident habits are in possession of 7 s 9 d per week , this being their whole income from every source . Brethren are
most earnestly asked to support this case , and to send any votes they may have to Bro . Arthur Williams , 83-85 Hammersmith Eoad , Secretary of the West London Masonic Election Association .
The " universality of Freemasonry , " so often insisted on by the members of the mysterious Craft , and , in a lesser degree , the universality of the name of Smith , were alike illustrated at the great gathering at Freemasons' Hall on Wednesday evening last , when the Grand Officers for the year were appointed and invested
by Lord Lathom , presiding as Pro Grand Master for the Prince of ¦ Wales . The Grand Officers themselves were chosen indifferently from almost every walk of English society , and represented Lords , Commons , divinity , law , medicine , surgery , music , drama , army , finance , and trade , while the Deputy Grand Eegistrar , the Grand Organist , and one of the Assistant Grand Secretaries all rejoiced in the name of Smith . — " World . The Freemasons' Calendar and Directory for the Province of Essex , 1897 . The thirteenth annual issue of this calendar appears under the editorship of the Provincial Grand Secretary , who has carefully compiled the information usually given in such works , making a particular feature of the record of votes held in the Province for the three Institutions of the Craft . In pursuance of a recommendation from the Essex Board of General Purposes the Calendar
this year contains portraits and brief sketches of the Brethren who have devoted so much time and trouble to the work of the Charity Committee , since the formation of that body , by attending at the elections and negotiating the voting power of the Province . Accordingly wo have faithful representations of Bros . Bichard Clowes P . G . St . B . P . P . S . G . W ., H . E . Dehane P . P . S . G . D .,
E . Hhedd P . P . G . B ., and Bro . F . A . White P . P . G . B ., while another whom it was intended to similarly honour—Bro . Frederick Wood P . P . S . G . W . —is omitted , because the editor was unable to obtain his portrait . These memorials of active workers are a welcome addition to the many other useful purposes to which such Provincial Calendars can he adapted , and will no doubt become popular in years to come .
