A SPECIAL mooting of this Provincial Grand Lodge was held at tho Ship and Turtle Tavern , Leadenhall Street , B . C ., on Thursday , 30 th January last , for the purposo of Installing a new Deputy Provincial Grand Master , in tho place of the late Bro . Frederic Davison deceased .

There were present : —Tho Right Worshipful the Provincial Grand Master Sir Francis Burdett Barfc ., Bros . Henry Love , grove S . W ., Dr . John T . Griffith J . W ., J . Hugh Thompson S . O ., Nelson Prowor J . O ., Rev . J . Cater Chaplain , Charles Hammerton Treasurer , P . Saillard Registrar ,

W . G . Brighten Secretary , J . H . Clare J . D ., W . Lloyd Wise Inspector of Works , T . C . Edmonds D . C ., F . R . Hales A . D . C ., R . J . other brethren . Visitors : —Bros . Major Ritchie and Weston Prov . Grand Officers of Kent , and Bro . Henry A . Hunt of the Ruspini Lodge . The Lodge room and furniture were draped in deep mourning . The R . W . Provincial Grand Master and his Officers entered the Lodge room in formal

procession , to the strains of tho Organ ( Bro . Charles Lee Organist ) . The Dead March in Saul was played as tho procession was being formed . The Lodge was opened in duo form and with solemn prayer from the Provincial Grand Chaplain , aud the Provincial Grand Master was

saluted in ancient form . The Provincial Grand Secretary offered to read the minutes of last regular Provincial Grand Lodge for general information , hut stated that as no minutes could be confirmed at this special Lodge it might

beconvenient to proceed at once with the next business on tho agenda . This was agreed to . The Secretary then officially reported to the Lodge the death of the R . W . Frederic Davison Deputy Provincial Grand Master , and also stated that on behalf of the Province ho had

written to Mrs . Davison and family a letter of condolence , which was as follows : — Prov . G . L . of M . M . M . for MiddIo ? ex and Surrey . DKAR MADAM , —The melancholy intelligence of the death of our distinguished Bro . F . Davison , tho esteemed Deputy Provincial Grand Juartc

Blaster , has been received with extreme regret . Our Into brother was universally respected by all the Craft , and his less will bo severely felt . By the command of tho Provincial Grand Master ( Cui . Sir Francis Burdett ) a special circular h ; is been sent out to all the Mark Lodges within tho Province for the Lodges and brethren to go into

mourning , as a mark of respect for our late brother . A copy » f the circular is enclosed for yonr information . On bohalf of the Mark Muster Masons of this Province , we tender this imperfect tributo of ttfFectionato remembrance , and trust you may bear Tiith fortitude the trial and affliction with which yon are now visited .

To thi 3 letter a suitable reply from Mrs . Davison was read , expressing her thanks for the kind sympathy of the brethren . The Provincial Grand Mastor , in feeling terms , referred to tho eminent services of the late Bro . Davison in connection with Mark Masonry , and the loss the Province

had sustained by reason of his death . Bro . Henry Lovegrove , Provincial Grand Senior Warden , moved a resolution to the effect that tbo Provincial Grand Lodge thereby recorded its sorrow on hearing of tbo death of their Deputy Provincial Grand Master Bro . Frederic Davison , and

testified to his eminent abilities , and that the Provincial Grand Secretary should bo directed to communicate same to the Widow . This was seconded by tho Junior Grand Warden ( Bro . Dr . Griffith and carried unanimously . The Provincial Grand Secretary also reported the death of the

Rev . G . W . Wcldon , Provincial Grand Chaplain , and a similar tributo was paid to his memory . Tho Provincial Grand Secretary then read a letter from Bro . Charles Hammerton , resigning his office as Provincial Grand Treasurer . Bro . Hammorton , addressing the Lodgo ,

explained that as ho had been selected by the Provincial Grand Master for tho high office of Deputy Provincial Grand Master , ho had no alternative but to resign the office of Treasurer . Tho resignation was accepted with regret . Bro . Hammorton having retired , the Provincial Grand

Master then announced that he had selected Bro . Charles Hammerton as his Deputy , by reason of his many good qualities , and bis long connection with the Province , since 1872 . A deputation of Grand Officers then waited upon fho Deputy Grand Master designate , and escorted him into

tho Lodge Room . Having advanced to the East , the Grand Master addressed him in suitable terms , and invested him with his chain and jewel of office . The patent of appointment was then signed by the Grand Master , and read by tho Prov . Grand Secretary to the Lodge . The Deputy

Provincial Grand Master was saluted in duo form , and returned a suitable acknowledgment . The election of Treasurer was then proceeded with . There were two nominations , Bros . John Cates Collier P . M . No . 114 P . G . Stoward , and Bro . Leopold G . Gordon Robbins

P . P . G . W . After a well contested election , Bro . Robbins was declared duly electod Treasurer , and was thereupon invested . An Assistant Secretary was also invested , to aid the Provincial Grand Secretary in his duties . Several

lettors of regrot from Provincial Grand Officers for enforced absence from tho meeting wore read . The Provincial Grand Lodgo was closed in due form , and the brethren adjourned to banquet , when the usual Loyal and Masonio toasts were given and duly responded to .

Bradford And District Masonic Literary Society.

BRADFORD AND DISTRICT MASONIC LITERARY SOCIETY .

A MEETING was held on Tuesday , the 21 st ultimo , at the Free , masons' Hall , Salem Street , Bradford , of brethren interested in the advancement of the Order , when an interesting paper was read by Bro . G . W . Speth , P . M . Secretary of the Quatuor Ooronati Lodge , No . 2076 , on " The Degrees of Ancient ( pre 1717 )

Freemasonry . " Some discussion took place on the subject of the paper , and on the motion of Bro . W . C . Lupton , seconded by Bro . Herbert Cro 3 sley , a vote of thanks was acoorded to Bro . Speth . The meeting , which , was of an extremely interesting Dature throughout , was closed by a vote of thanks to the Chairman , Brother Thomas Norfolk W . M . COO .

The installation of Colonel J . Davis as Worshipful Master of tho Jerusalem Lodge , No . 197 , took place on the 24 th ult ., succeeded by a banquet at the Freemasons ' Tavern . Brother Lionel A . Monckton was the retiriug Worshipful Master .

The annual meeting of tho St . John ' s Lodge , No . 1039 , was held at the George Hotel , Lichfield , on Wednesday , tho 22 nd ult ., when Bro . W . A . Wood was installed W . M .

Bro . Hermann Crohn was installed Master of St . Paul's Lodge , No . 194 , at a meeting held on tho 21 st ultimo , at Cannon Street Hotel . Bro . F . V . Hawley was tho retiring Worshipful Master .

The installation of Bro . G . V . A . Schofield as Master of tho Cadogan Lodge , No . 162 , took place on tho 21 st ult ., ; it a meetiug at Freemasons' Hall , W . C , Bro . A . Wollesley Pockham being the outgoing W . M .
