CONVERSAZIONE AND BALL AT STOKE .

rpHE third annual oonvorsazione and ball in aid of the Masouio J- Charities was held on the 29 th nit ., in the Town Hall , Stoke , when the gathering was a most brilliant and successful one in every respect . It is now three years ago since a conversazione , in conjunction with a ball , was first held , although Masonio balls had previously taken place , and the members of the Portland Lodge ,

637 , were the first to promote an entertainment of this description . This mode of increasing tho funds of the various Masonio Charities proved highly acceptable , and was greatly appreciated . Last year a similar gathering was held at Hanley , when there waa a very large attendance . Although the nunibera were not so large as last year , owing to the tickets being limited , the utmost capacity of the Stoke

Town Hall wa 3 taxed , there bein « 350 ladies and gentlemen present , every room being at tho disposal of tho visitors . Great attention had been paid to tho decoration of the interior of the building , and in this respect a great success had been achieved . The entrance-hall which ha 3 recently been decorated with tiles , presented a oharmiug appearance . At either side of the corridor and staircase leading to

tho ball-room was a liberal display of p lants and evergreens , and these were illuminated with Chinese lanterns , the effect being moat pleasing . Lice curtains and drapery had been cleverly hung , and tho usually bare appearance of the inside of the building had undergone quite a transformation . On entering the ball room , whioh waa of course th 9 assembly room , one was at once struck with the pretty

spectacle . The walls had been hung with curtains , and there was a liberal display of banera and flags , while on the front of the gallery were suspended Masonic emblems and the portraits of various brethren of the province who had taken high rank in the Craft . The stage was also very effectively decorated with plants and evergreens , behind which Mr . Coomer ' s band discoursed the dance music , the

excellence of whioh was generally remarked . The space underneath the gallery had been converted into a refreshment buffet ; while the Court-room waa used aa a supper-room . This important and essential department was iu the capable hands of Bro . Raynes , of the Copeland Arms Hotel , who attended to the wants of the guests in a highly satisfactory manner . The Masons appeared in full Masonio

clothing , and this added greatly to the variety of the scene . There were many Provincial Officers present , who were arrayed in their " purple , " whilst tho clothing of the Mark Masons , members of the Royal Arch , and that of the Craft , produced a pleasing contrast . The dresses of the ladies were very boautiful , and the scene wheu dancing was at its height was a very charming and pretty one . For

Selections by tho band were given from eight o'clock to half-past , while in the followiug three quarters of an hour glees were contributed in tho Council Chamber by the Newcastle Glee Union .
