THE cathedral city of Salisbury was aroused from its oustomary quietness and repose on Saturday , the 31 st ult ., by the visit of His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught , Past Grand Master of English Freemasons , Prov . Grand Master of Sussex , and Past District Grand Master

of Bombay , who travelled from Portsmouth for 'the purpose of installing the Earl of Radnor , Treasurer of Her Majesty's Household , as Provincial Grand Master of Wiltshire , in the room of the late Lord Methuen , who for nearly forty years had occupied the position with much advantage

to the interests of local Freemasonry . The event , which had been anticipated with the greatest possible interest by the Masonic brethren , attracted an unusually numerous and influential gathering of members of the Grand Lodge ol England and representatives of many of the Masonic Provinces throughout the country .

The Duke of Connaught , who travelled by ordinary train from Portsmouth , reached Salisbury shortly before one o'clock , and was received at the railway station by Lord Radnor , Lord Lathom , and the Mayor and Corporation of Salisbury . Lord Radnor introduced the Duke of

Connaught to the Mayor ( Alderman Lovibond ) , and His Royal Highness expressed his appreciation of the hearty manner in which he had been received . The 1 st Wilts Rifle Volunteers , commanded by Lieut . Macgill , acted as a guard of honour , and as the Duke left the railway station the

band of the regiment played the National Anthem . His Royal Highness , who was attended by Colonel Egerton , having taken his seat in Lord Carrington ' s carriage , drove to the Council House , where the members of the City Volunteer Fire Brigade , under the command of Captain

Gawthorne , were on duty . The Council House , a fine structure of stone , stands in the spacious market place , which is embellished by full-length statues of the late Right Hon . Sidney Herbert , one of Wiltshire ' s worthies , and of

Professor Fawcett , a distinguished native of Salisbury , whose brother was present in his robes as a member of the City Corporation to receive the Royal visitor . The Council House had been admirably fitted up by Mr . F . Simmonds , and the day ' s arrangements were perfect .

opened by Sir Gabriel Goldney , who , though nearly 80 years of age , ably discharged the dntiea of that office . At a subsequent stage the Duke of Connaught was conducted into the Lodge and greeted with great applause . The Prince then occupied the chair , and proceeded to

instal Lord Radnor as Prov . Grand Master . Complimenting the Province upon the appointment which tho Prince of Wales had made , his Royal Highness gavo an interesting review of the history ol Freemasonry in Wiltshire , dating from the year 1777 , and paid a fitting tribute to tho memory

On the motion of Lord Radnor , a resolution was adopted recording the sense of the brethren for the distinguished services rendered to Masonry in Wiltshire by Lord Methuen

for 38 years . The business having been concladed , the brethren adjourned to the county hall , where a banquet was served , Lord Radnor presiding .

The usual Masonic toasts were proposed and honoured , and the health of the Duke of Connaught having been drunk with great enthusiasm , The Prince expressed the great pleasure it had given him to instal Lord Radnor . Alluding to the fact of his having

been District Grand Master of Bombay , the Duke spoke of the great advance Masonry had made in India , where it had cemented national ties and brought together creeds whose professors previously would not sit at the same table . He had there visited many Lodges , not only of

Englishmen in India , but also native Lodges of Parsees and Hindoos , and he was pleased to see the way in which they carried out their Masonic duties , all speaking in English . He felt truly grateful for the right hand of

fellowship that had been extended to him , and he should not leave Wiltshire without carrying with him most agreeable recollections of the present fraternal manner in which he had been received in the city of Salisbury .

The health of the Earl of Lathom , Lord Radnor , Sir Gabriel Goldney , Bro . Beach , M . P ., and other distinguished brethren were also honoured , and the proceedings were prolonged until nearly six o ' clock . The Duchess of Connaught arrived at Salisbury shortly

after six o ' clock , and accompanied the Duke to Longford Castle , where they were the guests of the Earl and Countess of Radnor , who also entertained the Earl and Countess

On Sunday the Duke and Duchess of Connaught and the other visitors from Longford Castle drove into Salisbury , and attended divine service at the Cathedral . The city was

gay with bunting on Saturday , and the weather extremely fine . The streets were thronged with spectators , and the Royal visit excited much interest and enthusiasm .
