Arden , and Dr . William Francis Dearden , both of Wilton Lodge , No . 1077 , were successfully balloted for as Joining Members , and Bro . Albert James Holt was passed to tho degree of F . M ., who took the opportunity of congratulating Bro . Sam Luke upon being able not only to accept at a moment ' s notice the important position of Deacon , but to perform the duties in a very creditable manner .

Bro . Holt said in reply that he had not anticipated having to make another speech , thinking that after his initiation was over the ordeal was passed . He was glad to h am however that he had been enabled to answer the questions satisfactorily , and hoped to acquit himself better upon the next occasion .

The health of the newly-joined Brethren was proposed by the W . M . Bro . Arden said he thanked them sincerely for the honour they had conferred upon him , that of becoming a member of the Miunehaha Minstrel Lodge , and this was no empty phrase . As a visitor he had noticed the peace and harmony which prevailed , and he looked forward to a long and happy sojourn amongst them . Bro . Dearden also characterised it as an honour to bo considered

one of them . Two months ago he had not anticipated entering the portals of the Lodge room as a member . From an outsider ' s point of view he did not think there was a Lodge better known throughout England ; its efforts in the cause of Charity being widespread , and to the best of his ability he would do his best to maintain its prestige .

Other toasts followed , which were relieved by songs , recitations , & c , given by Bros . C . H . Beever S . W ., Chas . Harrop J . W ., Fred Hilton J . D . P . P . G . D . O ., Thomas Black P . P . GATWICK LODGE , No . 2502 . rpHIS newly-founded Lodgo has had a busy time , says last JL Saturday's " Surrey Leader , " during the week . The usual Lodge meecing was held on Tuesday , and an Emergency meeting was held on the following day , when the W . M . Bro . Roberts

initiated three new Mombers . At the close of the business the Brethren adjourned to the Constitutional Club , where the banquet ( catered for by Messrs . Brandt and Keasley ) was provided .

There was a vory large attendanco , and the occasion was rendered more interesting by reason of the presence of ladieswives and friends of the Brethren of the Lodge—in whose honour the event was distinguished as the first ladies' festival in connection with the Gatwick Lodgo .

The banquet was presided ovor by the W . M ., and the company included Colonel Money Provincial Master of Surrey . o o o

A very important function afterwards took place , the presentation to Bro . Wm . T . Schofield P . P . J . G . D ., on behalf of the Lodge , of an oil painting of himself , as a token of respect and esteem , he being a founder and first Worshipful Master . The presentation was made by Bro . John Chadwick Prov . Grand Secretary Past Grand Sword Bearer of England , in a very neat and trenchant speech , wherein the speaker drew attention to the fact that he had

known Bro . Schofield for a great number of years , and congratulated the Lodge upon the success which it had attained under him , and upon the number of initiates whem they had— although only recently established—been able to add to their roll . Though in their case ho had not a word of regret to add , yet he must remind them that such things had occurred as to push unduly into Masonry men who afterwards had not been of too much credit to it . If this

were done for the sake of the fees , it was not a commendable action to emulate , and he should personally very strongly deprecate anything of the kind . Bro . Chadwick , Asmodeus like , took off the coverings which veiled the Masonic career of Bio . Schofield , and gave some very interesting details connected therewith . He had been initiated in the Prudence Lodge , No . 219 in the year 1866 ; was Treasurer of the Strangeways Lodge , No . 1219 for 18 years ,

commencing with the year 1869 * , and was Worshipful Master of the latter Lodge as long ago as 1876 . In the year 1889 the Province of East Lancashire bestowed upon him Provincial honours , which he richly deserved . His Masonic experience had culminated with the Mastership of the Duke of York Lodge , in which position he had gained tho respect of all those with whom he had come in contact . Bro . Schofield I . P . M . thanked Bro . Chadwick for the very kind expressions of praise so lavishly bestowed upon him , and also the Brethren of tho Duke of York Lodge , upon whose behalf they had been uttered , and in return handed over the portrait to the Lodge , as a menento of his connection with it .

Bro . Boden W . M ., on behalf of the Lodge , accepted the gift with thanks , paying an additional tribute to the worth of Brother Schofield , and the esteem in which he was held by all .

A Lodgo of St . It had not previously beon the good fortune of many of those present to witness a similar consecration , and many commended tho easy way in which Bro . Matier went about his work , and the amount of enthusiasm which he displayed . We have long known

his ability in this particular kind of duty , and can appreciate the hearty expressions of those who applauded his work . In justice to Bro . Matier , it should be recorded that the Brethren listened to the beautifully impressive language with all the attention which such a ceremony deserved .

Upon the proposition of Bro . John Marshall , which was seconded by Bro . J . R . Ragdale , a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Bros . Matier and Jefferies for their attendance , and they were requested to become honorary members of the Prince George Council , which offer they accepted .

Marshall ) . Bro . Matier said he had conducted over 220 ceremonies of consecration , and he felt

sure that the Prince George Council would not be behind any of tho others in the quantity or quality of its work , and in the spread of its influence . In conjunction with Lord Euston , he wished them success , and concluded by thanking them for the honour which they had conferred upon him by making him an honorary member of the Council . Bro . AT a meeting of the Watch Committee of the Salford Corporation on Monday , Alderman W . Robinson ( the chairman ) presiding , Bro . John W . Hallam ( Senior Warden of the Derby Lodge , No . 1055 ) , Superintendent of the Detective Department , was appointed Deputy Chief Constable of the Salford police , Bro . hallam ' s predecessor having been placed on the superannuation fund with a retiring pension of £ 2 C 0 per annum . In 1882 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant , and in 1885 to the post of Inspector and chief clerk , with charge of the Government returns and other statistical work of the force . In 1889 Bro . Hallam became Detective-Superintendent , which post he has held up to

his present appointment . He initiated the first and only prosecution for boycotting which has ever taken place in England . It was a case of some Irish boycotters , who were ruining the Irish cattle trade at the Salford Cattle Market . Bro . Bro . Hallam's father , Mr .
