Concord Lodge, No. 1135.
CONCORD LODGE , No . 1135 .
TTHE annual festival of St . John the Baptist was kept by the members of this Lodge , on Monday evening , the 25 th ult ., when a snmptnons banquet was provided by Bro . Grover at the Ilfracombe Hotel . Brother Grover had apportioned off a large coffee-room for the use of the brethren , and the arrangements to fnrther their convenience was everything that could be desire ! . After dinner the
loyal and Masonic toasts were given from the ch-. A .-1 y the W . M . Bro . Albert St . Paul . A most interesting feature of the evening was tho presentation to Bro . S . Jones , of Exeter , of a handsome silver salver , which had been subscribed for by the Officers of the Lodge on tho occasion of his acting as Installing Master for the 21 st year in succession .
The presentation was made by Bro . St . Paul W . M ., who referred in appropriate terms to the excellent services which Bro . Jones had rendered to the cause of Freemasonry in general and to the Lodge Concord in particular . Iu reply , Bro . Jones said : It is with no
ordinary feelings that I rise on the present occasion to offer my most sincere thanks to you , Worshipful Sir , for the too flattering manner in which yon introduced my name to the assembled brethren , and them for the cordial manner in which the toast has been received . I
fear I must fall back on a somewhat time-worn expression when I at once state that at the present moment it is somewhat difficult for my mouth to give utterance to words which can adequately express tho feelings whioh lie deeply in my heart . I cannot but feel some emotion when I look around this table and see how few there are left of that
band of fast friends who met just twenty-two years ago to-day , when I was instituted into the chair , Sir , which yon now so worthily fill . Of that number two only are left—my old and esteemed friend Bro . Eichard Lake and myself . I cannot but feel that the words you have addressed to the brethren concerning me are due more to the
kindly feelings which I believe are entertained towards mo here by my many friends than from any merits of my own , or for any services I have rendered , as I know the obligations rest on my side , for it has been in Ilfracombe and among Ilfracombe friends I have spent so many happy pleasant days during so manv years . For the very
handsome present with which you have this day honoured me I shall ever feel gratefnl , serving as it will to cement stronger , if it were possible , the tie that binds me to this Lodge , in the welfare of which I have ever taken a deep interest . It was with feelings of pride and satisfaction I had the pleasure of joining in the opening ceremony of
yonr hall a fortnight since . It is a Lodge-room which I venture to assert is not only an acquisition to the town of Ilfracombe , but also an ornament to the Province of Devon , and reflects great credit on the brethren , Captain Ivimy , and others who have worked so hard to bring this work to completion , but especially to our worthy Brother
P . M . Catford , for the Masonic zeal he has shown in devoting such a large portion of his handsome structure to the purposes of Masonry . I can assure you it will be with great gratification I shall to-morrow tako this token of yonr esteem and confidence and Masonic regard to my home , when I am sure it will be welcomed by my dear wife and
family with feelings of pride , bnt especially so by my two eldest sons , both of whom I am glad to state are members of our Order . The eldest was initiated the day after attaining his majority , and the second one very shortly after , and to one of whom it will in the ordinary course descend as . a heirloom , and serve , I sincerely trust , to
perpetuate for many years to come those feelings of universal regard and esteem which have existed between my Ilfracombe brethren and myself . Prior to the banquet Bro . Jones installed Bro . St . Paul as W . M . for the ensuing year , and the latter duly appointed and invested the Officers to serve under him .
ST . ANDREW'S LODGE , No . 1151 .
