Mr DEAR DEPUTI * , —With greafc regret , for fcho second time , I must plead inability to be present afc the meeting of Prov . Grand Lodge . My health , though much improved , hus not yet beeu restored sufficiently to enable me to venture upon oufc-docr exertion . I must , theieforc , ask you to take charge of nnd conduct / tbe business at this , the annual meeting , and I hope you will tell my brethren how
sorry I am that I am still unable to be with them . I feel snre that the affairs of this important and ever increasing Province have been wnll and faithfully administered by you and the outgoing P . ov . G . Let ma iu conclusion add my testimony of sorrow and regret at the lamented death of H . R . H . the Duke of Clarence aud Avondale ; also at that of Colonel Shadwell H . Gierke . Tbe latter , as Grand Secretary , was intimately associated with this Province , whilst the
former was aa clostly allied to the whole country . was called . The minutes of Provincial Grand Lodge holden at Sowerby Bridge , on Wednesday , 14 th October 1891 , were presented . It was proposed by Bro . P . Cleeves P . M . 904 , seconded by Bro . Wm . Gaukroger P . M . 61 , and carried— " That the minutes be taken as read , and
confirmed . Tho acting Provincial Grand Master then delivered the following address . BRETHREN , —The unfortunate circumstances whioh compelled ma to take this chair aud address you at oar last meeting afc Sowerby Bridge , still , I regret to say , continue . The condition of our E . W . Provincial Grand Master daring the
period intervening has been very precarious , bat is now , I rejoice to say , decidedly improved . If this improvement is maintained , aa I trust it may be , we may confidently hope thafc at onr next October meeting we shall seo Bro . Tew in bis accustomed place , and I doubt no , Brethren , should that be so , that he will receive at yonr hands a weloome whioh will warm his hearb—a welcome such as hia long aud honourable devotion to the interests of the Craft in this Frovinoa
eminently deserves . Meanwhile , Brethren , though I know how much I fall short of ifc , I will endeavour to the best of my ability to supply his place . My first duty is a melancholy one . The loss whioh tbe Nation haa sustained by the death of H . R . H . the Dnke of Clarence is great ; the sympathy whioh that unfortunate occurrence has called forth has been
universal , and it would ill become as , who , as Masons are proud of our loyalty and devotion to our Queen and Country , to let this , the first opportunity we have had , pass by without recording upon oar minutes how greatly we regret fche Prince ' s untimely death , and how deeply we sympathise with all those to whom be was near and dear . In the direct line of succession to the throne , heir to a noble
heritage , beloved and esteemed by all who knew him , betrothed and on the eve of marriage with a young and amiable Princess—all these circumstances only intensify the feeling of sorrow whioh the death of one so young and apparently so singularly blessed wonld naturally evoke . Add fco this , that he was one of ns , that he was following in the footsteps of his illustrious father onr Most Wor .
shipful Grand Master , and what more can be said P Brethren , yon will some of you , I am snre , before we part , move a resolution whioh will adequately express our sympathy and sorrow . By the death of Colonel Shadwell H . Gierke , too , onr late esteemed Graud Secretary , the Craft haa sustained a severe blow , and West Yorkshire has lost a good friend . Amiable , courteous , and thoroughly
efficient afc all points , he was able to combine the suauiter in mode with the fortiter in re in the exercise of his secretarial duties in a way which was peculiarly his own . He will long be missed at Lodge Consecrations and other Masonic functions , at whioh his charm of manner and complete mastery of ceremonial detail were so conspicuous . In his successor , Bro . Edward Letchworth , we have
got , I doubt not , nn able and efficient Mason , and it mast be oar duty , Brethren , to render him loyal and hearty support , and to endeavour to maintain that good understanding and pleasant relation whioh has so long existed between this Proviuce und fche executive of the Grand Lodge of England . To come now to home affairs . The Thomas William Taw
Presentation Fund has been successfully completed , and the opinion of our Rt . Worshipful Provincial Grand Master in relation to ifc has been expressed in most kindly and grateful terms in the letter whioh he addressed to me—a letter whioh I afc once circulated in the Proviuce , with the request that it should be read in all your Lodges . Thie , 1 trust , has beeu done , for I cannot too strongly commend that
letter to your notice . Bro . Tew , since his appointment as Depufcy in 1875 , has been unsparing in his efforts , by means of papars and addresses given at Iiif-tallation !* , Consecraiions , and Provincial Grand Lodge meetings , to instruct the biethren of this Province , and to lift Masonry np to a somewhat higher level .
Those addreasea have cost him muoh time , lubour , and research , and by consenting to a le-publicition of them , nnder the EJitorship of Brother Matthewman , Prov . Assistant Grand Secretary , he trusts , as he says in his letter , that his efforts will meet with appreciation at your bands . It will be within the recollection of many of you , I dare say , that
in my Address at Sowerby Bridgp , in October last , I endeavoured to impress upon W . Masters , Treasurers uud Secretaries tbe necessity of a prompt and conacieutuoos discharge of their dutief , particularly in relation to tbe sending in ofthe Annual Return- - . I regret extremely to be compelled to say that , notwithstanding that admonition , ou fche 31 st January last—the day upon which by
Provincial Grand Ledge By-Law 46 all these returns should have been iu our hands—no less than 23 Lodge Secretaries had failed to send in the requisite papers ; and ifc is only within the lasfc few weeks- , and by persistent application and repeated reminders , that we have been able to get the statistical information from those who are responsible for its production .
