Instruction.

Lodge to the first degree , and the seventh seotion of the lecture was worked between Bro . G . A . Knight P . M . and Bro . G . Davis P . M . It was proposed , seconded , and unanimously agreed to , that a hearty vote of thanks be recorded on the minutes for the excellent working of the W . M ., who occupied the chair for the first time .

It was also proposed that a letter of sympathy be sent to the widow of the late Bro . Morris Bosenberg P . M ., who was a member of the Earl of Carnarvon Lodge of Instruction , and this was unanimously agreed to . Bro . W . Handover was elected W . M . for next meeting .

BROMLEY ST . LEONARD LODGE , No . 1805 rilHE annual supper was held at Bro . James Gibbs' well-known house , the J Bow Bells , Bow Road , on Wednesday , 19 th ult . The chair was occupied by Bro . Ben Johnson P . M ., Bro . G . Fennell W . M . of the Mother Lodge being in tho vice-chair .

After full justice had been done to a choice dinner , served in an admirable manner by the host and Mrs . F . Thornton , the usual Loyal toasts were proposed by the Chairman , after which he proposed the Grand Lodge Officers , Present and Past , to which Bro . Tijou responded . Bro . Hambridge proposed the health of the Chairman .

Bro . Ben Johnson , in reply , thanked the Brethren for the way they had supported him in the chair that evening , and expressed a wish to vacate the presidentship of the Lodge—a suggestion that did not seem to find favour with the Brethren . The Mother Lodge was the next toast , and Bro . Fennell W . M ., in responding , referred to the good work done in the Lodge by some of the members of the Lodge of Instruction .

The Chairman then proposed the health of the Preceptor Bro . De Casseres . Bro . Ben Johnson said that they were proud to have Bro . De Casseres as their Preceptor ; he was very punctual in attendance , and carried out his duties in an able manner , with extreme kindness and ability . He said it afforded him the greatest pleasure to present him with a beautiful silver epergne on behalf of the Brethren of the Lodge . The inscription recorded thereon was as follows :

Presented to BRO . J . DE CASSERES , by the members of the Bromley St . Leonard Lodge of Instruction , No . 1805 , as a slight recognition for services rendered as Preceptor . 19 th May 1897 .

Bro . Ben Johnson , in conclusion , hoped that their Preceptor might be spared many years , in conjunction with his wife and family , to enjoy that beautiful present . The toast was received by the Brethren in an enthusiastic manner . Bro . Do Casseres , in reply , said that he wished he was ablo to give adequate expression to his feelings , so that he might sufficiently return his

grateful thanks to the Brethren for the very handsome present they had so generously presented to him that evening , also for-the kind remarks that had fallen from the lips of the worthy President . The gift he would treasure as long as he lived , and would ever look upon it as a token of the good feeling and Brotherly love evinced towards him by the members of the Lodge ; it would also remind him of the many happy and instructive evenings he had spent with the Brethren in the cause of

Freemasonry . He felt very proud of his position as Preceptor , and if his office had been a success it was due to the kind support and the interest displayed in the welfare of the Lodge by the members , and more particularly by Bro . Thornton , their able and energetic Secretary . He sincerely hoped that the Lodge would continue to flourish , and that it would be one of the principal Lodges of Instruction in the East of London . Bros . Foskett , Hall , and Graves responded to the toast of the Visitors .

Bro . F . Thornton , who was cordially received , replied to the toast of the Hon . Secretary , the chairman having remarked that they had a painstaking and model Secretary in Bro . Thornton . The meeting , which was very enjoyable , says the " East London Observer , " was brought to a close with a vote of thanks to Bro . Gibbs for the admirable manner in which he had catered , and the capital way the dinner had been served , in conjunction with Mrs . Thornton .

There is probably no monarch in the world who is so closely connected with other rulers as our own beloved Queen . So many , and so varied are the relationships of our Royal Family that most people , while convinced of the fact , have only a vague knowledge of the actual details . Recognising this , the proprietor of " Mothers and Daughters " is giving away a large chart showing the whole of the Queen ' s descendants , and the various

inter-relationships of the Royal Houses of Europe so far as they are connected with our own Sovereign . So many were disappointed in getting the splendid portrait which was given with the Royal Birthday Number of " Mothers and Daughters , " although we understand some 400 , 000 were printed , that the number for 5 th June , with which this chart is presented , and which is the second weekly number of the Magazine , should be ordered at once .

GRAND LODGE OF SCOTLAND .

A SPECIAL meeting of the Grand Lodge of Scotland was held in Freemasons' Hall , Edinburgh , on Thursday , 27 fch ult ., for the purpose of adopting an address to be presented to the Queen . The Grand Master Lord Saltoun presided , Bro . J . Dalrymple Duncan acted as Senior Grand Warden , and Major J . P . Allan was Junior Grand Warden .

The Grand Master said he was sure that not only those present but the whole of the Masonic body both in this country and in the dependencies , who held from Grand Lodge , would agree to the following address with enthusiasm , congratulating Her Majesty on this most auspicious occasion :

UNTO THE QUEEN'S MOST EXCELLENT MAJESTY . MOST GRACIOUS SOVEREIGN , —We , your Majesty ' s faithful , devoted , and loyal subjects , Alexander , Lord Saltoun , Grand Master Mason ; Sir Charles Dalrymple , Baronet , M . Grand Lodge of Scotland , for ourselves and on behalf of the Ancient Fraternity of Freemasons under the Scottish Constitution at home , in India , the Colonies , and in foreign parts , have much gratification in offering to your Majesty our sincere and hearty congratulations on the completion of your sixty years reign over this great Empire , of which your anoient kingdom of Scotland forms a part .

In presenting their congratulations on your Majesty ' s accession to the . Throne of your Royal ancestors , our predecessors had the fullest assurance from your Majesty ' s eminent virtues and qualifications that the sceptre had descended to a Princess who would wield it for her own honour , and for the glory and happiness of a loyal , free , and faithful people .

That that assurance has in the course of your Majesty ' s unprecedentedly long reign been signally realised is a source of deepest thankfulness to the Great Architect of the Universe , through whose divine favour you have so successfully ruled over the destinies of your subjects , and built up an Empire on a basis that has withstood the vicissitudes of time , and has promoted order and tranquillity throughout your vast dominions .

Our ardent and humble prayer to the Almighty is that He will shield your Majesty from all harm , crown you with every blessing , and prolong your reign in health , happiness , and prosperity . Given under our hand and seal in Grand Lodge assembled , this 27 th day of May 1897 . SALTOUN . Grand Master Mason .

D . MURRAY : LYON , Grand Secretary . On the motion of the Grand Master , seconded by Bro . Christie , the address was adopted with acclamation , and the Grand Secretary was instructed to forward it to the Secretary for Scotland for presentation . The National Anthem was then played on the grand organ , and the proceedings terminated . — ' * Scotsman . "

Congratulations To Bro. Rogers.

CONGRATULATIONS TO BRO . ROGERS .

A MEETING of the supporters of Bro . E . Rogers P . G . S . was held immediately after the election of members for the Board of General Purposes on Wednesday last , for the purpose of congratulating him on his success , when his health was proposed by Bro . W . M . Stiles P . G . Treasurer , who , in the course of a few words , said they all heartily congratulated Bro .

Rogers on his election , aud hoped he would do his duty . He might rest assured that upon his so doing would depend his future election : at the same time it was almost needless for him to say so , as it was well known by his friends present that he would worthily discharge the work required of him and next year would have not only their support , but that of Brethren who , at present , knew him by repute only .

Bro . Rogers , in expressing his warmest thanks to his supporters , said he had always used his . utmost endeavour to carry out that which he had undertaken . In the proud position in Freemasonry he had just attained he should bear out what he said , and he hoped to meet them all that time next year on a similar occasion .

THE Editor of the " Magazine of Art" having obtained from Her Majesty the gracious permission ( never before accorded ) to set before the public the Queen ' s Treasures of Art in the Royal Palaces , the first of the special articles appear in the June part , which is enlarged in order that special prominence may be given to this contribution .
