was passed to the brethren of Lodge No . 12 , Winchester , somo of whom are specified by name for their exertions in behalf of the Craft , in very difficult circumstances . On the 27 th of tho same month , it was announced that " the present proprietors of this Lodge House , Had offered to tho different Lodges the three upper rooms , at tho rent of £ 30 per annum , and tho offer was accepted . Ifc was reported at the

same meeting that Bro . Jos . Dean had offered a plot of ground " 40 ft . in front and 130 foot iu depth , for one penny per annum ground rent for ever , provided the Freemasons will accept the same . " It is almost needless to say the offer is accepted , and a vote of thanks is nnanimonsly given to Bro . Dean . Certain trustees are appointed to receive the deed of trust , and a collection of money is recommended

forthwith . " Ifc being" further " reported to tho Lodge that onethird of tho purchase money arising from tho sale of tho Lodge House , will bo applied to a charitable purpose" ordered that tho II . W . G . Master Bro . Ball and Bro . Humphreys bo a Committee to wait upon tho late proprietaries , and inform them of our intention of building a now Lodge house , and solicit from them a preference in their intended

donation . " This request , however , wo havo already shown was not complied with , as the one-third was handed over to tho City of Philadelphia , to bo applied to tho formation of a fund for supplying the poor with coal . Ifc will , likewise bo borne in mind thafc tho House thus sold was the property of Lodgo No . 1 ( Moderns ) . On the Gth December the fee simple of tho

ground was duly presented to the trustees , who in their turn handed to Bro . Dean a declaration of their trust . It was also agreed unani . mously that the new building should bo called " The Grand Lodge House " of Pennsylvania , and arrangements wero made for tho continuance of tho trusteeship , as well as for ' procuring tho necessary funds to erect tho building . On Sfc . John ' s Day , after it had been

resolved to grant warrants for constituting two now Lodges , one at Winnsborongh , South Carolina , and tho other at Eeading , Pa ., tho customai'y election of Grand officers was proceeded with , Bro . Adcock being re-appointed Grand Master . A petition for a warrant for a Lodge at Pittsburgh was granted , and the warrant was signed . Ifc was also agreed that a letter bo prepared and " sent to tho

different Modern Lodges , expressive of onr wishes of a general attachment and union . " On the 3 rd February 178 G , application for a charter from some brethren at Capo Francois , written in French , and addressed to General Washington as Grand Master of all America , was taken into consideration , and it was resolved to grant one . A motion to the effect that , as the Grand Lodge had announced to the

other Grand Lodges on the continent , that its subordinate connection with the Grand Lodge of England ( Ancients ) no longer existed , tho words declaratory of such subordination should no longer be inserted in tho warrants , was postponed . On tho 27 th March , a circular letter was ordered to be sent to all tho Lodges in the jurisdiction , requesting their attendance , either by their proper officers or by

deputation , in writing , afc the September Communication , as ifc was resolved to consider at that meeting the propriety of erecting themselves into a Grand Lodge independent of Great Britain . The meeting was held accordingly on the 25 th September , twelve Lodges being represented , and Grand Master Adcock occupying'the chair ; and ifc was resolved unanimously , " That this Grand Lodge is , aud ought to be , a Grand

Lodge independent of Great Britain or any other authority whatever , and that they are nofc under any ties whatever to any other Grand Lodge except those of brotherly love and affection , which they will always be happy to cultivate and preserve with all Lodges throughout the Globe , " and there is added to the minutes of this important record , the remark " This Lodge , acting by virtue of a warrant from the

Grand Lodge of England , was closed for ever . " The day following a Grand Convention comprising thirteen Lodges was held , and it was resolved then and there to form themselves into a Grand Lodge , " to be called the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania , and Masonic jurisdiction thereunto belonging , to be held in Philadelphia ; and thafc tho late Grand Officers of Pennsylvania continue to be the Grand Officers of

Pennsylvania , invested with all the powers , jurisdictions , preeminence , and authority thereunto belonging , till the usual time of the next election ; and thafc tho Grand Lodge and the particular Lodges govern themselves by the Pules and Eegulations heretofore established till other Eules and Eegulations shall be adopted . " Bro . Adcock was the Chairman of this Convention , and his signature

as such , as well as of those of twenty-four other brethren are appended to this minute . The same day , Avith the same brethren present as before , G . Lodge was opened , and after transacting certain business , it was agreed to appoint a Committee to form a Warrant to be granted to the Lodges under the jurisdiction of this Grand Lodge , and Brothers J . B . Smith and Thos . D . Smith were chosen to form snch

Committee , which was further charged to send a letter to tho Grand Lodge of England , taking a formal leave of them . With the announcement that" the Lodge closed in good harmony , and adjourned to this day three weeks , " the minutes of the first meeting of tho new Independent G . Lodge of Pennsylvania ends , and so , likewise , does the first part of the History of Freemasonry in this State . It only

remains for us to congratulate the Committee charged with publication of this important and highly interesting work on the admirable manner in which , so far , they have fulfilled their duty . The work is a credit to them and to the printer , indeed to every one who has had a hand in its production . We shall await with some impatience the appearance of succeeding numbers ; bufc what is still more to the

point , we hope the brethren nofc only of this , but of other jurisdictions likewise , will give practical proof of the pleasure they feel in noting the publication of one more historical Masonic work by sending in their names and remitting their moneys as subscribers . Such a work involves both great labour and heavy expense , and we trust tho brethren will fulfil their parfc in the capacity of purchasers as

handsomely as the Library Committee have fulfilled theirs in compiling , and Messrs . Sherman and Co . of Philadelphia in publishing it . We , further , thank tho Committee for having afforded ns the opportunity of reviewing their labours , and wo assure them the task has been attended with a very considerable amount both of profit and pleasure .
