On the evening of New Year ' s Day , Her Majesty , accompanied by her daughter and ladies in waiting , was present in the Steward's room and Steward's hall , ancl distributed gifts to the upper and under servants of the household . The Duke of Connaught has left Dublin for
London , and has since gone on a visit to his brother at Sandringham . His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales has been paying sundry visits , and with the Princess and their children was present at a grand meet of the Norfolk hunt . It is expected that the Prince will visit the Duke of Hamilton at Hamilton Castle on the 14 th inst . The Mansion House Indian Famine Relief Fund has reached the expected half million sterling , and the Committee have received a letter of congratulation from Her Majesty . This , however , by no means represents the total of the subscriptions , which are said to have amounted from all sources to something like £ 800 , 000 .
A deputation waited on the Earl of Carnarvon on Wednesday afternoon , on the subject of the troubles which have broken out at the Capo . His Lordship entered very fully into the extent and origin of these disturbances , and seemed hopeful that matters would be set straight at no distant time .
He laid some stress on the advantages of union , referring for an illustration to the well-known story of tho bundle of faggots . As a matter of course , the meeting did not terminate without some reference to the leading topic of

the Prime Minister on Wednesday afternoon . All the members were present , several of them having travelled specially into town for the purpose . A second Council was held the day following . A Miss Ryland who has already presented the town of
Birmingham with two public parks , together comprising over a hundred acres of woodland , and has likewise expended the sum of £ 10 , 000 on laying out and embellishing one of them , has expressed a wish to present £ 4 , 000 towards laying out the other , and her very kind offer has
been accepted by the Town Council . This lady ' s benefaction to tho capital of the hardware industries is to the extent of close on £ 100 , 000 . An appeal , in which several well-known philanthropists ,
among whom tho name of the Baroness Burdett-Coutfcs stands prominent , is being made to the public for tho purpose of establishing a " Children ' s Toy Fund , " and imong the earliest contributors are the Queen and the Princess Beatrice .
