members of the Lodge , were the following Grand Officers : —Bros . Colonel Shadwell H . Gierke Grand Secretary , J . A . Encker , P . de Lande Long , and E . F . Gonld Past Grand Deacons , J . L . Thomas Past Grand Assistant Director of Ceremonies , ancl W . Ganz Pasfc Grand Organist . A large number of Grand Stewards and Pasfc Grand Stewards were also present , and visitors from the Grand

Ganz Past Organist of the Lodge , and glees , & c , were sung by Bro . Stedman ' a choir boys and others . The Eoyal Somerset House and Inverness Lodge ante-dates the

Grand Lodge of England , and its early records show thafc in the lasfc , and afc tbe commencement of the present centnry , many of fche nobility belonged to this Lodge , while , wifch fche Antiquity , it is still peculiar , inasmuch as it acts without a warrant from Grand Lodge , doing so " by immemorial constitution . "

ROYAL UNION LODGE OF INSTRUCTION , No . 382 .

IN accordance with an announcement we made lasfc week , the members of this Lodge of Instrnction assembled on Monday evening , at six o ' clock , afc tho Chequers Hotel , Uxbridge , when the Efc . Wor , fche Provincial Grand Master for Middlesex , Sir Francis Burdett , honoured the brethren with a visit . The chair was taken b y Bro . H . E . Tucker , Preceptor of fche Lodge of Instruction ; he was supported by Bros . E . Cotton S . W ., E . J . Acworth 1612 J . W ., Garard

S . D ., Eowles J . D ., Andrews P . M . I . G ., Dnffin Tyler . Lodge waa opened in due form , and minntes of previous meeting were read , confirmed and signed . The ceremony of initiation was then rehearsed , Bro . Fleming being the candidate . At this stage of the proceedings the Prov . Grand Master arrived ; he was accompanied by Bro . J . Sampson Peirce Junior Grand Deacon of England , Bro . W .

Burdett 1293 , and others , and was formally received and saluted according to his rank . Bro . Tucker tendered the Master ' s gavel , but Sir Francis directed him to proceed with the business . Bro . Tncker then announced thafc Bro . Morgan would read a short Paper on " Women in Freemasonry , " which was immediately done , much to the gratification of all present . Sir Francis expressed his

appreciation of Bro . Morgan ' s efforts , and said lie could personally testify to the accuracy of the statements made iu reference to his relative the Baroness Bnrdetfc-Coutts and the Lodge ( "No . 1278 ) which bore her name . He then addressed the brethren , and referred to the fact thafc their Lodge being situate in an extreme part of the Province , whero access was somewhat difficult for him—unless he came throngh

the metropolis—had doubtless in some measure prevented him being with them so frequently as he could have desired . However , he had a lively and p leasant recollection that the members of the Eoyal Union Lodge had taken a very active part at the time when he was nominated to preside over the Province of Middlesex . He was intensely gratified with the way in which the duties of Freemasonry

were being conducted here , and looked forward to increased facilities for lessening at no very distant date the time the journey would take . Sir Francis expressed his regret that his other engagements would not permit of a long stay on the present , but he should be much gratified in meeting the members on a future occasion . Tho E . W . Prov . G . Master soon after left the Lodge amid fcho applause

of all prcpciifc . The brethren were thon called off for refreshment . On resuming their Blasonic duties , on the motion of Bro . Tucker , ifc was unanimously agreed that a vote of thanks , to be recorded on the minntes , be sent to tlie Prov . Grand Master , thanking him for attending . Tho case of a distressed Brother was then brought before the Lodge , aud a subscription was made by tho brethren fin * the relief of

immediate necessities . Bro . E . J . Acworth , of Ealing , w . o on several occasions has rendered signal service to the brethren , was then elected an honorary member of tho Lodge of Instruction . Bro . Pasfc Master Andrews rose , he said that all present could but have Leon edified and instructed by the interesting Paper read on this occasion by their esteemed honorary member , Bro . Morgan .

He ( i ! ro . Andrews ) had not hitherto had an opportunity of listening to any of Brother Morgan ' s lectures , but he was much struck with the ability they displayed . He had great pleasure in proposing a vote of thanks for the service rendered . In acknowledging this compliment Bro . Morgan explained

that he was indebted in the main to Bro . 1 . B . Wh y tehead , of York , for tho material from which he had prepared this paper . Bro . Wh ytehead and many other distinguished Craftsmen wifch whom he was acquainted wonld be ready to assist any brother who felt inclined to prepare similar papers , which he was convinced would be equally
