CONSECRATION OF THE SIR GEORGE ELLIOT CHAPTER .

ON Tuesday afternoon , the 24 th ultimo , the consecration of tho Sir George Elliot Chapter took placo at the Masonic Hall , Working Street , Cardiff . The Most Excellent the Prov . BRO . GRIFFITHS SMITH , P . G . A . D . C

THE death of Brother Griffiths Smith was announced last week . Brother Smith was initiated in the Emulation Lodge , No . 21 , in which Lodge he filled the chair , and represented it on the Board of Grand Stewards . He joined

the Fitzroy Lodge in 1870 , and filled the chair there in 1875 . He was exalted to the Royal Arch degree in Cyrua Chapter , No . 21 , on 28 th January 1868 , and acted as First Principal in 1875 . In 1884 he received the collar of

Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies , and a few days later was appointed 3 rd Grand Standard Bearer of Supreme Grand Chapter . He was a member of the Board of General Purposes , and one of its Finance Committee from

1872 to 1875 ; he was a Vice-President of the Colonial Board for several years , and was also elected member of the Board of Benevolence . He was a Vice-Patron of the Girls' School , and had served ten Stewardships on

its behalf ; a Life Governor of the Boys' School and the Benevolent Institution . Brother Griffiths Smith had also done excellent service on the Committees of the respective Institutions .

BRO . WILLIAM OLLIS . THE funeral of the late Bro . William Ollis , of Stoke , took

place at the Plymouth Cemetery , on 27 th ult ., and was attended by a number of friends and acquaintances of the deceased . The coffin bore the inscription : — " William Ollis , died 23 rd January 1888 . Aged 62 years . " There

were somo handsome wreaths . The deceased gentleman was a P . M . of Sincerity Craft Lodge , 189 ; P . P . G . S . D . ; P . M . of Sincerity Mark ; P . W . C . N , in the Ark Mariners ; aud at the time of his decease held the office of H . in Sincerity Royal , Arch Chapter .

BRO . JAMES SMITH

Ou the 31 st ult ., the remains of the late Bro . James Smith , Ivirkdale Lodge , 1756 , were interred at Anfield Cemetery . Deceased , who had been for several years a

member , was very highly respected . The service was conducted by Bro . Dr . Hyde , Chaplain 1086 . A number of wreaths were placed on the coffin , supplemented by one of exquisite beauty from the brethren of the Kirkdale Lodge .

rjlHB Earl of Carnarvon Lodgo , No . 2124 ( E . G . ) , accorded their -ft- name-father an enthusiastic reception at the CollingwoodTown Hall , Victoria , on Saturday , the 11 th December . Tho Worshipful Master , Bro . James Page , summoned his Lodgo to meet at noon . A large number of visitors from other Lodges wero present by invitation . The Grand Lodge of Victoria was represented by its principal

Officers in full regalia , althongh Bro . Sir . W . J . Clarke , Bart ., the Provincial Grand Master , was unavoidably absent . The Past Masters of tho Lodge conducted their illustiioua visitor , th / j Right Honourable the Earl of Carnarvon , i ro G . M . of England , to the body ofthe Lodge , and to a seat of honour at the right of the W . M ., who on behalf of his Lodge

accorded their distinguished guest a hearty greeting . Past Master Bro . Bailey delivered an able and appropriate address , at the same time presenting the Earl , on behalf of the Lodge , with a superbly finished album as a souvenir of his visit . The album contained a beautifully engrossed address , views of the Collingwood Town Hall , and of other

subjects of interest m tho city and colony , together with photos of the Master , Officer .- ' , and Members of the Lodge . The Earl of Carnarvon expressed his very high gratification at the splendid reception aud appropriate' presentation . The brethren adjourned "from labour to refreshment " in j > . larger llall . The banquet not being
