THE usual monthly Council Meeting was held on Friday , 26 th ult ., at Freemasons' Hall . Bro . Richard Eve was in the chair , and among those present were Bros . Fairchild , Stephens , J . J . Thomas , C . W . Hudson ,

Dr . W . H . Kernpster , J . E . Le Feuvre , H . Pritchard , J . Glass , J . W . Burgess , John Strachan , H . P . Hodgson , George Motion , Arthur Adams , H . Woodrow , George Cook , Harold Imray and W . H . Saunders .

After the usual routine business had been taken , a resolution of sympathy with Mrs . J . L . Mather , on the death of her husband , was passed . Bro . Eve ' s notice of motion to increase tbie salary of the Head Master from £ 525 to £ 630 was seconded by Bro . Le Feuvre and carried nem . con .

THE following is the result of the South Kensington Examinations June 1895 ; Practical Plane and Solid Geometry , —14 Certificates . Geology , —8 Certificates . Mathematics and Drawing , —The results of these Sections are not yet received .

ALPASS BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION .

AT a meeting of the Sub-Committee of the Festival in aid of this Fund the chairman , Bro . Robert Wylie Deputy Provincial Grand Master and Past G . D . Eng . announced that Bro . Col . Baldwin , J . P ., P . Prov . S . G . W . and Prov . Grand J . had

consented to preside at the Festival , to be held at the Prince of Wales Hotel , Southport , on Wednesday , the 16 th of October next , and he was pleased to say the arrangements were progressing satisfactorily .

William Morris as H , William Corder Aiken as J , and six others for a Chapter to be attached to the Tyrian Lodge , No . 1628 , to be called " The Tyrian Chapter , " and to meet at the Masonic Hall , Bundaberg , Queensland .

From Companions Charles Jolly as Z , Thomas Ringrose as H , John George Hammond as J , and fifteen others for a Chapter to be attached to the Royal Victorian Jubilee Lodge , No . 2184 , to be called "The Victorian Chapter , " and to meet at the Phoenix Hotel , Rainham , in the county of Essex .

The foregoing Petitions being regular , the Committee recommend that the prayers thereof be respectively granted . The Committee have likewise received Memorials , with extracts of Minutes , for permission to remove the following Chapters : — ' The Chapter of Israel , " No . 1502 , from the Masonic Hall , Hope Street , Liverpool , to Freemasons' Hall , Eastbank Street , Southport .

" The St . Aubyn Chapter , " No . 954 , from the Ebrington Masonic Hall , to the St . Aubyn Masonic Hall , Moon Street , Morice Town , Devonport . " The Hamer Chapter , '' No . 1393 , from the Masonic Hall , Hope Street , to the Alexandra Hotel , Dale Street , Liverpool . " The Royal Union Chapter , No . 382 , from the Chequers Hotel , Uxbridge , to the Albany Hotel , Twickenham .

" The Mount Moriah Chapter , " No . 143 , from the Albion Hotel , Aldersgate Street , to tho Criterion Restaurant , Piccadilly . The Committee have to report that the Priory Chapter , No . 1863 , Tynembuth , having ceased to meet , they recommend that the Chapter be summoned to show cause why it should not be removed from the Roll of Chapters .

The Freemasons of the north will be pleased to know that the last stone of the Masonic Hall in Pilgrim Street , Newcastle , has been laid by Brother F . F . Schnitger , says the " Newcastle Chronicle . "

Upwards of eleven hundred new members were registered under the Scottish Constitution during the quarter ending 20 th July , as shown by the accounts for that period , prepared by the Grand Cashier .

Dr . Longhurst P . P . Grand Organist Kent , the well-known Organist of Canterbury Cathedral , who has been celebrating bis golden wedding , has been connected with the Cathedral since 1823 . He was first admitted as a chorister , and in course of

time became lay clerk and assistant organist , and , finally , organist and master of the choristers . His elder brother , John Alexander Longhurst , was early in the century a popular boy

singer at Covent Garden when under the management of the Kembles . Both John Alexander Longhurst and his surviving brother , the present organist of Canterbury Cathedral , have been successful teachers of singing .
