GROVE LODGE , No . 410 .

A MEETING was held on Saturday , the 19 th nit ., at the Snn Hotel , K"ingston-on-Thame 8 . Although this was the first regular meeting since the installation of the W . M ., and notwithstanding an urgent appeal had been made by the Secretary that all members shonld make an effort to be present , the meeting -was not well attended . This may in a measure be accounted for from the fact that

several other important events were celebrated the same day . The paucit y of members on this occasion , perhaps , added to the comfort ° f those who had the privilege of attending , as Brother Bond ' s Masonic Hall was not inconveniently crowded . In the unavoidable absence of tho W . M . Rro . T . Enst . ann Smith . Rio . Charles Greenwood

jnn . P . M , p . p . G . Eegistrar and Acting P . G . Secretary Surrey acted as W . M . The labours of the evening were conducted in that admirable manner which characterizes this old and distinguished Lodge , and which justly entitles it to the prominent position it holds in the Craft . A sum of £ 5 5 s was voted out of Lodge funds to the list of Bro . "• Greenwood jun ., who acts as Steward for the Boys' School this year . After the Lodge was closed the Brethren adjourned to the tiotel , where a very excellent and recherche banquet was served , at

whioh Bro . H . J . P . Dumas P . G . Deacon of England , P . P . G . Warden of Surrey , and an old P . M . of the Lodge presided . The usual Loyal and Masonic toasts were given and responded to . In proposing the health of the R . VV . P . G . M ., the D . P . G . M ., and the rest of the P . G . Offioers of Surrey preseut and past , Bro . FT . J . P . Dumas , in one

of those brilliant efforts of post-prandial rhetoric for whioh ho is so justly celebrated , referred in the most glowing terms to the high esteem and love iu which their B . W . P . G . M . General Brownrigg was held by all Surrey Masons . He also referred to the great work done for Masoury in general , and to its prosperous condition and

rapid increase in the province of Surrey nnder the General s fostering and benign rule . The P . G . M . was ably supported by an old P . M . the Treasurer of the Grove Lodge , Bro . O . Greenwood sen ., who has succeeded Bro . Arnold as Deputy Prov . G . M ., and who is admirably fitted to fill so important a position . Bro . Lister

P . M . and P . P . G . Superintendent of Works , in responding for the Past Masters of the Lodge , said that amongst his colleague P . M . ' a of the Lodge were brethren who not only held high honours in Masonry , bnt had done signal service to the Craft by their generous and constant support to the Masonic Charities , and in upholding the

glorious traditions and principles of Freemasonry . Brother Lister remarked that he and the other P . M . M . had only jn 3 t entered on his year of office , aud as he was not then

amongst them , Bro . Lister wonld not touch upon certain advioe whioh as a P . M . he thought himself justified in tendering , but whioh he would reserve for another occasion . Bro . H . F . Dumas S . W . responded on behalf of th'i Offioera , and , emulating his respected

father , gave a most eloquent , lucid , and careful exposition of what he considered to be the first duties of an Officer in a Lodge . The Tyler ' s toast terminated the banquet . The meeting was declared by those present to be the most enjoyable one of the present session .

THE installation meeting was held at the Bridge House Hotel , London Bridge , on Tuesday , 22 nd nit . The retiring Master , Bro . James Austin occupied the chair ; he was supported by the Officers of the Lodge , and a numerous gathering of Members and the following Visitors : Bros . Hanson P . M . 59 , Coubro P . M . 1365 , Blackburn P . M .. 1365 , Foster P . M . 1441 , Beck P . M . 1853 , Gore 169 ,

Andrews 177 , Symes 534 , Peacock 1327 , Wynne 1448 , Canning 1472 , Hurford 167 , & c & o . After the Lodge had been formally opened , Bro . Knibb was raised , the ceremony being impressively and ably performed by the retiring W . M . The W . M . elect , Bro . J . L . W . Bertolle , was then presented , and in due course inducted into the

chair , the ceremony being performed with all solemnity , in a mas . terly manner by Bro . Austin , reflecting the highest credit upon him . The following brethren were appointed Officers : Bunker S . W ., Wells J . W ., Wright Treas ., Smith Sec , Block S . D ., Brady J . D ., Tarrant I . G ., Beecroft D . C , Dunlop S ., Dane A . S ., Gray A . S ., and

Walkley Tyler . At the close of the installation business the ballot was opened for Mr . John Lewis Drake , of Gloucester Road , Camberwell , who desired an insig ht into the mysteries of our Order . He was proposed and seconded by Bros . Dunlop and Dane respectively . The ballot being favourable to the candidate , his initiation was proceeded

with , and the elocution and fluency displayed by the newly-installed Master in the working of this interesting ceremony gives promise of able and excellent ruling during the year he has just entered upon . The Lodge was subsequently closed , and the brethren repaired to another room , where an excellent banquet awaited thom , presided over

by the Worshipful Master , who in due course proposed the various toasts usual on these occasions . The toast of the Worshipful Master was given in eulogistic terms by the I . P . M ., who spoke of the ability Bro . Bertolle had displayed , not only that evening , but in the various offices he had successively occupied in the Lodge . In reply ,

the Worshipful Master , after thanking the brethren for the reception of the toast , assured them that when he first became connected with Freemasonry , he never entertained the idea that he should attain to that high position ; it was now the proudest moment of his life . With the assistance of his Officers he should endeavour to

fulfil the duties of his position to the very best of his ability , and when his year of office should expire it would be a great consolation to know that he had given satisfaction for the way in which he had fulfilled those duties , and that the brethren of the Lodge shonld never have reason to regret their choice . He had now a very pleasant

duty to perform , that was to present to Bro . Austin , in the name of the brethren of the Southern Star Lodge , the handsome P . M . ' s jewel which they had unanimously voted him , as a mark of their esteem and appreciation of his valaable services during his year of office . Bra . Austin then briefly replied , - he promised he would

continue to do all in his power to enhance the welfare of the Lodge . The various Officers were afterwards complimented , and the proceedings were brought to a conclusion iu tho usual way . The evening was spent in the most enjoyable manner , the harmony whioh interspersed the speeches and toast 3 being contributed by Bro 3 . Etheredge , T . Bertolle , Dnnlop and others .
