Quarterly Communication Of United Grand Lodge.

BURGOYNE LODGE . No . 902

A MEETING of this Lodge was held at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet Street , London , on Monday , 27 th February , under the presidency of the W . M . Bro . Charles Castell . Lodge was opened at 4-15 , when the minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed . Bros . Pillinger , Leary and Larter were passed to the degree of F . C . The ballot was brought into requisition for Mr . Walter Robert Gadd ,

who was proposed as a candidate for our mysteries by the W . M ., seconded by Brother Jefferys P . M . and Secretary . The result was favourable to the candidate , and he was regularly initiated into the Order . Bro . Sprinks was then raised to the snblime degree . All the ceremonies were carefully and impressively conducted by the

W . M ., who waa ably supported by the following Officers : —Bros . J . C . Cross S . W ., W . Smith J . W ., H . C . Jefferys P . M . Secretary , George Gabb P . M . Treasurer , W . Batty D . C ., J . Beddoes S . D ., E . S . White J . D ., H . James Organist , John Gilbert Tyler j P . M . 's S . J . Byng , W . Wilkins , R . N . Field and H . A . Pocockalso supported the W . M ., while the following is a list of the Visitors present : —Bros .

W . Lestocq W . M . 1319 , F . Dray 2021 , G . Powell W . M . 889 ,

D . Ferguson P . M . 1793 , W . Drewett W . M . 889 , Morgan P . M . 211 , E . A . Mitchell , Louis Beck P . P . G . Organist Middlesex , J . W . Thomas P . M . 1641 , & o ., Williams P . M . l 73 , S . G . Bonner , P . A . Hornburg 8 ( Norway ) . In the course of the routine work , two candidates for initiation were proposed , for whom the ballot will be taken

at the next meeting . An old member of the Lodge tendered his resignation , in consequence of change of residence ; this was accepted , with regret . The Worshipful Master referred to the fact that he was working a Stewardship on behalf of the Benevolent Institution , the Festival of whioh would take place two days later .

He forcibly impressed npon the brethren the urgency of the appeal he was then making on behalf of that Institution . He stated that later in the evening he should give the brethren a practical opportunity of exercising their Charity . Bro . Castell ' s appeal was so far successful , that he was enabled to take up to the Festival , later in the week , a

sum of £ 30 , as the contribution of his Lodge to the funds of the Benevolent Institution . Notice of motion was given that the Lodge rote ten guineas towards the Girls' School Centenary Festival , which motion will be considered at the next meeting . Bro . E . Floydd was elected as a re-joining member of the Lodge , after which good

wishes were tendered , and the Lodge was closed . A banquet followed , and at its conclusion the Worshipful Master submitted the customary toasts . He said it waa not his intention to occupy any great length of time over the various sentiments . Speaking of the Queen , he said that the mind of Her Majesty was much exercised

at the critical condition of her son-in-law , the Crown Prince of Germany . He ( Bro . Castell ) had that day received the agenda paper for the next Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge , and foremost on that document appeared a proposition , in the name of their respeoted Deputy Grand Master , which would adequately convey , he

felt assured , the sentiments of tbe Craft in regard to this , he might almost say , national calamity . The second toast needed no words from him . All knew bow zealously the Prince of Wales performed his Masonic functions . This year would be celebrated the silver wedding of the Royal couple , and Craftsmen all wished them many happy

returns of the day . After the Grand Officers had been duly honoured , Bro . JefTerys P . M . proposed the health of the Worshipful Master . But for the state of his health Bro . Castell would have presided over the Lodge last year ; now all the members congratulated him on his restoration : he was worthily fulfilling his functions . He

was a constant attendant in the Lodge's behalf at the councils of the Craft , and had displayed tact and ability in the conduct of his work in the Lodge . In reply , the Worshipful Master acknowledged the kindness of Bro . Jefferys , and congratulated himself on being restored to health , so far as to be enabled to attend to the affairs of the Lodge . He trusted that when it came for him to hand the Warrant down it

would be as unsullied as when it was entrusted to his keeping . The initiates they had had during the period of his Mastership wera men , he felt , who would do credit to the Lodge , which at the present time stood well . He ventured to hope his efforts would be appreciated , and that he should prove his ability to " rule the roost" in a

kindly spirit , and in a way that would give pleasure to all . Before sitting down he would propose the health of the Initiate , who was a very old friend , and one whose antecedents might lead them to expect he would shine as a Freemason . In reply Bro . Gadd said it was a pleasure for him to be present . What men wanted in this

world was sympathy and brotherhood , and as far as he knew Freemasonry supplied both . He did not regret tbe step he had taken ; the initiatory ceremony had deeply impressed him ; he was not entirely a stranger to Freemasonry , inasmuch as his father was a Mason of upwards of fifty years' standing and his brothers were also

in the Order . His introduction into Masonry that night bad caused considerable pleasure to the various members of his family , as well as to himself . Bro . Gadd concluded a capital speech by thanking the brethren for the compliment they had paid him . The next toast waa that of the Visitors , and replies were elicited from Bros .

Hornburgh , a native of Christiama , Morgan , Back , Thomas , Drewett , and B ' erguson . Brother Wilkins responded for the Past Masters , expressing gratification at seeing so many members of that body present . All had the interest of tbe Lodge at heart , and would do what they could to advance its welfare . In speaking of the Treasurer and

Secretary , Bro . Castell said they were both excellent Officers , ever ready to perform any task in the interests of the Lodge . Brother Geo . Gabb ( Treasurer ) , in his reply , said it was gratifying to know that the Lodge was financially now in a better condition than at any period within his knowledge . He thanked the brethren for the

confidence tbey had reposed in him by electing him as their Treasurer . Brother JeiFcrya followed . He was pleased to think his services were appreciated by the members of tho Lodge . Whatever he undertook became essentially a labour of love to him . After the remaining Officers had been complimented , and the necessity of attending the Quarterly Co ^ Eracicstioin of Grand Lodgo had been
