The Institutions, &C.

THE INSTITUTIONS , & c .

Royal Masonic Institution for Girls . THE date for the 106 th Anniversary Festival of this Institution has been fixed by the M . W . Pro Grand Master as Wednesday , the 9 th of May , and it is hoped the event will prove of the most satisfactory character .

We have already expressed our gratification at the fact of the Earl of Lathom consenting to preside on this occasion , and anticipate the most hearty support from the Craft generally , but more particularly from his own

Province of West Lancashire , over which , as is known to our readers , he has now presided - for a period of twenty-one years . In view of the continuous calls made upon this Charity , and the very satisfactory results that

attend its operations , it is hoped that the hands of the executive may be considerably strengthened as the result of the meeting in May , in regard to which we shall address our readers more fully at an early date—as soon

as the Festival of the Benevolent Institution , which stands first on the list , has been celebrated . Meanwhile we are aware that brethren are working hard on behalf of both of these Festivals , and also for that of the Boys

School , and are vieing with each other in friendly rivalry as to who shall secure the largest list . Such rivalry is most healthy , and to it must be attributed much of the success that attends the annual Festivals of the Masonic Institutions .

Church Service In The City.

CHURCH SERVICE IN THE CITY .

AS might have been expected , considering the rarity of such an occasion , there was a goodly attendance at the Church of St . James , Garlickhithe , on Thursday of last week , when a service was held in aid of the Boyal Masonic Benevolent Institution . The service was in

connection with Whittington Lodge , No . 862 , and members attended in the clothing of the Craft , being permitted to do so by a special dispensation from the Grand Master . The service was conducted by Bro . Rev . H . D .

Macnamara ( rector of St . James ' s ) , who was assisted by Bro . Rev . D . H . Heywood , Bro . Bev . J . H . Smith ( S . W . Alliance Lodge ) , and Bro . Rev . J . H . Rose ( rector of St . James ' s , Clerkenwell ) . Among those who attended the

service were Colonel Davis Sewell P . G . S . B ., C . H . Oliver P . P . G . J . W . Monmouth , and J . Mason P . G . S . D ! Middlesex . A short but an eloquent and highly appropriate sermon was preached by Bro . Rev . H . R . Cooper

Smith , D . D ., P . G . C . ( rector of Basingstoke ) . Taking for his text , " Sirs , ye are brethren" ( Acts vii ., 26 ) , he referred to the feeling that existed in the days when these words were spoken , and said that bis hearers ought to

look upon themselves as brothers from a double point of view—both as Christians and as Freemasons . There had been , and there was at the present time , a vast amount of misconception with regard to Masonry .

Some there were who thought that Masonry in itself was a kind of religion , and therefore that it was incompatible , if not absolutely antagonistic to Christianity . In fact , a bishop of his own church had held up Masonry almost to

execration on this account . But , said the preacher although Masonry was not a religion in itself , it presupposed a belief in God . The unbeliever could not be admitted within its pale . Further , Masons recognised

the existence of the brotherly tie binding them to all mankind , and endeavoured to extend their guiding principles of benevolence and charity to all outside , as well as to those belonging to the Craft . Looking at the congregation , and seeing in his imagination the large
