• a ***************** IN view of the fresh laurels that " The Eternal City" has earned for Mr . Hall Caine , the new story from his pen that commences in the Christmas number of the " Windsor Magazine " will be awaited with deep interest by that novelist ' s large circle of readers . The tale , which is entitled " Unto the third and fourth
generation , " is a fascinating love stozy , but at the same time deals with one of the most tremendous problems that humanity has to face . In the ordinary course the story would have run as a serial in several monthly numbers of the magazine , but by special arrangement it will be issued in two large instalments in the Christmas and January issues of the "Windsor . "
A beautifully framed portrait of Bro . W . Spicer , J . P ., P . M . P . P . S . G . D ., first W . M . of the Whitley Lodge , No . 2821 , was presented to the members on the occasion of the regular meeting of the Lodge , held on Friday of last week at the Masonic Hall , Whitley .

Lodge was opened in the second degree , and Bros . J . W . Tredwen , D . Gould , A . Tinley , and C . Martin having answered the questions were entrusted and retired . The Lodge was opened in the third , and those Brethren having been re-admitted were subsequently raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason .
The Lodge was resumed to the first degree , and Bro . Edward Hitchin Smyth was presented by his father Bro . C . H . Smyth D . C , who on this occasion acted as' Senior Deacon . Having answered the questions without the slightest assistance Bro . Smyth jun . was entrusted . The Lodge was resumed to the second degree , and he was passed a Fellow Craft .
The Lodge was again resumed to the first degree , and the ballot was taken for Mr . John Goff and Mr . William Albert Trathen as candidates for initiation . It proved unanimous in their favour , and in due course they had the pleasure of being admitted as members of the Craft . The whole of the ceremonies were admirably rendered , Bro . Henry B . Bro . T . A . Rawlings proposed a gentleman for initiation at the next meeting , which proposition was heartily supported by his father , the Worshipful Master . M . ) had worked his way up from the position the initiates occupied that night , and he strongly recommended them to attend Lodges of Instruction if they also desired to progress . There they would find true fellowship , and Past Masters who would render all the assistance that was required . Once again he thanked them all for the cordial reception accorded him .
The W . M . had next the pleasure of proposing the toast of the initiates . Thev brought with them the highest of recommendations , and by the great attention they had paid to their initiation and the charge he was sure they would make excellent Brethren , and become additional ornaments to the Lodge . The W . M . called upon the Brethren to receive the toast with good Masonic fire , which was done .
Bro . W . A . Trathen thanked the W . M . and Brethren for the manner in which he had been received into the Lodge . What the W . M . had said he would never forget ; his ambition was to work his way UD to the position the W . M . occupied that day . Bro . John Goff said he was very much impressed with the ceremony , and hoped to give that satisfaction which was expected . He thanked the Brethren for having received him as a member in the Skelmersdale Lodge .
The W . M . now had very much pleasure in proposing the toast of the Visitors , and tendered them a most hearty welcome . Bro , James Smith P . M . United Mariners Lodge , No , 1598
