After the reading and conhrmation of minutes , ballots were taken for five joining members , in the persons of Bros . William John Harriman 1219 , John Stevenson 1218 , James Bent 1345 , John Thompson 1403 , and John A . Thompson 1403 ; also for four candidates for initiation , viz ., Messrs . Arthur Barlow , John Wilson , James Toft , and Adam Still . Of these Messrs . Barlow

and Still made their entry into Freemasonry , thc ceremony being performed by the W . M ., who was assisted by Bros . Charlton and Pltmipton , these Brethren presenting and explaining the Working Tools , and delivering tho Antient Charge respectively . The other candidates will go through the ceremony upon a future occasion . At the festive board Loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured .

That of the joining Brethren was proposed by the J . W ., and that of the candidates by the VV . M ., responses being duly tendered . Bro . Arnold , in an extremely felicitous speech , proposed tho health of fche VV . M ., who said , in response , that he thanked the Brethren for the enthusiastic manner in which they had accepted Bro . Arnold ' s kind eulogy

of him . He was the first Master , and his listeners might rely upon the fact that he would throw all his energies into his work and make the Lodge worthy of its name . He reverted to the tenets of the Institution , saying that any man who acted up to them was one to be trusted . In conclusion he said thafc it would be his constant desire to make the Lodge successful , and hand down its traditions untarnished .

Other toasts followed , these being interspersed by songs , & c , rendered by Bros . Arnold , Bladon , Easton , Jefferies , Plumpton , Roberts , A . B . Smith , and Still .

NEW CONCORD LODGE , No . 813 . THE first meeting of this Lodge of Instruction at its new quarters , the Farleigh Hotel , Amhurst Road , Stoke Newington , was held on Wednesday , and attracted a large attendance , under the presidency of Bro . I . P . Cohen Preceptor of the Percy Lodge of Instruction , who acted as VV . M ., and rehearsed the 1 st and 3 rd ceremonies .

Bro . Gush was elected Preceptor in succession to Bro . Powell , who resigned , while Bro . Cordell P . M . was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . Heslop P . M . Secretary . Several new members were elected , the meeting giving every promise of a successful future .

UPTON LODGE , No . 1227 . AT the Great Eastern Hotel , on Monday , Bro . Jeffery W . M ., G . A . Peters S . W ., Rowberry J . W ., Schmidt P . M . Preceptor , Carroll Assistant Sec , Free P . M . Treasurer , Angold S . D ., My les J . D ., Simpson I . G ., Hyde Organist , also Bros . Butcher , Gottlieb , Levy , aud VV . II . Toye P . M .

The ceremony of initiation was rehearsed , Bro . Butcher candidate . Bro . Levy offering himself as candidate for raising , was entrusted and the third ceremony was rehearsed , the VV . M . giving the Traditional History . Bro . Peters S . W . was elected as VV . M . for the ensuing week , and Bros . Carroll and Rowberry as Auditors of the accounts of the past year .

It was proposed by Bro . Jeffery , and seconded by Bro . Free , that a vote of condolence be sent to the family of the late Preceptor Bro . Richardson , a suggestion that was unanimously carried . Lodge was then closed .

DUKE OF CONNAUGHT LODGE , No . 1524 . AT the Lord Napier , West Side , London Fields , Hackney , on Saturday , 26 th ult ., there was a large attendance , including Brothers C . Bestow W . M ., G . Kebbell S . W ., A . Rusby J . W ., Swift S . D ., F . Kebbell J . D ., J . B .

Frost I . G ., R . E . Fairclough Preceptor , G . Edwards Assistant Preceptor , J . Clark Sec , Felfcbensal Organist , and Brothers Siegcnberg P . M ., Cafcon P . M ., Prico , Small , Crisp , Smith , E . Johnson , Islip , Friedlander , J . Hands , Sexton , Worthington , Ives , Smith , and others .

The ceremonies of initiation and passing were rehearsed , the VV . M . giving the Antient Charge most impressively . _ Bro . A . Rusby presented the Lodge with new Collars and Aprons , a gift which was gratefully accepted by the Brefchron , who unanimously voted him Honorary membership of the Lodge , in recognition of his kindness .

This Lodge , noted for its Musical , Ceremonial , and Sectional Working , is a most successful one .

Dunstan presiding , when the Secretary announced that thero were sixtyseven members , all of whom were eligible to participate in the ballot for two Life Subscriberships . Bros . R . Emery and John Mason P . M . were the successful members .

Preceptor , and if the number of Masters and Past Masters who were present is any guarantee , then its success is already assured . This fact we are pleased-to note , as tho new venture is calculated to become a very important factor , not only in the well-ruling , but also in the future government of Lodges where Officers arc not too indifferent to take advantage of its formation bv enrolling themselves as members .

We trust that we are betraying no confidences when we venture to assert that tbe important project was evolved from tho active brain of the Preceptor , who deserves every support which it is possible to obtain . MANCHESTER CHAPTER , No . 179 . AT an ordinary Convocation of this Chapter , held at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet Street , E . G ., on the 24 th ult ., the installation of the Companions elected to tho chairs of 2 nd and 3 rd Principals took place . Comp E . C . Mulvey P . Z . presided , in the unavoidable absence of Comp . J . VV . Cain M . E . Z ., and was assisted by Comps . John Hattersley P . Z . 177 and G . G . Hill P . Z . as H . and J . respectively .

The Chapter having been formally opened , the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed . Comp . Charles Salter was then admitted and regularly installed as H ., after which Comp . T . Simkins was obligated and installed as J . Both ceremonies were ably performed by Comp . Mulvey ,

The acting M . E . Z . announced that since their last meeting a deep affliction hud fallen on tho Chapter by the death of Comp . Lovett P . Z . one of the Founders , and their M . E . Z . Comp . Cain had also to lament the decease of his wife . Votes of condolence and sympathy were directed to be sent to their respective families .

A candidate was proposed for exaltation at the next meeting , and there being no other business the Chapter was closed , and the Companions adjourned to dinner .

J . Voisey P . Z . S . E ., J . J . White S . N ., W . Briant P . Soj ., Day A . S ., Latham A . S ., Reynolds Treasurer . The Auditors woro elected .

On the motion of Comp . Robert J . Voisey P . Z . S . E ., seconded by Comp . Major Vincent P . Z ., it was unanimously resolved that a Past First Principal ' s collar and jewel be presented to the M . E . Z . Comp . Gill for his valuable services to the Chapter during the past year . Apologies for absence included those from Comps . Reynolds Treaaurer , Pereival Nairne P . G . Swd . B . Eng ., VV . J . Wrattcn , and others .

It was unanimously resolved that a letter of sympathy be sent to Comp . Nairne , to also express the pleasure of the members at the happy result of a recent painful operation .

Other business having been transacted , the Convocation was closed . Tho Companions afterwards assembled around the festive beard , and the usual Loyal and Arch toasts were honoured , a very successful and happy meeting being held .

Terry ' s Theatre . —Owing to the great demand for seats at the Wednesday aud Saturday Matinees , to witness " The Strange Adventures of . ' Miss Brown , " an extra Matinee will be given on Thursday , 7 th November .

G ., on the 24 th ult ., the installation of the Companions elected to tho chairs of 2 nd and 3 rd Principals took place . Comp E . C . Mulvey P . Z . presided , in the unavoidable absence of Comp . J . VV . Cain M . E . Z ., and was assisted by Comps . John Hattersley P . Z . 177 and G . G . Hill P . Z . as H . and J . respectively .

The Chapter having been formally opened , the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed . Comp . Charles Salter was then admitted and regularly installed as H ., after which Comp . T . Simkins was obligated and installed as J . Both ceremonies were ably performed by Comp . Mulvey ,

The acting M . E . Z . announced that since their last meeting a deep affliction hud fallen on tho Chapter by the death of Comp . Lovett P . Z . one of the Founders , and their M . E . Z . Comp . Cain had also to lament the decease of his wife . Votes of condolence and sympathy were directed to be sent to their respective families .

A candidate was proposed for exaltation at the next meeting , and there being no other business the Chapter was closed , and the Companions adjourned to dinner .

SINCERITY CHAPTER , No . 189 . AT a meeting afc Sfconehouse Town Hall , on the 28 fch ulfc , Comp . G * Dunsterville was elected Z . for fche ensuing year , with Comps . J . Parker and F . E . Sach as H . and J . respectively .

SPHINX CHAPTER , No . 1329 . AT a Convocation hold at the Surrey Masonic Hall , Camberwell , on Saturday last , there was a large attendance , including Comps . George Gill M . E . Z ., Gustavus Benedetti P . Z . H ., Thomas Roe J ., Robert J . Voisey

P . Z . S . E ., Dr . Webb S . N ., John J . White P . S ., W . Briant A . S ., Vincent T . Murche P . Z ., R . B . Bryant P . Z ., Major Vincent P . P . G . Swd . B . Middlesex , James Hill P . S . 2315 , Bowers , and others . The minutes of the last regular Convocation were read and confirmed . The ballot was taken for , and proved unanimously in favour of , Bro .

VV . A . Leaning 1963 , who was impressively exalted . The election for Principals and Officers took place , and included Comps . Gustavus Benedetfci as M . E . Z ., T . Roe H ., Dr . Webb J ., R . J . Voisey P . Z . S . E ., J . J . White S . N ., W . Briant P . Soj ., Day A . S ., Latham A . S ., Reynolds Treasurer . The Auditors woro elected .

On the motion of Comp . Robert J . Voisey P . Z . S . E ., seconded by Comp . Major Vincent P . Z ., it was unanimously resolved that a Past First Principal ' s collar and jewel be presented to the M . E . Z . Comp . Gill for his valuable services to the Chapter during the past year . Apologies for absence included those from Comps . Reynolds Treaaurer , Pereival Nairne P . G . Swd . B . Eng ., VV . J . Wrattcn , and others .

It was unanimously resolved that a letter of sympathy be sent to Comp . Nairne , to also express the pleasure of the members at the happy result of a recent painful operation .

Other business having been transacted , the Convocation was closed . Tho Companions afterwards assembled around the festive beard , and the usual Loyal and Arch toasts were honoured , a very successful and happy meeting being held .

Terry ' s Theatre . —Owing to the great demand for seats at the Wednesday aud Saturday Matinees , to witness " The Strange Adventures of . ' Miss Brown , " an extra Matinee will be given on Thursday , 7 th November .
