The Drama.

and we may mention for special praise the Macduff of Mr . Swinbourno , and the Witches , well played by Mr . Mead , Mr . Archer and Mrs . Huntley . The appointments and scenery are good and appropriate , and the usual stage business , although a little too noisy , is done unusually well . The production of the play does credit to a management already famous in the theatrical history of the present day : we

can only regret that , from uncontrollable causes , the enterprise displayed is not likely to meet its just reward . We return to a failure of a very different kind . "Self" is just the kind of drama which deserves to fail , and Ave feel no compunction in hastening it to its doom . M . Savdon's works do not as a rule bear translation well : in the process of boiling down they lose their

flavour , of which " Self" had little to begin with . The story is a most unhealthy one : a man afflicted with an attendant demon is not a pleasant personage anywhere , nor is it attractive to see him portrayed on the stage . The principal actor in " Self" bears a burden of this kind . Arthur Carew , finding himself driven into all kinds of vicious courses and naughty actions by his familiar , conceives

the idea that , by marrying an innocent girl , Florence Talbot , he may rescue himself from his unwelcome companion . Out of pity , perhaps , she consents to marry him , but as the demon is , as might be expected , worse after marriage than before , she is finally reduced to tho expedient of burning the house down , with herself and her husband in it . Luckily for himself and mankind generally , he dies on the occasion ,

and on his death his attendant demon is pictured on tho wall , bearing his own image , and thus explaining tho title of the play . " Self " is only noticeable for the much improved acting of Miss Eose Coghlan , as Florence Talbot , which on several occasions saved the play from impending ruin . It would be unfair to condemn Mr . Allerton as a bad actor , merely from the chances afforded to him as Arthur Carew .

The Polytechnic effects , rendered necessary for the due appearance of the demon , would have upset any actor , as they proved too mnoh for the equanimity of a long forbearing audience . " Self" is followed by a burlesque on Auber ' s " Diamons de la Couronne , " written by Mr . Eeece . Well played by Mr . Atkins , Mr . Standing and Miss Brabant , well written and full of fun , the burlesque is sure to run .

The primary object of this Company is tho creation of a New Series of the BRITON MEDICAL and GENERAL LIFE ASSOCIATION upon a perfectly independent basis , and entirely free from any of the existing liabilities or engagements of tho parent Institution , which , though continuing on its present basis , will devote its more immediate attention to its existing contracts and the profitable investment of its funds . THE BRITON MEDICAL and GENERAL LIFE ASSOCIATION had on tho 31 st December last upwards of 26 , 000 existing policies , assuring the sum of

. C 7 , 3 tj 2 , 183 , producing an annual income of £ 222 , 355 . Its net assets amounted to £ 659 , 305 , exclusive of its large uncalled capital . It has been determined , on the highest actuarial advice , to continue this large business as an independent First Series , and to create a Second Series , in the form of a new Company , with a distinct capital for fresh policy-holders . The creation of a New Series is not a novel idea . It has been adopted by some of tho largest and most successful Assurance Companies , and in the present instance it cm be more effectually established by means of a new Company ,

which , having tho benefit of an existing organization of over 2 , 000 agencies in perfect working order , will commence operations with advantages never before enjoyed by any similar institution . The new Company will , under special agreement , undertake the collection of tho income of the old society at a fixed scale of commission , and will have tho privilege of working all its well-established branches , agencies , and other valuable connections . Tho value of these will bo best appreciated by the fact that the old association has transacted nearly , if not quite , the largest business

of any kindred institution of tho same age . In the ten years ended 31 st December 1873 , the new annual premiums amounted to an average of £ 21 , 698 per annum . Hence the prospects of the now Company are exceptionally encouraging , and offer inducements for the investment of capital seldom to bo met with . It wilt be able at once to command a large and lucrative business without incurring tho heavy outlay usually inseparable from the formation and development of similar institutions . The Directors have caused full estimates to be made as to every point of this

scheme , and have submitted tho details to four actuaries of the highest eminence , viz ., Mr . C . J . Bunyon , M . A ., Actuary of tho Norwich Union Life Insurance Society ; Mr . A . II . Bailey , F . I . A ., Actuary of the London Assurance Corporation ; Mr . Marcus N . Adler , M . A ., F . I . A ., Actuary of the Alliance Insurance Company ; and Mr . Arthur Pearson , F . I . A ., Actuary of the Metropolitan Life Assurance Society ( whose report , together with the special valuation of the Old Series Company , which has been independently checked by Dr . W . Fair , F . R . S ., of the General Register Ofilco , Somerset House , and

Mr . Geo . Humphreys , M . A ., of the Eaglo Insurance Company , may be had on application ) . Persons taking 100 shares or upwards may pay 10 s on appplication . and 10 s by two instalments of 6 s each , at intervals of three months ; and persons taking 500 shares or upwards may pay 6 s on application , and the balance by three instalments of 5 s each , at similar intervals . Share warrants payable to bearer will also be issued . A large portion of tho first issue of capital has already been taken up by tho Directors and their friends , and the remainder is now offeredin the first place

, to tho shareholders and policy-holders of the old Company , and next to tho public generally , to whom the Directors confidently recommend the investment as one of an unusually promising nature . Tho Memorandum and Articles of Association may be seen at the Registered Offices of the Company as above . Forms of Application for Shares may be obtained from any of the District Managers or Agents of tho Company , the Broker , or direct from the Comnanv ' s Chief Office , 429 Strand , or its City Branch , 21 Cornhill .
