DISAPPOINTED BRETHREN .

OCCASIONALLY AVC meet Avith brethren Avho do not hesitate to OAvn that they are disappointed in their experience of Masonry , It does not realize their expectations . They thought tho Institution to be something quite different from what it proves to be . They are disappointed that they have taken membership in a society so little in accord with their thoughts aud habits of life . One of the disappointed class became a Mason because he Avas impressed Avith the

idea that the Fraternity AVUS a sorb of free and easy club , AVIIOSC members devoted themselves to eating aud drinking , and having a good time generally . He is AVcaricd by the precise regulations of the Lodgo . Ho is disgusted Avith so much reiteration of tho truths and duties that aro bound up in the Masonic system , and by his actions and his words alike ho reveals the fact that ho is not satisfied with

Masonry . Ho goes eiscAvhcre for tho license and free companionship Avhich lie fails to find under the auspices of tho Craft . Another is disappointed because ho gets no direct returns for tho money he has invested in obtaining iho degrees and in payment of dues . A brother of this class says , " what has Masonry ever done for mc ? What benefit havo I received from all my outlay of time and money !'" Disappointment arises iu this case because of the non-realization of

the selfish purpose that , led to Masonic affiliation . The brother had 5 'o proper appreciation of the character of the society Avhich he entered , imd it is no cau ^ c of Avonder that he is disappointed at Avhat lie finds to be its purpose and Avork . Had the complainer been better informed ho AA-ouId never have sought admission . Had the brethren of the Lod ge to Avhich ho applied read his heart and understood his motives they would never have allowed him admission .

Disappointed Brethren.

Sometimes the disappointed brother is one Avho has been checked iu his ambitious schemes . Ho joined tho brotherhood that he might bo a leader and ruler . Ho covets high places , and aspires to tho honors and distinctions Avhich , Masonry confers upon the distinguished feAV . If ho is hold back from these places of rank and authority his d isappointment shows itself in criticisms and denunciations of his

brethren . Ho loses his interest in Masonry , and sometimes turns his hand against tho Institution Avhich onco ho professed to lovo aud respect . But thero aro other types of disappointed brethren ; some of thorn of worthier character than those already sketched . A man of pure thought becomes a Mason , and is instructed in tho reverence duo to

tho groat and sacred name of Deity . Tko lessons around tho Lodgo altar are deeply impressive to tho candidate , aud ho is delighted Avith tho moral elements that are presented in Masonic teachings . How great his disappointment if ho finds thafc those who givo these touch ! ngs aro profane swearers—thafc they are Avithont any real respect for God . and religion ! Ho is mado sad if it shall appear that tho theory of

Masonry is ono thing and tho practice quite another . It is a liko kind of disappointment that effects tho man Avho has connected himself Avith the Craft expecting to find brotherly love illustrated among Masons to an extraordinary degree ; but AVIIO is forced to acknoAvledge that there is no such largo expression of this virtue as ho had anticipated Avould bo tho case . felloAVship , that spirit of Avilling helpfulness , that manifestation of sympathy aud affection among brethren , which ho had supposed it Avas the peculiar office of Masonry to produce iu tho hearts of its followers . He is disappointed that thero is so much of hardness , bitterness and strife all tho timo coming to tho surface oven Avithin the linos of the great brotherhood itself . Alas ! that thero should bo

a reason for this Avorst kind of disappointment—a disappointment occasioned by the fact that Masonry only poorly realizes its grand ideals , and that its folloAA'ers aro so imperfectly effected by tho sublime principles that aro interwoven with the system ! Alas for perverse human nature Avhich so often fails to represent in actual performance tho truth that has receiA'ccl tho assent of tho lips ! Dunkley aud Hcelis AVOIO appointed as Audit Committee . Bro . White , a candidate for passing , IIOAV answered the usual questions , and Avas passed to the second degree . The S . In proposing the health of the Prov . G . M . Col . F . Burdett , the ' S . W . referred to the nourishing condition of tho Province under his rule , and remarked that the

Loyal Hanover had especial reasons for being grateful to the Prov . G . M ., as for services in the Province generally the W . M . Bro . Dubois had been appointed to the important position of Prov .
