PROVINCIAL GRAND LODGE OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE .
THE annual meeting -was held on Tuesday , 22 nd nlfc ., ab Stow-on-the-Wold , by command of the Eight Hon . Sir Michael Hicks-Beach , Bart ., the Grand Master of the Province . Notwithstanding the inconveniences of the railway service , the number present
was large ; and unusual interest attached to the proceedings from fcho fact that two of the permanent offices , those of Deputy Provincial Grand Master and Provincial Grand Secretary , had lately become vacant by resignation . The
lately deceased Brother Brook-Smith had resigned the Deputyship a few weeks before his death , upon his appointment to the Head Mastership of the Modern side of the College ; and Bro . E . Trinder , of Cirencester , had also intimated to the Provincial Grand Master that he could not
accept reappointment as Secretary . Since the reformation of Provincial Grand Lodge for Gloucestershire in 1856—formerly for a century it had formed part of the
] omt Province of Worcester , Gloucester , and Herefordthere has been but two Deputies , whose term of Office has been coincident with thafc of their Grand Masters . Brother
Now march , to whose personal exertions and influence the re-organisation of the Province was mainly due , had his services in this respect acknowledged by being appointed Deputy to the late Lord Sherborne ( then the Hon . * R .
Button ) on the acceptance by fche latter of the office of Prov . Grand Master in 1856 . Bro . Newmarch filled the post with eminent success until 1880 , when he followed hia chief into retirement ; and in the same year Bro . Sir Michael Hicks-Beach succeeded Lord Sherborne and
selected Bro . Brook-Smith , in compliance with the general feeling of the Province , as his Deputy . On Bro . Brook-Smith ' s retirement , Bro . Vassar-Smith was nominated as his successor . Bro . Vassar-Smith is W . M . of the Royal
Union Lodge , No . 210 , P . M . of 839 , and a Past Warden of the Province ; bufc it is pre-eminently as Prov . Charifcy Secretary that he has rendered service to the Craft in Gloucestershire . Bro . E . Trinder has filled the office of
Prov . Grand Secretary during the whole of the thirfcy-two years that have elapsed since 1856 . Bro . J . B . Winfcerbotham , who succeeded him , is a P . M . of the Foundation
Lodge , No . 82 . Provincial Grand Lodge has not been held afc Sfcow-on-the-Wold for about twenty years , and the Local Lodge , No . 951 , has exerted itself to atone for its shortcomings in railway communication by fche hospitality of its welcome . Lodge was held in the St . Edwards Hall , a
building well suited for the gathering , and fche large room used as the Lodge room was tastefully decorated with evergreens and flowers . The R . W . Prov . G . M ., the Right Hon . Sir Michael Hicks-Beach , Barfc ., M . P ., presided , and
before the regular business was proceeded with made a touching allusion to the death of the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , of whom , he said , he felt unable to speak as he should wish , from the feelings which overcame him .
He concluded by proposing a vote recording the loss the Province h _ id sustained , and of condolence of its members with Bro . Bro . Brook-Smith ' s family . The question of the form of perpetuating his memory was referred to a
committee , as was also a proposal made by the Dean of Gloucester , that certain gilding should be added to the reredos in Gloucester Cafcnedral , in accordance , the Dean
