Wellman and Millar , candidates for passing to the second degree , were examined and entrusted ; fchey then retired . Lodge was opened in the second degree , and Bros . Wellman and Millar were re-admitted and passed

by fche W . M . to tbe degree of Fellow Craffc ; both the ceremonies wera correctly performed . Bro . Tubbs , a candidate for raising to the third degree , proved his proficiency in the former degrees , and was entrusted . Lodge was opened in the third degree , and Bro . Tubbs on re-admission was raised to the 'sublime degree of M . M . The

ceremony was performed by the I . P . M ., Bro . Mount , in his usual correct and impressive manner ; the effect was considerably heightened by the instrumental and vocal accompaniment , under the able direction of Bro . Tirbntt Organist . The W . M . resumed the chair , and closed to the first degree , when , the business being ended , Lodge was closed , and adjourned till October next .

EWELL LODGE , No . 1851

THE installation meeting of this Lodge was held at the Sun Hotel , mm Kingston . on-Thames , on Saturday , 26 fch May , when a large gathering of visitors and members assembled . The Lodge being opened in due form , Mr . J . O'Connell was initiated into Ancient Free and Accepted Masonry in an impressive manner by Bro . W . H . Paddle W . M ., who was ably supported by his Officers . Bro . Paddle then installed his successor , Brother George Moss P . M . 1201 into the

chair of K . S ., the work being carried out perfectly . The W . M . then proceeded to invest his Officers , as follow : —Bros . Paddle I . P . M ., DunHey S . W ., Room J . W ., Baber P . P . G . After the installation , the W . M . presented

to Brother Paddle , in the name of the Lodge , a jewel set with bril-Hants , as a mark of esteem for the unwearying kindness and energy displayed by him during two successive years of office as W . M . An enjoyable dinner was afterwards served in the Hotel , by Bros . Bond aud Frayling , fche energetic hosts , and the evening was enlivened by some good vocal and instrumental music , to which the visitors

materially contributed . In responding to the toast of the health of the Provincial Grand Officers for Surrey , Bro . Chas . Greenwood P . G . S . B . Prov . G . S . W ., * testified to the pleasure he felt afc the prosperity of the Ewell Lodge , afc the consecration of which he had assisted , and referred to the members of the Lodge ( Bros . Taylor and Paddle ) who held Provincial Grand rank , as a proof of the discrimination of the

Prov . Grand Master in recognising merit in the various brethren under his jurisdiction ; this he ( Bro . Greenwood ) stated to be no easy matter for decision among so many good Masons in the Province . It was stated during the meeting that a warrant had been granted for a Chapter in connection with the Ewell Lodge , and thafc the same would shortly be consecrated . Among the visitors were Bros . New Concord Lodge of Instruction , No 813 . —The usual meeting of this successful Lodge was held on Wednesday lasfc , afc the Jolly Farmer's , Sonfchgate-road . The chair was occupied by Bro . Dixie , who was supported by Bros . Weeden S . W ., Jones J . W ., P . M . Cusworth Preceptor , Perl Secretary , Lone S . D ., Gadsby J . D ., Smith I . G ., Manger , Ockelford , Schuler , Allsopp , Laughton , Flack ,

Powell , Kilhck , Ashton , and others . The previous minutes having been read and confirmed , the W . M . proceeded to work the initiation ceremony , Bro . Powell acting as candidate . Bro . Flack having proved himself efficient to be passed , fche Ledge was opened in fche second degree , and ceremony of passing rehearsed , Bro . Flack acting as candidate . Lodge was closed in the second degree . The W . M . having risen for the necessary number of times , and Bro . Weeden having

been elected to occupy the position of W . M . at the ensuing meeting , Lodge was closed and adjourned until Wednesday , 6 th June , when Bro . P . M . Cusworth will wort the ceremony of installation . Brethren are cordially invited to attend , at eight p . m . precisely . After Lodge was closed , a little harmony was indulged in by the brethren , who afterwards separated , having spent an instructive and pleasant evening .

meeting ) , brought up their accounts for the past year , which show a small balance in the hands of the Treasurer . The books and accounts had been most carefully and accurately kept by the Secretary , Bro . Williams , while every voucher required by the Auditors had been produced by the Treasurer , Bro . Phillips . The Audit Committee con . sidered that the best thanks of the Lodge were due to those brethren

for their zeal and ability in conducting the financial business of the Lodge . Resolutions were unanimously carried , conveying the thanks of the Lodge , for their very efficient and valuable services since the formation of the Lodge , and re-electing them in their several offices for the ensuing year . Williams Secretary , having rendered essential service to the Lodge , first as Founders , and secondly as Treasurer and Secretary respectively , be and are hereby ( in ac cordance with Bye-law No . 13 ) elected Honorary Members of the

Lodge , with all privileges . " Further resolution < were passed thank , ing the Auditors for their services ; to the host , Bro . Monk , for pro . viding every necessary for the comfort of the Lodge , for the care of the Lodge furniture , and his help afc the musical portions of the meetings . On the motion of the W . M ., and seconded by Brother Williams Secretary , Bro . George Norrington , Royal Leopold Lodge .

No . 1669 , was unanimously elected a member . Hearty good wishes having been expressed , Lodge was closed in dne form , in peace and harmony , and adjourned . The brethren subsequently met for refreshment , when the usual Loyal and Masonio toasts were eloquently given from the chair , and enthusiastically received by the brethren . Bros . Johnstone , Monk , and Williams contributed to the excellent musical programme of the evening .

C . having having been formed , a ballot was taken for a nam . ber of candidates , and tho following , who were in attendance were accepted and received : Bros . C . D . H . Drury , M . D ., P . completed , the Celebrant called upon Fra . Moore , who delivered a most interesting address upon the old Templar Preceptory , of Temple Hirst , near Selby . Going into minute details as to the Order , and especially with reference to the condition of the Temple Hirst Preceptory at the time of its suppression . A vote of thanks was passed to Fra . Moore , and fche paper was ordered to be printed . Fra . Rev .

W . C . Lnkis made some interesting remarks respecting an ancient Templar seal lately found near Temple Hirst , and in the possession of Bro . T . W . Tew D . P . G . M . Wesfc Yorkshire ; and he acceded to the request of the meeting that his remarks should be embodied in the publication of Fra . Moore ' s paper . The report of the Bye-laws' Committee was read and adopted . It was arranged that , if possible , the

next meeting should be held at Rievaulfc Abbey , on the Saturday in the third week in August . Several proposals of candidates were made , and the M . C . was dissolved . The fratres subsequently met afc tea , under the presidency of the Celebrant , aud a very pleasant evening was spent in the discussion of various subjects connected with Masonry in its varied branches .

A Year Of Lifeboat Work.

A YEAR OF LIFEBOAT WORK .

EVERY year brings a fresh list of terrible shipwrecks and disastrous collisions , resulting too frequently in a fearful loss of life ; but , while deploring that such is the case , we can turn with satisfaction to the splendid and successful efforts made for rescuing fche shipwrecked sailor from a watery grave on our dangerous shores . First and foremost in this noble work is fche Royal National Lifeboat Institution , which last year saved , by means of its boats , no less than

884 poor fellows , who otherwise would most probably have perished . In addition to this the Board of Trade ancl the Coastguard have , by fche use of fche rocket apparatus , rescued a number of lives . It is remarked in the Report of the Institution jnst published , that it mighfc have been hoped that increased skill in navigation , the substitution of steam colliers for the sailing craft of former yearsand increased

, sobriety among our merchant seamen , would have greatly diminished the number of wrecks and of lives lost , at least on onr own coasts . Bufc , whilst those changes may have occasioned some diminution , the increase of collisions on oar crowded sea thoroughfares and other causes , have made up the average amount , and the courage and

capacity of our Lifeboat men have been | called into requisition as often , if not more frequently , than in previous years . During the past year , afc the suggestion of the Chairman , Edward Birkbeck , Esq ., M . P ., tho Committee made an exception to their general rule to confine their attention exclusively to the work of the Institution , hoping fco diminish fcho loss of life amongst that W *
