CHESHIRE CHARITY .

A MEETING of the Committee of Benevolence of the Province of Cheshire was held at Crewe on Wednes-

day , 30 th ult ., Col . C . S . Dear presiding , when various petitions were dealt with . The case of Nathaniel Gee was recommended for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . Bro . McLeod , from the Boys School , London , attended and gave some particulars as to the forthcoming Centenary of the

Institution , at which His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales will preside . Accommodation would be provided , he said , for about 2 , 500 Stewards at the Albert Hall . He hoped that the Province of Cheshire would be well represented , and

that the success of the Festival would be an era in Masonic charity . Bro . Stevenson gave some interesting information of the work of the Cheshire Educational Masonic Institution among the sons and daughters of Masons .

New Zealand's Recognition.

NEW ZEALAND'S RECOGNITION .

r IP HE recognition of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand by JL Scotland in now within measurable distance , and only requires the adjusting of certain details , says " The Mallet , " in " Glasgow Evening News . " The Lodges in New Zealand are presently divided into five Districts , and it is required

that the New Grand Lodge will agree not to issue Charters for the erection of any new Lodge outside these districts . It is also a condition that all Brethren who shall continue members of Lodges remaining under the parent Constitution shall be fully recognised by the Grand Lodge of New Zealand .

The enthusiasm of individual Brethren in connection with the Centenary celebration of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys was exemplified at the regular meeting of Urmston Lodge , No . 1730 , when Bro . Slyman intimated that whatever sum the Lodge gave , collectively , up to £ 100 ,

he would double . We are told this statement was received with cheers , and despite the fact that we are averse to applause in Freemasonry we cannot refrain from joining in with a hearty Bravo ! for Brother Slyman . May he have many imitators in his good deeds !

"A Sprig Of Acacia."

"A SPRIG OF ACACIA . "

IT is with profound regret we record the demise of Brother Martin Thomas P . M . P . P . G . D . East Lancashire , which took place at his residence , Ducie Grove , Manchester , on Wednesday , oth ult . The news of his death did not come as a surprise , for Bro . Thomas had been ailing for some

considerable length of time , and only a year or two back was compelled to take a prolonged tour abroad for recuperative purposes . He had been an active worker in Manchester Masonic circles , and had twice occupied the chair of K . S ., once in the Caledonian Lodge , No . 204 , and also in the

Minnehaha Minstrel Lodge , No . 2363 , as first Master , 1890-1 . As one of the Founders of the latter Lodge it was mainly owing to his zeal that the musical services there have become so popular . For several years he had held the position of Secretary , which he relinquished only a short time ago , and

was appointed Charity Representative , holding that post at the time of his death . He had not aspired to the higher degrees of Masonry , contenting himself with the Royal Arch , and had passed the principal chairs of the Caledonian Chapter . He was interred at the Manchester Southern Cemetery , on

Monday , 14 th March , over 30 Brethren and friends attending at the graveside by way of showing a last mark of respect to one who had laboured hard in the cause of Freemasonry . Several beautiful wreaths had been sent , notably from the Lodges with which he was connected . The Minnehaha

Minstrel Lodge was represented by Past Masters beth Wrigley P . P . G . D ., F . W . Wollaston P . P . G . A . D . C , C . H . Beever , Hy . Nail P . P . G . Tr ., Fred Hilton P . P . G . D . C , Thos . Black ; Bros . Sam Luke J . W ., Jos . Hilton Treas ., S . H . Stubbs S . D ., F . Todd J . D ., J . Harrop , and E . Parnell .

IT is with regret we have to record the death of a highly respected tradesman of Burslem—Bro . Richard Benbow —which took place under painfully sudden circumstances early on Sunday , 20 th ult . A few weeks ago Bro . Benbow suffered from a sharp attack of bronchitis , but he seemed to

recover from this completely , and he was in his usual good spirits until Saturday evening . After tea , however , he experienced great difficulty in breathing , and went to bed , and rapidly became worse , expiring shortly after midnight .

His decease has caused much sorrow among his brother tradesmen , who held him in high esteem . He was a prominent and one of the oldest members of the Sutherland Lodge .
